I don't know which country and which exam you are talking about but in USA, Canada, UK and Australia in Hight Schools and University/Colleges it is allowed. It can not save or store formula so I assume it is allwoed everywhere. But to be sure, ask yoiur school or your instructor.

Why would you do that? Just press two buttons and return to normal. In decimal mode try to see if it works for you
