Emmy, you might just be the bravest woman on KZbin. Not only do you eat strange foods on occasion, but you are not afraid of bees. I think you are my hero. 🤩
@JaimeNacole5 жыл бұрын
Emmy just a suggestion - it would help if you explain some of your terminology for non-beekeeper viewers. This would make a great educational experience. I find myself pausing your video a lot just to go down a rabbit hole of google searches to understand what the heck you're talking about. Example: Supersedure.
@DreamyDuskywing5 жыл бұрын
She has explained about supersedure cells in previous videos, and about the swarm cells. It's probably a lot to think about when you're trying to corral queen bees and stop them from swarming 😂

Its was definitely better to let the new queens emerge. For many reasons. She would start a strain of genetics more localized bees for your area which improves survival. Also you would have a free new queen that will give you another 2 or 3 years to carry on your apiary. I would say most of the time when you buy a queen and introduce her, the hive will reject her and make another one.I know you want to keep your bee yard small, but you should be making 2 or 3 splits every year to get new localized queens this way you won't be needing queens when the old ones are no longer viable. May is the BEST time to do this. It is the natural time for your bees. The other thing is during that break when the new queen is growing, hatching, mating etc, the hive gets a brood break which is a natural way to control Varroa Mites. No Brood-No mite production. Also the bees continue to work very hard and bring in loads of Pollen and Nectar. My most productive hives in the Spring are those waiting for their new queen. Then when that new queen is ready to lay, she fills that hive up with wall to wall brood. It can take a week sometimes before a mated queen will start laying. So the whole process can take a month. The Blue queen hive might want to make a new Queen (swarm) because they are ready for a new generation and the Blue queen is getting old. Its not the Queen that wants to swarm, it's the collective of the colony that makes the decisions. Why are you marking different colors? They should go according to the year they are born.

Thanks so much for your words of wisdom - in a lot of ways this is still new to me!

I was also wondering why you were using different colors. I am a first year and I thought everyone went with that years color. Maybe you just want to tell the hives apart?

Some colonies do create cups, your blue queen does not look like it’s going to swarm. Having charged cells is when you would get a swarm but you did not find any charged cells.
@floofybunnyz5 жыл бұрын
Maybe you should give more foundation to the grant queen? That would help her not want to swarm because she'd have more room to lay.

Emmy, will your hives ever get back to the point where they remember they don't mind you and you don't need protective gear anymore, or are they going to stay so grumpy from now on?
