You, Sean, are an asset to the photography community and artists in general. The content in the video is such a rare real-life view and advice coming from someone at a unique perch - neither as the photographer nor as the consumer, but someone who sees all variations of the whole business end-to-end, and therefore so beneficial to hear from. Thank you for putting in the work to bring it out to light and share it with everyone.

Your video couldn’t have come at a better time. About 8 years ago at the age of 62 I decided to take up photography again, a hobby I hadn’t touched in 45 years. I have always wanted to be GOOD at something and I was hoping this could be it. Most of my endeavors and accomplishments have been average at best. Being an introvert with social anxiety disorder hasn’t helped. Now at 70 and having my passion for photography rekindled I found myself wondering, am I finally GOOD enough to actually sell my images. Your video has given me the push I needed to try and sell my work. I don’t expect to make much money or sell a lot of prints, but if a few people appreciate and value my photos enough to purchase them…..well maybe that will finally validate that I am actually GOOD at something. Thank you so much.🙏

I hold both a BA and MA in art and photography. Art schools don't do enough to prepare students for the marketplace. This applies to the vast majority of university art schools in the UK. One of the reasons for this is that the vast majority of lecturers and tutors at university art schools have themselves little or no experience of the commercial art market. They are mostly professional educationalists and academics who have made an entire career out of teaching.

I'm so happy to learn they are in Germany now too! I thought they were cut off from the world by Brexit. I ordered their sample pack a long time ago but never really went into it. I long to get into printing but I'm still a bit scared because I don't know anything yet about the process of: - Artist authentication - Pricing for smaller and bigger works - The rules of limited numbers of prints - What art collectors do and don't appreciate - The actual craft of picking the right paper or other base material, printing type and frames - What to do myself and what to outsource I'm just putting all this stuff out here to hopefully inspire someone to make a vid on the topic :P Meanwhile I'll just be starting. I just ordered a sample pack for photography and this has been on my mind for a month and this is a nice clear starting sign 🙂 Thanks Sean and Stuart!

You have posted some excellent content over the years, but this is a mindblowing game changer, and at just the right time for me. Interestingly enough, your first post about using a printing service (Advice on Printing your Images) opened up several possibilities for me, and now this, 5 years later. So, lots of reading and research and restructuring to do, but that is part of the ongoing journey. Thank you.

Good video. One word of warning to all that are considering hiring an artist representative to assist you...vet them well before you hire. I work a lot of hours at my work-a-day job and needed help with getting into galleries. Trusted someone to do good honest and ethic work form me and instead they destroyed my business reputation and I have been fighting for almost 3 years to recover it to no avail. Battling very hard right now to the point of not having time to shoot anymore. So watch yourselves and don't go in blind trusting anyone.

It was good to see the people behind the business, it definitely reassured me that they're definitely people I would trust with my work! Thanks again for the great video 👍🏼

Think the main thing about what Stuart mentioned with artists not thinking too much about comercializing their work is that it also puts pressure on your mind. If you are a true artist you do what you do because you love to do it and/or want to express yourself. Adding commercial thoughts to that adds a level of "need" to it that people fear to dampen the creativity. If you have to deliver, have to do something to pay your bills then you are no longer free to do what you want and whenever you want, you might feel that you need to force creativity instead of letting it come to you.

I always love the slower, philosophical nature of your channel, and this video in particular feels very resonant for me right now. as I/many of us fight the Reels trend, etc. this video reminded me that the connection to the artist is important to build connection to the art and challenged me to find new ways to engage with my own online presence in a way that might continue to build understanding around what i do and why i do it, for those who might be interested. Thanks so much for making this video. truly helpful.

I think most photographers assume that other photographers want to go pro or at least sell their work. And I think there’s an assumption that you’re not successful if you don’t do those things. But the problem is, not everyone wants to do that and not everyone has the economic imperative that compels them to do so.

Interesting video as usual Sean. It would have been nice though to talk about photographers at the other end of the scale and just starting out as opposed to masters like Dougie Wallace who are established photographers. It's not just photographers. Artists in general get little training in the business of art. I speak from personal experience, albeit my art degree is from decades ago. Back then, before the Internet, it was galleries or bust. Today an artist has many more options to market themselves and sell independently. But I don't know if they're yet being educated on how to do so. I recently started setting up a shop on my website, but I didn't finish. I need to get on the ball.

I had an Etsy shop of my prints up for a year with no interest at all. I was marketing framed prints which due to having to outsource the printing, was causing me to sell at a high price. I changed my business model, bought my own printer and sell just prints only. Within a week, I sold 4 prints and made a higher profit due to printing my own. So chuffed that people have chosen to hang my artwork on their wall.

@@kingkevinhector Hi Kevin. Well I made a bit of a error there. I went on holiday for 3 weeks start of August. I didn't want to take any orders while I was away, so I thought I'd suspend the account. Looks like I deleted all the listings so I need to reload them all 🙄🤬. But, I will set Etsy up again. I don't like their fees, but it is a way to get noticed. The timing of this video is uncanny. As a hobby photographer that only started almost a year ago, I have no great ambition of making photography my living, but I have lately been playing with the idea of printing some of my pieces just for myself and friends. I had no idea where to start, and this video was exactly what I needed. It also got me thinking... Even though I don't intend to live off photography, there's no reason why I can't make some pocket money with it. And since I have no expectations whatsoever, I really have nothing to lose. So thank you, Sean. It was very lovely meeting you in London the other day, and your video never fails to inspire. I've just ordered my sample pack from the Print Space!

Whether it's selling my work or charging to do a shoot I seem to get nowhere. It seems that everyone loves my work until I ask them to pay for it. Is this normal or is my work just not worthy. I love my time spent behind my camera and the editing that follows but I am still no further forward, maybe it's just a hobby and nothing more.
