I'm glad to find this video. :) I got a 5 year old girl a month or so ago. She is a Duroc/landrace cross. My friend and I just started ai on her today. Our plan is to chose the 2 best girls, then breed her again. And pick the 2 best from that litter. Then pick the best 2 of those 4 to keep.

Time of year when it is hot August Early September here in the south you may need to stop and use a garden hose to wet them down especially if the Temps are in the upper 80's low 90's Most pigs even in a trailer will lay down in a pile while moving and when you get them home give them some wet feed wheat middlings well soaked in water they'll digest it better and it'll help keep them hydrated..

I am a missionary serving in Liberia. I’m in the process of developing a pastor training center and permaculture model farm. In the near future, I want to add pasture/forest pigs to our livestock mix. This video was helpful in preparing me when I go to select our first weaned piglets. Thanks!

It's best to have a quarantine pen area to keep new batch of pigs if you already have some on hand already...10 days to 2 weeks should be sufficient amount of time to quarantine .

@@SheratonParkFarms ...your pigs are such good examples of healthy pigs. And such a nice clean and healthy set up. We dont have pigs here but take advantage of our Amish. neighbors pig operation. He has Large Black x Berkshire.

Thanks for the info! We’re struggling trying to find decent priced piglets. Most of the ones we see listed are ‘show pigs’ and they want a minimum of $250 each.

Why do you leave all of the stripped branches in the paddock? Just a question of why don't you spread them so they break down faster or they can use the shreaded wood for beding

I’ve enjoyed you videos. I learn new things as I watch each one. I hope to start raising pigs in the future. I love the Berkshire breed and that is what I want to raise. Your pigs all look great. I love how honest you are and not afraid to tell us when you make a mistake. Wish thing would have worked out better with Helen . Is there any way to know about the birth canal issues before they are bred . I had the same issue a few years ago with a Hampshire that not fun at all. We ended up just eating her after recovery from. a C section. Any thoughts are helpful

He uses a much smaller pin to "train" them to electric fence. Normally a week or so later you can move them to a two strand polybraid pasture fence. Unfortunately there is no x number of pigs per acre. It really just depends on your property. Start small and work into it.

You mentioned that one should not buy anything older than 14 weeks; why? I have a line on duroc/berk that are 125 lbs, is that too old in your opinion?
@SheratonParkFarms
@SheratonParkFarms 3 жыл бұрын
If you are going to have to castrate, 14 weeks is about the max you can do it yourself. No, that wouldn't be too old at all.
