What did you do to the 80% of items? Sell/Donate?
@deirdremcmahon52115 жыл бұрын
I did this a couple of years ago after losing a lot of weight. I donated most things, as well as giving a few things to friends and family and selling a few formal dresses and shoes, bags etc that I loved at the time but just didn't use, either because my taste had changed or because they were stupid, one-off purchases for particular occasions. I kept one top in my old size that I love and will eventually turn into a cushion or something. The amount of stuff we hoard is disgusting - I do regular culls now, although increasingly I find I'm buying so little (and buying good quality items that I actually wear and enjoy) that I'm getting rid of less and less. It's a great feeling!

Ending with : 52 t-shirts 32 Pants 17 bags ? Are you sure you are done with the closet yet ? You may want to watch the rushes again, you'll notice some of the clothes fit you or look better on you than others. Giving oneself constraints is always a good idea like : synthetic clothes are not breathable and shed microplastics in the water which end up in the sea so keeping natural fabrics may help you get rid of a lot Some colours or shapes are great to compliment a part of you like or make another part more discreet...

I'd love to see a video elaborating on the mental side of this, meaning what made you buy so much stuff and what it has "given" you. I mean the physical act of decluttering isn't even the hardest part! The hardest thing is to stop the flow of stuff coming in after decluttering and resist consumerism. I'd highly recommend doing a no buy challenge. 😊 Stopping consuming even for just one month can be really eye opening. My biggest win from my no buy challenge in July was starting a "consideration list" to which I wrote down everything I wanted to buy during the challenge. Then I had time to think if I really needed that thing and how important it is. I noticed I have things mostly in 3 categories: things that I can't live without and need asap, things that are actual needs in the future but can very well wait, and things that are just for fun and basically needless. Some of those things I'll allow myself to buy, for example services or digital goods. Life needs some fun after all. But a new blouse just because I feel like it isn't something that passes my "consideration test". I'm doing another no buy in September!

I love Konmari and I also admire minimalists. I am doing Konmari because I had the chance to gather all my items in one house (I live in 2 houses) and counted all my clothes except for undergarments. I have 404 in total. I was already freaking out because of how much I have. I like fashion and dressing up, that's why it came to that amount. I have a lot of hand-me-downs and I also enjoy thrifting. If I want to give up on items, my mom used to stop me from doing so because she feels like it would be a waste. Explained to her what I read in Kondo's book and now she understands. I can't imagine going through much more than that number 🙈 But we all have to start somewhere! Especially because of quarantine where you mostly are just at home you do realize that you could comfortably do away with 70% of what you own. Now in the process of selling and will donate once quarantine is over.

The KonMari method of making a giant pile of the whole category is a real eye opener for a lot of folks. Terrifying when you are confronted with a literal mountain of stuff! You did a good job with halving your current supply. I would suggest another shelf or pretty boxes to help take some of the tower stacks and set them up like books on a shelf or like they are in the drawers. That way you don't have to balance a 10 inch pile of shirts to get the one 2/3rds the way down the stack. :-) Good luck with the continued purge!

Except I quite regularly declutter items, and even the ones I "regret" I end up forgetting about eventually. All this is more reason for me to try shop less. I'm probably in the minority on this, but the Konmari method of tucking bags inside of other bags seems counterproductive to me, because you can't see the ones inside when dressing and it makes it harder to find or remember to use the smaller ones. I'm down to 17 bags & hang most of them off a multi-hook hanger on the door of my closet, so they all get seen & used regularly.

You did a great job! I’m facing the same due to seasonal wardrobe and fluctuating weight therefore multiple sized of items. Once I go through my own stuff, I will then have to repeat this for the rest of the family. Having health problems makes this process very slow and difficult.

I took inspiration from this video and took it upon myself to count all the clothing I own. I have also downloaded a spreadsheet to attempt to track my wardrobe to see what stuff I really use and what stuff I am 'kidding' myself with. 🤞

Having this many clothes isn’t good, but neither is having 3 T-shirt’s y’all lmao

Estefanía ??? Is t saying that having too few (or too many) clothes “isn’t good” acknowledging that, on either extreme, you have a problem of some kind? I was directing my comment at the [many] comments from people trying to “flex” the fact that they only own like two outfits to be “unlike other girls.” None of the comments flexing their lack of clothing are from people in serious financial situations that can’ afford more clothes...

@Estefanía oh come on no one with internet is lacking the ability to get free clothes from craigslist/ebay

This is just incredible to see because even without counting, I know I currently own 1 dress (if I have a wedding to go to, I’d buy another), 0 skirts, and maybe 10 pairs of pants... some more sweaters and shirts, andddd 2 purses I switch out for fall/winter & spring/summer :) I like it that way but love watching decluttering videos

80% of my cloth I bought while traveling or going abroad. Now I am so emotional attached to every item that it’s so hard to get rid off, even though I don’t love all of them...

I love your approach to this! It was nice that you shared the tips and questions from the book as you were going along and that you made clear in what way you were thinking about your clothes and the way they make you feel/look. This was great, thanks! Have a nice day :)

I have spent the past five years paring down my closet. Every year I do a go through and now when I buy 1 item I get rid of one.
