Hi Will, just a couple of notes: - This was their FIRST ever live concert - Language is a blend of ancient Germanic/scandinavian languages, spoken around 8-9th century i believe. - Songs are inspired by real ancient objects that archeologist may have found in northern europe, revealing some ancient stories and events that really happened. - the instruments are inspired on what Vikings may have used in their music, and they're completely hadmade by Heilung themselves, using real skin, bones and stuff, mostly coming from already dead animals. they tend to carefully respect all nature and living beings. - Actually the band is formed by the 3 singers, all other guys on stage are session instrumentist. Which makes all this more epic considering how much work is put behind every member. - The band has been formed just "casually" because the main singer was composing just some poems inspired by the ancient stuff discovered in northern erurope, and met the second singer (the guy on the left) which is a producer, and he made all the music and they recorded the first songs (and i believe their first album). Maria joined the band just some time later, when they decided to become a full time band doing this music. i saw them live and they basically open with a ritual ceremony, and make a full spiritual ceremony, in which this song is the first one. This band live sounds 10 times better, also because a recorded live performance usually can't recreate the real acoustic properties of the instruments, which if you hear live, it will deliver a more powerful athmosphere, i really suggest you to go see them live if you're into this kind of music!

Many of the lyrics are directly from bracteates - tiny metal piece similar to coins or rune stones 🙂 The lyrics in their song “Krigsgaldr” for example are directly taken from the runic inscriptions on the Eggja stone found in Norway. Their instruments and clothing are self made, and their shaman drum is decorated with their own blood and even human bones are used as an instrument. They are….. incredible musicians too ❤❤❤

@Naunet7 Жыл бұрын
Heilung is German and means "Healing", by the way. Many of their lyrics are written in ancient Proto-Germanic language, which was a language spoken mostly in northern Germany up to Southern Scandinavia. They often use real preserved texts for some of their lyrics. These Germanic languages later developed into today's German, English, and most Scandinavian languages. As a German coming from those regions, where Proto-Germanic culture was happening, I can't understand anything they are singing, but the phonetic is sometimes strangely familiar 😊 But as it's a very old language, one can't really know for sure what it sounded like. I live close to some graves and a building of that time tho, so you can get kind of an idea how they lived back then.
@mero8374 Жыл бұрын
thanks for explaining! thats very interesting! do you know something about the things they are wearing? are these old german traditional styles or maybe adopted from scandinavia?
@Naunet7 Жыл бұрын
@@mero8374 While I'm not a historian, based on what I've seen in museums and read online, it seems that the clothing worn by Heilung may not have been typical everyday attire for that time period. If we're talking about the Bronze Age, most clothing was quite simple, often dark in color, as people were transitioning from using just animal hides to the first use of textile production. Surviving clothing sets are limited tho. But there are stone drawings suggesting that early Germanic peoples practiced rituals, including human sacrifice, divination, and had a spiritual connection with their natural environment. It's likely that they had priests or shamans who wore more elaborate clothing. Heilung seems to be offering their interpretation of such rituals, with their chants evoking a connection with nature and a sense of impending human sacrifice :D
@benedictul Жыл бұрын
The only word I got from their chant was "turisas", or "tursas" - because it's also the name of a Finnish band I listened to a while back, which apparently is the name given to some kind of sea monster, or a god of war. The wiktionary says it comes from Proto-Finnic *tursas, borrowed from Proto-Germanic *þurisaz (“giant, name of the Þ-rune; one of Odin's runes”). So that matches your Proto-Germanic description. Cool stuff, I have never heard of Heilung before. Their vocals are haunting. I wonder if they also use "traditional" 20th-century metal instruments in some of their songs, gotta check that out next.
@Naunet7 Жыл бұрын
@@benedictul Germanic Paganism is closely related to the old Scandinavian religions. Many of the deities in Germanic Paganism were known by similar names among the various Germanic peoples. The god known to the Germans as Wodan or Wōden was known to the Norse as Óðinn. Similarly, the god Thor was known to the Germans as Donar and to the Norse as Þórr (Thor). Interestingly, even today, the German word for thunder is "Donner," which is not too different from "Donar."
@Naunet7 Жыл бұрын
@@benedictul I've also just learned, that there were priestesses in Germanic Paganism. I quote: "Germanic priestesses were feared by the Romans, as tall women with glaring eyes, wearing flowing white gowns often wielded a knife for sacrificial offerings. Captives might have their throats cut and be bled into giant cauldrons or have their intestines opened up and the entrails thrown to the ground for prophetic readings." Hi Will, I saw Heilung in Denmark a few years back. It was so amazing and enchanting. There were parents with their kids, rich people with suits, metal heads in leather jackets and larpers in tunicas lol. The mix of people coming to see them was amazing. Heilung is about old germanic tribal 300AC folk music. Those drums hammer your body, triggering all kinds of primal feelings. They ended the show with one song with intense hammering on the drums and everyone in the crowd and I mean absolutely EVERYONE standing up hammering their feet into the ground. It wa so epic, so go see them if you can. It's a live performance to be remembered for sure!

