I love the man van. I had Toyota tercel sedan that was my work truck. Hauling wrench's, chainsaws, gas and oil. Plus it had roof racks for hauling lumber, roofing, beds, even a rocking chair. Thanks for the calving check list.

Some day you will get a truck. My daily driver is a tandem 40 ton self loading flat deck/log truck. A little over kill when I am just going to the dentist, but otherwise super handy for hay hauling and feeding.@@morethanfarmers

We burn in the spring nice and dry & kills the bugs & eggs - and use a 5 gallon propane tank with a Real weed burner torch and long hose. Didn’t mean to Steer you wrong. Such a pretty baby🥰

Time to share another idea. Invest a little in the right tools and a job becomes e-z. Neither a chainsaw or a hedger would satisfy me to cut down that asparagus, what I would use is a pruning blade (amazon sells them) on a reciprocating saw (sawZall). If you ever try it you will know why I suggested it and why I refuse to work jobs that don't let me implement new ideas.

For cutting down aparagus, there is thing called a mulching blade that goes on the string trimmer. its about 20 euros and does that job in minutes. It mulches pretty much everything including branches up to 3 cm.

You have potatoes sprouting and I have a window full of onions sprouting. I finally cleaned, chopped and froze the last of my onions. I got the last of the cabbage and beets out of the garden and still have some carrots that get covered over nights under 35. I think your little surprise is really cute. You guys are doing a great job! Im like you I want everything done before winter really sets in . I do have onions and garlic that are in some if my raised beds for the winter, and I have my mainstay herbs that always grow. I have some new elderberry trees that are planted and I have to watch that deer dont get them. But im like you both I want to rest in the winter because spring and harvest time are real busy and no rest time. I put straw also over all my raised beds, but I didn't cover my strawberries, I guess I will now a bit like you! Good luck and congrats on the new baby!!! So sweet!❤

Small potatoes are perfect for a microwave without peeling. 9 minutes for 2 servings. Just add butter or olive oil and salt. Or add some cheese, if the cows are free-range, cruelty free, and do not get killed for meat.

as a more bang for your buck try to get a 3/4 ton truck like a 2500 chevy or dodge, or an f250, a half ton can do a lot but sometimes they just arent as capable for certain jobs like hauling hay. dont get a diesel gas is fine, but just the extra payload capabillity is a game changer for hauling grain or materials

What I do with asparagus overgrowth (and dead overgrowth and chop & drop in general) is use the weed whacker to cut it off close to the soil while standing upright. Heh. Then I drag my little chipper/shredder (cheap, low capacity but good enough for that kinda stuff) over and turn it all into fine, ruffled-up chips. (I'm a big fan of boy toys :) Then I simply spread is as mulch usually. Or you can rake it up and dump it on the compost pile for a quick compost turnaround. (fast & FUN!) My $.o2. :) I love yous guyses and yur videos!!!

That's a good start! Homesteading is all about learning to work with what you have. You can do a LOT on one acre! Rabbits are worth looking into for another source of meat on a small homestead, as are quail. Good luck!

We try to help people as much as possible with our videos, so that often means we need to talk about the hard things or things we're struggling with. I'd be using a brushcutter, not a chainsaw, for the asparagus. A brushcutter's metal blade fitting will slice through those stems in a blink, and you operate it standing up, which is better for your back. Also, when you're talking about a circular saw mounted on the end of a stick, having the other end of that stick strapped to your chest is actually a pretty safe place to be. Using a chainsaw at an awkward angle is not safe at all!

Yup, I'm going through the same thing with my potatoes. My Ukons golds and my blue potatoes are good also. The reds are the only ones. I eat those little red precious gems right away. They are so delicious just boiled and smashed and butter. Nothing better than the baby reds. Yum!!! Should do a video on the making of your feeder rack with IBC tote. Lastly, I love how you guys are so prepared in the "what if" situations re: cow birthing. That speaks volumes about your great animal husbandry.

When i saw her udder in your last video i said, "you do *not* have 2 weeks before she freshens" 😅 yay! My understanding was that if potatoes sprout you just put up with it because breaking off sprouts lets bacteria in? So i try to prevent sprouting but if it happens i just roll with it and break them off as i use the potatoes.

I am in NE Ohio and the best thing I did for my asparagus patch was burn it in the spring, I had been cutting it down and letting it stay as a mulch but the bugs got worse each year. So last season I burned all the dead fonds that had been cut down, it also cleared out all the weeds for the summer (bonus) and really cut down on the bugs, I hand picked what was left and saw less and less each day. I have left it standing and am waiting for either late winter or early spring and will burn it without cutting it down, should be a sight! Congratulations on your new addition, very exciting.

We've burned asparagus in the late winter. It works well. This year, we took a weed wacker to the patch (3'x60') and are spreading compost and several inches of shredded leaves on top. We shred the tops and use as a mulch elsewhere. We live in zone 4 and have never had a problem with die back from -25F winters. Can't wait to watch the adventures of the new calf. 🙂

Thanks for the content! Question, what kind of perimeter fence do you have for your dairy and beef cow? Do you have a 12guage wire vs cattle mesh around the perimeter? Or do you contain them with just polybraid?

It is 3 strands of electric wire fencing. Wire is cheaper than polybraid, and more durable in my opinion. 3 strands with a good energizer works great!
