Okay, I've got it going a bit. Yes, it is meshtastic. I see that you were able to configure via your desktop. I used the app. How do I connect with the desktop? Does the charging cable actually transfer data? Do i have to flash the firmware?

I just ordered one of these to dabble around with while I'm in the ham shack. I don't have any Meshtastic devices yet. Are these direct messages to individuals, or is all of this in the clear?

Typically the primary channel is "Long Fast" with a shared encryption key. Direct Messages to an individual device are "private" as in they aren't seen by the other nodes. But they could be decrypted with that shared key on the common channel. Meshtastic just released certificate based encryption which would encrypt any custom channel you create and share between your devices. That is truly private.

@@ShotokuTech That sounds great! We aren't going to be sideways with our overlords at the FCC by obfiscating communications in 900mhz band are we? It's probably unlikely they have unique identifiers that would lead their fines to our door in this case if we did, which is nice.
