Getting Private Jiu Jitsu Lessons as a White Belt

Stumbled into a class where I ended up 1:1 with my professor and had a free private lesson. No stripe white belt. Amazing experience and couldn’t say enough good things about how it helped my development and confidence in so many areas I’ve had little questions about.

Very smart to learn the Z guard early on. Not many white belts will know how to defend it and it will give you the upper hand for quite some time.

Yeah man could not agree more - I had a blue belt at my gym who was very good at Z guard and would just smash me with it as I was so clueless - Jeremy is a big fan

Definitely agree with doing privates early on. Great foundation that'll accelerate your game. I also agree teaching it to someone really helps reinforce what you learn. Teaching lessons has made me think about and break down things I've been doing already. Having to explain the details that make a move work makes you a lot better.

That's a really good point Alec! My coach was talking to me about this very thing a couple of days ago and he was saying that there is a big difference between being able to DO jiu jitsu and UNDERSTANDING it enough to be a really good teacher and you've hit the nail on the head there, having to explain the details that makes something work means that you really understand it. One day I might get to that level hahaha
