I get privates almost everyday monday to thursday. We have blackbelts that come regularly and since a lot of students come in most twice a week me who goes everyday get extra help. It improves your game

Really enjoy your vids. I've been taking GJJ Combatives for about 6 months (had prior Judo, and grew up wrestling). I just started privates and think *most* folks need to focus on the basics taught in class, so that when they DO start taking privates, they get the most out of it. The exceptions being folks who for whatever reason, can't fit regular fundamental classes into their schedule, or have some expedited need to ramp up training--which is completely legit as well.

Expensive for students, but not scalable for instructors - so while good money, limited by their available hours, mat space, teaching commitments, etc.

As others have mentioned, I would definitely like to take privates, but juijitsu is not inexpensive... I couldn’t afford the additional cost. I work extra now just so that I can pay for my gym’s membership

Gjj was originally taught via private lessons. In fact, Helio designed his teaching method around private lessons and taught via private lesson most of his teaching career.

Yeah because he just care about money for this reason also helio train only peopld who can afford a gi. Also he believed just they should teach basic self defence in others and keep all advance techniques for them.Guess who change this... carlson gracie he changed the teaching methods. He adopted group classes lesons a give the change to poors people to train in jj if they clean the matts or remain loyal to him,that is something a real sensei do

I agree, I take many privates as I can. I get a lot out of group classes and conditioning but you just can’t beat a one on one private setting to learn in.

Agree in the early stages they do help to not get the bad habits that form in most people. I think you can get just as much( purple and up) if you have a great training partner and very open minded as Pedro says we must be scientist and explore.

+Jaime Willard that’s debatable. So being an upper belt, you’d pass up opportunities for training 1-on-1 with Master Pedro? Doing so wouldn’t make you better faster?

Me yes and it gets back to $$$, but I do make every seminar I can if he's close. Yes you can gain a ton of knowledge one on one, but I think a lot of the journey is us exploring especially after purple. Seeing what works best for my body and making it work with as little effort as possible. My jits is different than most people cause I always try to start from a bad place then move to better place and not just try to win. It has made a massive leap in my overall level. I'm also lucky I attend class 4 days a week 2-3 classes a day and at 44 yr old I have to train smart. Keep up the great vids.

Hmmm, private classes?. Well, I quit jiu jitsu as a purple belt in year 2000 and my instructor wants me to start again wearing the same belt I left off. Many privates coming my way as I'm fresh meat for the blue belts.

Yes - Private’s are the way to go. I was in a different art before but I still know some of the stuff I study. And I will do private’s also to increase my knowledge of BJJ

Another great video!! Makes complete sense. Like anything in the learning process, Instructor to student ratio is key. I think it would be REALLY important if someone is training in an area where there aren't a lot of qualified instructors or even experienced BJJ practitioners training. No matter how good a teacher is or how dedicated students are, its nigh on impossible for an Instructor to correct every movement made by 20 students when they are allotted 5-10 minutes to drill a move that has 4 or 5 steps in it. I know I ask a lot of questions but here's one more if you don't mind :). How do most academies handle the scheduling of private lessons? Do they set aside time slots and a space for them? For instance have a room with mat and an instructor set aside from 6-8 PM weeknights for those who want privates? Or is the time and location worked out with the student?

i really don't know how most academies handle their private lessons. being that doing them takes more of a physical toll on my body, i don't typically do a lot of them (typically between 15-20/month) myself. for mine, i have students that have regular times i train them, and i keep open some time slots for those who want an occasional lesson, or those who come in from out of town and want to set up a session or two. i usually conduct my private lessons at my home studio.

Hi Ryan, I'd like to hear about the format of your private lessons if possible. Do you drill with your privates, if so for how long? How do you conduct the session? I was taking regular privates but it seemed like information overload and we did very little drilling, I felt this didn't work that well for me. Just curious how you go about things. Keep the videos coming, really enjoying them.

thank you for the feedback on the videos. we really appreciate it! we typically do them one of three ways. if they are regular private students, i would first ask them if they have any nagging questions they'd like answered, then i go and teach them what i feel they need to know, based on their progression through the KJJ curriculum. if they are occasional private students, we can ask them what they'd like to cover, and then cover it. the last option is typically for students who are not regular students, where we'll train with them for about the first 5 minutes and feel where their time in the lesson will be best spent, and will teach them to "fill their holes" in their game.

Rey Alecio cross Side is also known as side control. Side mount is also known as technical mount. Hope that helps!

Agree, but do you think that for total beginners it is worth it? Or should white belts first get a couple of training months in before privates really give the best return on investment?

+C., it is definitely important for any beginner to engage in private sessions if it's within their means! After all, when bad habits form, it's often really difficult to undo them. If I can prevent bad habits from ever forming, The learning process is much quicker, more precise, and much more effective, making the overall experience much more enjoyable!

@Hudson Hawk6 It is interesting the various philosophies on when sparring should be introduced (saying this b/c if you go private for a year, you aren't really sparring in a group setting). I know Professor Renner doesn't do sparring for white belts for first 6 months, or something like that, but I found and sense that sparring from the beginning with excellent sparring partners from a very good professor who keeps the "crap" out of his dojo will propel a white belt much more than avoiding sparring. I'm with Gracie Barra and Professor is top notch as I can tell from his students since they will manifest his style. I formerly was with a BJJ dojo that was much looser in training style and if you didn't want to be there as a individual, you wouldn't last (I mean you didn't get the sense you with a group of like minded folks; you had the sense you were entering the comp ring every training session and you know that is an individual effort and the competitor isn't going to help you get better and encourage you when things are hard).

Definitely. However, what I found is that the beginner curriculum is not something you can learn once and never go back to. Once people are in an “advanced” level, they tend not to go back to brush up on the fundamental concepts that are the most important. In that way, next classes are better. But in my humble opinion, privates are best for beginners over group classes.

@@KamaJiuJitsu Agreed on the concept of "advanced" labeled classes. As you have said in a prior video, if a student is excellent at fundamentals, which are 90-100% deployable, his BJJ will likely be above those with 50% fundamentals and 50% advanced skills but advanced skills only deployable 10-50% of the time. I have no concern over skipping the advanced classes vs fundamentals. What I call the "skills sparring" which is when you start from a position, then attempt to escape or whatever, is highly efficient for employing taught techniques because you focus vs being told to just "spar" and hoping you get a chance to employ what you just learned. I take 2 privates a week and its 40 each from a black belt but some people I read charge 500 an hour lol. That Is utterly insane. My lessons are one for BJJ and one for Wrestling. I can afford 80 bucks a week but not 500 to 1000 lol

In New York some charge $100 for brown and $ 200 and some 250 & $500 all depends on the school and who you learn from.

@@KamaJiuJitsu Value comes from scarcity. A good instructor's time is limited and in high demand, and that is worth paying for. If you get lucky and find an instructor who doesn't care about charging what he's worth, then that's a bonus.
