I love watching videos about other peoples hobbies. Got randomly recommended a few bee keeping videos by youtube out of nowhere. As honey enjoyer I found such videos quite enjoyable and informative to watch. Myself I do coding for a living, learning guitar as one of my hobbies, trying to do live streams and videos as another hobby.

Hey David, I’ve been helping an old bee keeper for years and took over his business this past year when he retired. I’m currently running around 400 colonies. I happened across your video and I can’t say how important it is to rotate old comb. Thank you for making this video and helping others learn.

I love your stories. My wife and I met in high school in Illinois in 1975. She was 13 and I was 16. We got married in 1979 and we are still happily married today with six children and eight grandchildren. I started beekeeping as a teen in the 70's but paused for many years. My wife talked me into getting going again a few years ago. Thanks for all you do.

We moved west when we married and now our whole family lives on the left coast with most of us around the West Puget Sound. 😃 Beekeeping in the PNW is tricky. We have a lot of forests which does not have a lot of forage for the bees but clearcuts and roadsides do.

David i love your life lesson chats , so many young people could benefit from just listening to your coffee time whether they are beeks or not . i retired at 59 to be a carer along with my wife for an elderly family member on a rural property and after the first year found my self going stale and not doing well on a mental health level ,so when a friend asked me to save a neglected hive i jumped at the chance to restart my beek journey in a new state . short story is the bees found me and saved me from myself ! thank you for your work and im sure many people like me get more out of it than just bee related info . Happy new year to you and your family

My sisters Birthday is also the 20th of January and will be 70. I’m a beekeeper and just turned 74 and love informing people about bees and they are amazed . This gives me meaning to spread awareness of bees. This spring I’ll be taking on a father and daughter to start beekeeping. My issue is hard of hearing.

Hi David thank you so much. We have s few things in common. We are same age and my daughters birthday is the 20th also 😊🎉Your videos show lots of details and help me alot! I just wrapped my hives in insulation and covered the boxes with plastic shower curtains. I left the front entance open and reduced. i block the wind with some hive lids in front. Im feeding 1 to 1 sugar syrup in a quart mason jar tucked between side frames because I dont have pollen patties on hand. Im hoping my bees will be warm enough through the upcoming winter months. I What do you think?

Hi David! I've been preparing for the spring but there is only so much I can do right now. I love dogs and have 4 small ones of my own. Over the past few days sitting in my girl cave which is an unoccupied apartment in my home and I decided to volunteer with a dog rescue group. I will be fostering and training puppies to prepare them for adoption. My first foster comes to me on 1/2/25. At my age I should have grandkids but it's not in the cards so I will play with puppies instead!!!

The expence of bee keeping can be mitigated by building or repairing equipment yourself. I built a solar wax melter, a bee vac, several hive stands, etc. For boxes i got old boxes from a large bee keeper for free and repaired them. I got 49 boxes that way. I've also built some myself. I do buy unassembled frames and plastic foundation. I build my own bottom boards, inner cover, lids mostly from scrap lumber. Long story short is you can do a lot of this yourself and for me thats half the fun of it.

Can I consider helping or teaching others . 6 year beekeeper and have now got my Advanced Master's certificate but killed me that my bad is failing

Well Debbie, Sorry to hear about your challenges reducing your enjoyment of beekeeping. Hopefully, you can still be a great teacher and mentor. When I get where I can't work heavy boxes, I'm going to still make videos but have an assistant doing the heavy lifting. Maybe I should start interviewing people now 😀

Propolis is pretty valuable but a real PITA to harvest.
@thomasrape4616
@thomasrape4616 Ай бұрын
There is a market for the propolis and the wax. I dont sell either one but there is a market. I need the wax for waxing foundations. Its not worth it to me to collect propolis, not worth the trouble. For wax a solar wax melter is the best thing I ever built. Set your melting tray to a slight angle so the wax runs off into a catch container but not too much so most of the solids are left behind on the tray. The wax i get from mine is ready to rewax foundation with no further processing. I built my melter on the larger side because of the piece of glass that i had on hand but i can melt a 5 gallon bucket of old comb in one shot. After sundown you can take out the container of wax then scrape and dump the solids. If you have more just reload it and forget it until the next evening
