I just started raising birds last year Ducks, chickens, geese, quail, turkeys This is what i have found to be the best all in one routine for all bird's when raising poultry in a coup My biggest rule for my coup is if it's aggressive it has to go, when there's a coup bully no one will be happy or as productive, you will have injured birds and an uncomfortable home for your poultry, they will be constantly rattled up I give all my birds a normal light in the summer and a heat lamp in the winter I leave the light on day and night but i give them a section that blocks out light so they can choose to go in to the lighted area or the dark area whenever they want to sleep so that way i don't have to worry about lights but they also get to decide when they want a break They don't need a heat lamp in winter days as long as they all have shelter (keeping it above about 30⁰) but i prefer to give them a comfortable area to sleep and dry off, it helps relieve stress free/calm environment and is an easy win/win (I keep the quail inside) The quail get a tub of sand and a tub of dirt to play in and bathe in, the sand also acts as a grit for the quail I give all the birds exept quail-mash (water/food mix) with a small suppliment of calcium and grit, the quail get just a food/water mash mixture (don't over feed, it needs to all be eaten because it only lasts about 2 days before bacteria grows and will make the birds sick so toss that out) when done right, it helps them hydrate and digest easier My turkeys get the same food as the chickens, ducks and geese so i add a small scoop of basic cat food for protein suppliment but don't do this for chicks/poults/goslings only adult birds because adults handle food separations since they eat more and will get all the different foods in the mixture in one big bite I add apple cider vinegar to all my bird's water, if they don't like it you can add it to the mash instead or just add less to the water, it helps with gut support During winter i provide a water dish deep enough for the ducks to hop into so they can clean their nostrils and clean them selves and during summer they get a small pool All my birds stay naturally clean except the quail they like sleeping on eachother for some odd reason in a dog pile sometimes all lined up facing the same direction like a pack of marshmallow peeps it freaks me out slightly, they get pooped on by eachother constantly haha They aren't cold, sick or scared, they just prefer to sleep together so they get wiped down every week or 2 which helps them get used to handling, creating trust and over all non-aggressive reactions toward you when gathering eggs, doing health checks or checking on naturally hatching eggs Hens of all types seem to happily lay more often if you provide clean laying boxes with privacy walls so mine get new bedding every few days and the quail get fresh/sifted sand just as often During summer all birds exept quail get to free range and are locked up at night All my birds lay at an early age, lay nice eggs every day, they are all super healthy, happy, vibrant and clean That is most of what i have found helpful for my successful flock and i hope this helps any new or experienced poultry raisers

I'm using a Wynola Ranch 3 Tier Cage. I have 34 quail setup in my garage. Next to a window also with timed lights to make up for the winter hours. Top cage has a partition so I have the 5:1 setup on the left and right with 8 week olds. My bottom 2 cages have my 4 week old males in one cage and the 4 week old females in the other. I butchered eight of my 8 week old males this past weekend. Will do the same to my 4 week old males when they reach maturity. Thanks for all the help Zack. I'm getting eggs daily.

@@jmcast3195 To be honest I'm still not use to butchering. I've butchered around 20 birds now and it's only gotten slightly easier. I guess it's more so that I know what I'm doing. I still kind of freakout when I have to chop the head off and the body still shivers and shakes vigorously. I love going out to my garage everyday to get fresh eggs tho. Such a great resource to have.

I have a question about the supplemental light. In the winter, of course the days are much shorter, so the light doesn't hit anywhere near 16 hours. So my question is this: Do you supplement with UV light for vitamin D and other health benefits of UV light? Do you use a different kind of special light, or do you use regular old household LED lights? Perhaps a combo of above? Maybe this is a Dum-Dum question, but I would really love your feedback - thanks : )

What about sounds like farm equipment, will loud noise cause problems with laying?

Hi, I have a 300sf aviary in my backyard. I have coturnix and bobwhite together in aviary. Everyone seems to get along ok. My question is that I have what I believe to be 1 coturnix female that lays a kinda ugly egg that looks like colors are blended and actually has a rough texture. Is this normal or does it indicate a deficiency of some sort. Robert

Zack mate. It's Kerry from Australia here. Your videos were the spark that got my love of qauil and business started. Your famous in my family 👪. Keep your inspiration going. Question I do have tho, what weight is a good weight for breeders please?
@MyshireFarm
@MyshireFarm 2 жыл бұрын
It really depends on how what you are breeding. For jumbos we do not breed anything below 12.5 oz at 8 weeks but standards are very different. You want to get an average of what you have and then use anything over that to keep building your weight and good luck on your journey and thanks for watching

So I have a 4 tier hatching time cage setup. How many quail do you recommend per cage? 1 Roo per door/compartment and how many hens?
@MyshireFarm

I'm sure you said it a million times. But what do you feed your adults. In the past I did a 22% layer and game bird starter half and half. Someone told me o ly do 16% layer and my results either haven't been good or I'm doing something else wrong

When you say 5:1 boy/girl for groups with a 3-1 sqft room- if you have a 1.5x2.1 sq ft cage would you put 15 girls and 3 boys all together in the same cage? If so: will head count change for jumbos?
@mathlady5873
@mathlady5873 2 жыл бұрын
What I heard and understood from the video was 3 birds per square foot. With your dimensions you would have a little more than 3 square feet which would mean 9 birds per cage.
@soswanson9120
@soswanson9120 2 жыл бұрын
The 3 per square feet is actually a jumbo count, they say 3.5 if you have standard quail. Tho 3 per is so much easier to remember and that's good for Jumbo. So your 1.5 x 2 =3 sq ft x 3 per is about 9 total.
@MyshireFarm
@MyshireFarm 2 жыл бұрын
It would be about 9 quail so if I were you I would cheat just a little and do 8 hens and 2 males for maximum production
@calvinlawrence1250
@calvinlawrence1250 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks to all for your replies. Very much appreciated. My miss calculations would prove disastrous. If I run 8 hens and 2 roosters will that be too much for the room? Or other possibility: 1) 8 girls/2 boys- maybe the boys will fight? 2) 6 girls/1 boy and a lot of extra room? 3) open to suggestions… I have already built the cages so can’t change the dimensions.
@feathernshell4923
@feathernshell4923 2 жыл бұрын
@@calvinlawrence1250 10 as opposed to the 9 suggested should not really be a problem. If they are standard, you could do a couple more so you'd be ok. The 8 girls and 2 boys, I would run it and watch, just to make sure the hens are not the worse for wear and if they start losing a lot of head/neck feathers then I'd consider a change to limit the boys.
