I, TonyF2, show how I got TF2's (Team Fortress 2) most absurd achievement, On The Rocks. On The Rocks is the most absurd achievement in valve's game team fortress 2. Using the character The Heavy AKA Heavy.

TF2, Team Fortress 2, was developed and published by Valve Corporation on October 10, 2007. TF2 has a variety of characters, my favorite being Engineer, including engineer, scout, pryo, spy, heavy, medic, demoman, and pyro. This is like Meet The Sniper, Meet The Scout, Meet The Pyro, Meet The Spy, Meet The Medic, Meet The Demoman, Meet The Heavy, and Meet The Engineer.
A gameplay video, and also commentary, with storytelling in Team Fortress 2, TF2, the game published by Valve Corporation. This is a fun/funny, entertaining video about TF2 and TF2's hardest achievement.

I got this achievement unexpectedly one day and a friend of mine vowed he would soon achieve it as well. His quest went on for a month or so and one day, after a moderate amount of trolling on his part, I declared that I would lose 3 times in a row with rock in front of him at that very instant. I found myself a good lil' pyro friend, and promptly lost the next 3 games with rock, getting the achievement s second time on command, right before his very eyes. Ralph has never been the same.

It’s bizarre but makes sense since if you play an opposing player and win, they die (and if you lose, you die). It’s easier to win three in a row since you don’t have respawn and come back to find a player than it is losing three in a row.

Actually… I had to look up a formula for this scenario, as it’s not quite so simple. (If you somehow always succeeded twice before failing, then you would have to play 3 new games each time… But if you fail faster, on the first or second attempt, then sets of 3 can overlap) The upshot is, we ultimately need to multiply by the factor 91/81 to get the true answer (rather than 3, like I did initially): 729 * 91/81 = 819 games… So he was still a bit lucky, but not nearly as much as I originally thought (Intuitively, we can think of 91/81 = 1 + 1/9 + 1/81 as just probabilistically adding extra games: 100% of the time we need at least 1 unique game per set, but 1/9th of the time we succeed once first and need at least 2 unique games, and 1/81st of the time we succeed twice and need 3 unique games) The general formula for expected trials until n successes in a row is [1 + p + p^2 + … + p^(n-1)] / p^n, which can also be written as [p^(-n) - 1] / [1 - p], where p = 1/9 was our probability of success. This second form does not demonstrate the answer as some factor times 729, but it’s easier to calculate in general

@@Muhahahahaz Well the statistics also become weird because you're looking at a streak, which includes previous trials - so say S represents success and F represents failure for the 1/9, a record of SFFSSFFFFSFFFSF would not be separated out into just "SFF" "SSF" "FFF" "SFF" "FSF", since you wouldn't say "Well you missed the chance 5 times" when you had one two-streak and three isolated successes. There is a complex formula for calculating probability of a streak across N trials, but you start to reach a favorable likelihood (where it crosses higher than 50%) at ~570 - he was in fact unlucky, though not significantly, for it to take 736 trials.

Around the time this taunt came out, my friend and I were playing Saxton Hale 24/7 during that summer, so I’d play as Engineer, make a Level 2 Sentry (it would allow for more pushback than Level 3), and basically camp while doing the RPS taunt over and over until Saxton Hale found us. I got both the Lose Rock and Win Scissors achievements by accident back in July 2014, which made my friend a bit annoyed because he was big into achievement hunting at the time 😂 I’m still dumbfounded how I got both without trying when they’re so unlikely to begin with

It is actually a 1/3 for someone to throw anything and then a 1/2 for the opponent to throw a win or lose. RPS never ends in a tie in TF2, so it is 1/6^3

The odds are actually better than 1 in 729. In TF2, you never play the same option as your partner. So, for example, if you pick rock your partner will not pick rock. They are limited to paper or scissors. So in reality your odds are the 1 in 3 chance to pick rock, and then the 1 in 2 chance for your partner to pick paper. This brings the odds for each game to 1 in 6, or 1 in 216 for 3 times in a row, about 3 times better than the 1 in 729 odds.

I also have a theory that the odds may not be perfect like that. The achievement for winning with scissors 3 times is more common than losing with rock, and in the video Tony got the scissors achievement at about what you would expect for 1 in 216, but the rock achievement at what you would expect from 1 in 729. I'm wondering if it is the 1 in 3 chance both times and if it ties tf2 will award the tie to the person who originally started the taunt. This means that for any given throw the chances for the starting player are actually 2 in 3 to win, and 1 in 3 to lose due to the tie being awarded to the starting player. This may explain why even with these modified odds it took Tony so long to get the achievement, and why it's much rarer/harder to get the achievement for losing than the one for winning.

The RPS achievments were so much fun to get with my friend. Basically what we did was queue for casuals. Then we would sit in just some corner of the map or in really dumb spots as scout and just constantly RPS. It was amazing too cause we'd have people watch us as they'd leave their spawn or we'd be in some random corner on a map and all someone would hear is just 2 scouts yelling about RPS. That was so much fun

3:30 the calculation there is incorrect because 1/729 is for every 3 games. Since there are 6 games every hour, there are 2 pairs of 3 every hour. The 1/729 means there would have to be 729, 3 games in order to get this number. Therefore, we can divide 729 by 2 pairs of 3 every hour, thus requiring 364.5 hours to acquire this achievement.
