I'm back! It's been a little over a month since my wedding and after a well-needed break from sewing (after finishing the massive project that was my wedding dress), I'm starting to feel my motivation to sew come back. To coax it back from exhaustion, I decided to take my time making the Seamwork Pauline skirt in an attempt to make a new wardrobe staple and I thought it'd be interesting to show you the process from beginning to end.

I've made the same mistake shortening garments. But I recently learned that when a pattern says "drafted for 5'8"" then you should divide that in half for the upper and lower half of the body. So, your 3" difference should be 1.5" for a bodice/top and 1.5" for the skirt/pants. Hope that helps!

I love this style! I agree with you I am not a big fan of the bias cut skirt as it really emphasizes the hips and butt. This is a great alternative that can be worn casually too. Thank you for sharing!

I’m inspired to make my Pauline now. I’ve been a member for two years but so far have only made two things. Both were successful but required a lot of adjustments for a beginner. I’m more confident about fitting now. The Pauline looks amazing on you gotta give it a whirl and hopefully remember the cutting advice.

I haven't seen anything from you since before your wedding so I had just watched an old video of yours - your beautiful vacation in Brittany! I watch Signe also and I know exactly what skirt you're talking about. In the end, your skirt is lovely and who cares what side the slit is on or what side the zip is on. :) And you will wear it for many years, loving it regardless of whatever is not what you thought it would be. Great to see you back Sarah! And pushing through your sewing slump :). We all have those and in my experience getting on with something, anything, is a great help to get you on track. I hope that we see more from you soon and that you're feeling better. Your skirt is lovely. The bias-bound waistband finish looks very polished. I too like to take my time with my sewing projects. I press slippery fabric with starch - to stabilize for laying out and cutting pattern pieces.

I love the skirt and only you know what the “mistake” is. I love the way you show how slowly you cut the fabric. Most people speed it up but it’s helpful to see how carefully the fabric is being handled. Also, I love the Penny dress that you were wearing at first. 😊

I was wondering if you have worked with linen? So many podcasters have sewn linen dresses and skirts. The fabric is expensive and I’m not sure how I feel about the wrinkling or pressing. I totally understand the need for a break from sewing!!

Yes I have! I recommend working with a linen blended with another fabric - my favorite is a linen and viscose blend. 100% linens tend to be a bit rough and scratchy, but blended with viscose, it not only become softer, but the drape is also softer and I find they wrinkle a bit less. Although, it will require a press (or steam) after each wash, they crumple up in the wash. I hope this helps!

The skirt turned out really well! I don't think it matters at all that the slit is on the other side, if the zip being on that side doesn't bother you. When shortening patterns based on the difference between your height and the height it is drafted for, try taking into account the proportion of your body the garment is covering. If it's a skirt so it's just on the lower half of your body, you could halve the difference between the heights. So only shorten by 1.5 inches rather than 3, for example. I'm on the tall side and thinking about it in this way has stopped me lengthening patterns by too much. I really enjoy the UseLess channel too - it's so nice to see someone with a minimal approach to their wardrobe incorporate colour in a really thoughtful way, rather than a just an expanse of black and beige like many others.

Oof I remember feeling a bit depressed after my wedding too. I hope you're feeling better! It took me a year to hit bottom and then bounce back, I think I felt guilty about not feeling 100% happy about how my wedding went (a lot of family arguments before and after really dampened my memories of the day, which went well itself). My husband had no negtaive feelings and it was hard to tell him I didnt feel the same, but I felt much better once I said it, literally on our first anniversary 😬 Not sure he enjoyed it though 😂

@@Sarah_Naomi awww I can relate so much 😱 I'll give you one single piece of unsollicitated advice: try to capture all the things that went well in one form or another (making an album, journaling, something like that). Our brains are wired to remember negative experiences over positive, and I've come to the point where 6 years later, I remember telling myself over and over how happy I was on the day, and I know I felt genuinely happy, but I almost only remember all the negative moments 😢 The positives just didn't stick in my memory. I wish I could go back and film the whole day so I would have some objective trace 😂 I'm not at all a negative person usually too 🤷🏼‍♀️

Ah! Thank you so much for this tip and I think it's exactly what I need to do! My husband (🥰) has tried reminding me of what went well and how happy we were, but it just isn't sticking, so I think that if I write it down and list all the things that were joyous about that day, then I could go back and reread it whenever the negative thoughts start circling. I’ve just read this and felt compelled to reply. I have now been married for 25 years. I was 23 and quite naive so let my family organise a lot of the wedding. There were guests that I didn’t want and some I wanted I could not invite due to the numbers. Not everything went according to plan. However, everyone had a great time and only I knew what went “wrong”. Without wanting to sound condescending, we need to remember that the wedding is only one day but a marriage, if you’re with the right person, will be a lifetime. This is what I kept reminding myself of when my mind tried to go down the negative path. My husband as like yours, couldn’t understand what I thought had gone wrong. 😊

I think it's quite similar to your helpful comment in reaction to the mistake I pointed out in my recent skirt in that a lot of the details that went wrong probably either weren't noticed or didn't matter at all to my guests. And you're right, it's just one day and all things considered, it was a very good day 😊
