Getting Things Done || Reupholstering My Dining Room Chairs || Part One

My Great Challenge

My Great Challenge

Күн бұрын

I finally took the plunge and am reupholstering my two dining room chairs. These were Quadrant Chairs from Century Furniture, NC, I had found on the street. They were meant to be accent chairs and silk covered. Needless to say, the silk did not last long with both Scott and I sitting on them daily for the past 6 or so years. The fabric is gone! In an attempt to save these high-end chairs, I am reupholstering them. I have never done this before but have a general idea of what needs to happen here. What's the worst that could happen? Wish me luck!
Enjoy!

You are to take the seat part off from the bottom. Wrap the batting and material around the seat, staple it underneath. The trim is added after the material is secure. A lot of old chairs has it screwed in from the bottom. Hard to explain. Wish I was there to show you. 😊 Either way you did a great job.

I think for a first ever attempt you did a really brilliant job Sophia. The fabric is gorgeous and really suits the chairs. I definitely think you picked the right trim, it blends in and sets off the fabric without overshadowing it. My mum went to professional upholstery class and what you did with your chair is so similar to what she was taught. Professional upholsterers use special fabric stretchers and fabric pleating tools, which you didn’t have. Plus they use specific fabric tacks or have specialist fabric staples rather than using a standard stapler. That said, you should be so proud of what you achieved and so proud that you are encouraging others to have a go at doing these types of activities. Love that you are so empowering and inspiring.

I think you can leave the back alone - it's a complimentary fabric with color and adds a nice touch. Just my humble opinion. :-)

A great improvement. I think a very useful addition to your diy equipment would be a magnetic dish to collect all the loose screws and staples during your projects. They’re not expensive. Good for sewing needles and pins too.

🎉🎉🎉fantastic job! I tried my dining chairs 15-odd years ago and I failed-they were done but I goofed on thickness of the cushion. It was a valuable learning experience and I would definitely try again in a heartbeat.❤ I absolutely LOVE this series -the encouragement you provide is immeasurable. We can do anything if we try and we just have to try! (I’m currently expanding my garden thanks to you!👍🌻) You’re awesome as always!!

Don't know. I just followed the way it was done with the silk fabric. They tacked it directly to the frame. Going to assume the seat is integrated to the frame with the springs etc. My other chairs I was able to remove the seat, so I am aware you can do that too.

Great job! Love the fabric and the trim you chose! I am very interested because there are two chairs that were my grandmother’s and are going to have to be redone. You have encouraged me to try this myself! If I mess up I will take it to an upholstery shop and let them have a go at it. Love your channel because it empowers us to try things ourselves!

The old fabric is usually used as a template for cutting the new fabric out, just a tip in case you have to do it again. Also most of those chair seats can be removed by screws once you lift up the black fabric that covers the bottom on the seat. Some older chair seats don’t have the ability to be removed. Either way recovering chairs is a fun and interesting process! And the result is usally well worth the effort involved. 👍🏽

Before you attempt to redo the second chair, see if you can remove the seat cushion from the frame of the chair from underneath. I've done that in the past. Makes it so much easier. Plus I use the previous fabric as a pattern for cutting out the new fabric.

Sofia, you inspire us to try to do things ourselves and step outside our comfort zone. I just painted my kitchen and I’m doing the cabinets now. You motivated me and inspired me. I’ve been looking to switch out my kitchen sink and could never find the one I really wanted I kept telling my husband that when I found the one I really wanted I would change it. Well I finally found it yesterday and installed today. I absolutely love it. You're doing a great job! 🙂Excellent choice in trim. Beautiful Fabric, and everyone has to start somewhere. For a beginner you're doing fantastic. and your first chair is not the simplest chair style to do. You're right that in upholstery its more time consuming than anything. That and making sure that one has the right amount of fabric. Your idea of having a different fabric for the seat backs is a great one. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the project.

I was yelling at the screen, "Use the batting for a pattern for the fabric!" the whole time you were spraying and sticking it down! LOL! I vote for the WIDE trim, I tend to be a bit "extra"! You could leave the back as is. Well done! The chair is so beautiful already!

Just a thought the fabric at the backside is in perfect condition and is beautiful, why you only change the fabric at the front, thinking what you said that you don't have enough fabric. Have you considered taking the cushion out, so is easier to work? Sorry for my english.

We might be divided over the trim, but obviously the right is choice is according to what you like. I like the narrow green trim the best. Aside from the challenge of the curves, the wider seems easier to make cover completely. The wider trim asks for attention and competes a bit with the fabric. The new seat looks great. Good job.

Preach Sophia preach....yes, we need to try things. Like I've mentioned before, I'm about to turn 60 in 4months, I still work full time and I still take time to just to enjoy life, golf, go on short trips with the hubby, etc....Just this past Saturday I started to paint my kitchen (it's a small kitchen) and I removed an old phone jack and there was hole behind it, I needed a patch cause the whole was about a size of 1/2 dollar, I didn't have the patch so the job is still not 100% complete but it is about 97% complete, I know I will finish it soon cause it will get on my last nerve the more I see it. LOL!!! Like you I had started a different task prior and that too is still waiting...LMBO!!! they will get done. I personally think you did a A+ job..... keep doing what you enjoy and thank you again for sharing.

I think you did a great job if this is your first time doing this type of project! I don't think I would change out the back of the chair, it coordinates with the seat fabric very well on camera and you see that a lot in this type of chair. If I could see that I was not going to be able to get the smooth fabric in the corner areas, I would make it look intentional and make them like small pleats and repeat on each side. The smaller trim was definitely the way to go for a chair application. The kit kat is too funny!

Your chair looks great so far! I'm really impressed with your fabric and trim choices. Being an amateur furniture restorer myself, I have a couple of tips. The seat portion of your chair may be removable by looking underneath it. Then you can add your batting and fabric without all the cutting of the fabric around the wood. You would staple or glue the fabric to the bottom of the wooden plate under the seat. For the hot glue, silicone thimbles will protect your fingers. :) You still did an amazing job! :)

You.are very patient and kind to your kittys and it is obvious you care very much for all your animals. You do realize that you can train them not scratch your furniture. I've had cats most of my life, they were allowed on the furniture for and on my bed (but not on the sheets or pillows) but were never allowed to scratch on the furniture, even with up to 4 cats at in the house ata time. Good scratching posts and catching them in the act the first few times thet tried stopped it. I know you saidyou dotcare if they scratched these chairs, but when you grt the nicer ones, upolstered with expensive fabric you may care and it will be hard to break bad habits. It is much better train them while they are young.