@Luna-ff4uh Жыл бұрын
@@haulfr.channel no, but the bulk of the song is simply a repetition of the Elder Futhark. Also, thanks for the excuse to share what the beginning does mean. lol From a Heilung page: “Ek Erilaz Owlthuthewaz Niwaremariz Saawilagar Hateka Harja” can be found in the Lindholm Amulet where the line “ekerilazsa[w]ilagazhateka” or “Ek erilaz Sawilagaz haite'ka” is carved. Based on what wikipedia says about this: “This translates to "I am (an) erilaz (a rune master), I am called the wily” (or “I am called Sawilagaz). If the word in first line is translated as a name, Sawilagaz means "the one of the Sun (Sowilo).” If the word is translated as “the wily” or “crafty one” or “deceitful one,” then it may be related to a byname of Odin or another god.“ We can use this to help translate. The reason it feels like your being pulled into a ritual is because you are. The live set has all the components of a magical rite. The horn and yell at the beginning is the call to the rite. This song uses the elder futhark to create a sacred space. If you look at their shows this is followed by an invocation of Odin with Alfadhirhaiti, and a ritual sacrifice in traust. the last 2 songs are Eldansurin which is designed to get everyone dancing which builds energy then Hamrer Hippyer this again continues the build of energy in the room but also contains the healing spell. I am a practising heathen who regularly holds Blot rituals and ive rarely felt anything like the energy of a Heilung live ritual. You need to experience it its amazing.

The language Heilung used in this song is Proto-Germanic. Some members of the band are scholars, and the guy doing the really throaty vocals (Kai Uwe Faust) is the owner and proprieter of New Nordic Tattoo in Copenhagen, Denmark.

It’s so cute that Elizabeth got you into reactions. Thx Elizabeth, can’t wait to see you both again ❤ Some bands worth to check out: Rotting Christ - epic Greece black metal Alien Weaponry - guys from New Zealand singing in native language Avatar - they call themselves metal circus Brutus- more like post metal but vocalists is the drummer Nothing but Thieves- rock, but the are sooooo good

Saw them in concert last year and it was phenomenal!!! The whole thing felt like I was experiencing a story or legend that I didn't understand but felt. There was fire, dancing, fights, drama. They're just incredbile.

It just awakens this primal feeling that slumbers within all and seeing that live is just amazing. People couldn't stand up straight because the floorboards would just move up and down when everyone just vibed on the rythmic drumming.

Heilung is an interesting phenomena, because it is kinda hard to explain what they are! On one hand they are more metal then modern Metal , but on the other hand they often feels like a freaking rave! But all in a very natural ancient way. It always feels like you standing somewhere deep in a Dark forest with a lot of ppl in a Circle! And something , for me, very special is with Maria! Even in her very high register she has something very warm in her tone! I freaking love her voice!

Loved this reaction but also loved this band and song performed live. I, like you, never heard of them ever before but I'm a big fan of this shamanic style. I have heard Shamanic Dark Ambient music before but never really like this or otherwise performed live which is incredible. Thank you for this video and for introducing me too to them.

I truly adore Heilung, not only for their deep-rooted in-nature energy, but also because it reminds me so much of ancient Greek folklore music ( I am Greek btw so this is hitting close to home on so many levels). The similarities to me are enough to make my hair stand up and Maria is always killing it with her vocals, making the experience even more spiritual than it already was. I dont know why, but the first time I watched this live she reminded me a lot of early Bjork, another artist I love and appreciate. Thank you Will for this lovely reaction! 💖

Such a cool reaction, haha. To me it sounds like Maria is using some kind of version of kulning, which is basically called "cow singing". It's a herding call, Myrkur used it on her Folksange album. It's very similar to that and considering Heilung's content, I immediately thought of that.

Heilung is badass. Tribal, primal, visceral. Music that I like to think my ancient ancestors would recognize

Most of the lyrics in this are from the names of the Elder Futhark runes, but the others near the beginning and the middle were proto-Germanic. Also, that instrument you wondered about at 25:26 is called a Ravanahatha, and it comes from India. It makes a sort of droning sound

The instrument at 25:17 is called a ravanahatha, it's an ancient instrument that is the precursor to the violin. I believe the string is made from the femoral nerve of a deer.

Heilung reminds me of my proudest moment as a LARPer. I was playing a Druid/monk at a LARP in central Sweden and we were supposed to have a ceremony but the guy who had the script had a bit of a break down and had to take the day off. I was the PR-Druid of the order and sort of second in rank. So the ceremony fell in my lap and I had to improvise the whole ritual from scratch. Luckily I knew a bit of tuvan throat singing and just told my group to follow my lead and add their own thing. When night fell we gathered in a clearing with five statues and practically the whole town in tow. I silenced the audience and then set a basic rythm by thumping a staff on the ground. I then layed down a low drone of tuvan throat song and kept thumping. The next druid started humming and stomping his feet. Then another added her voice and began clapping and soon the whole clearing reverberated with voices and claps and thumps and I acted as a conductor of this mix of chaos and harmony, all while throat singing and slowly increasing the rythm to build upp a crescendo. I have no idea how many participated but as we peaked the howls, whistles and screams must have been heard for a mile through the woods. I have no clue what the ceremony was supposed to be like but I think we nailed it anyway. Heilung reminds me of that feeling.

Ooooh you are getting into Heilung, fantastic, I am so happy that Elizabeth suggested that to you! this band is a truly religious/spiritual experience live, I don't think I will ever experience something like that again in my life

Got an opportunity to see Heilung live in NYC last year. Went in completely blind with a few friends that said I'd enjoy their vibe. Comparing their music to a ritual is spot on because the entire show played out like a kind of pagan ritual. One of the most unique experiences ever, highly recommend checking them out live if they play in the city again. 🤘
