Yes I would love to see some more videos of using the inktense pencils. I am thinking of using them on Elizabeths lost dress pattern. I would like to make a quilt in calico for my mother as she love that look and I thought these would give a delicate look and add a little bit of colour. Hi Helen,, I would love you to show a little bit about how to do the pastel shades for colouring with embroidery. It is a bit different to the bright colors . Do you use a textile medium? in place of water or after water . I am not sure how to start. Thanks..
@HelenGoddenQuilts4 жыл бұрын
You can see in the background of this piece I applied very little pencil and very lightly to obtain the pastel shade. The blue I used, if applied heavily is super bright blue. Less pigment and more water = pastel shades. Think of water as white, if you are on a white background fabric. So very little pencil and water = pastel

I would so love to see more of your work with inktense, I have the pencils and the blocks but still learning. Is there a way that is something does bleed and you really don't like it can it or how can it be fixed, is there a way to "rub it out" thanks
@HelenGoddenQuilts4 жыл бұрын
No there is no rubbing out. You can dab off excess colour while it is still wet. But once it has bleed into a wet area it keeps sharing the colour. If you work more systematically one area then another that aren’t touching each other and then wait till an area is dry before you go back there, no bleed.

Helen the calico you use seems very white the one I have is more cream I have washed & ironed, does it make a different the sort of calico used as I seem to be having problems with the material bleeding ?
@HelenGoddenQuilts4 жыл бұрын
Karyn Fraser the key is not to wash your calico! The calico has sizing in the fabric that stops the paint/INktense pencils from bleeding. Unwashed* calico is my secret. Good luck!

Hi Saira, yes you can use Derwent INKtense pencils on other fabrics. However the pencils are transparent so wont show up on darker coloured fabrics. I painted onto unwashed calico fabric to stop the pencils from bleeding.

JoAnn Fabric's has muslin here in the U.S., but it isn't stiff, so the Inktense bleeds significantly. Other than calico or muslin, is there another name for the fabric you recommend?
@helengodden22832 жыл бұрын
Whatever it is called is kind of irrelevant. What’s important is whether it passes the Water Flick test. Flick water on the unwashed fabric and see if it bleeds or beads. We want beads.

@HelenGoddenQuiltsАй бұрын
No. They are not washable unless you paint over it with fabric medium over the top.
@Bev-inWA4 ай бұрын
Before I watched this video, I read some tips on another site. This tip is very confusing: “Inktense pencils are permanent on fabric once all color has been washed out and no pencil marks remain. Any remaining pencil marks will run.” Does this mean that, if I miss painting over any pencil mark with water, when the quilt is washed the color on the missed part will run?
@HelenGoddenQuilts4 ай бұрын
Is this a comment I made or the other site? The pigment needs to be activated with water to make it ink-like and it goes into the fibres and dyes the fabric. If not gently activated, as demonstrated , it will definitely wash off. Inktense how I demonstrate is on unwashed calico/ muslin and for art work not planning on washing. I can not answer a question about I go from another site. .
