When you are far out like that (near the end of your video) you can change the thrust limiter on your thrusters/boosters (right click on them) to something much much lower which will give you much lower powered burns which will give more accuracy when fine-tuning the orbits.

One piece of advice for transfer orbits, when you burn, make it so that the exit orbit lines up with the orbit of kerbin in the direction you want to go. This will give you the maximum efficiency.

My first succesful Duna mission was a giant space train with a Duna lander, habitation module (all 12 kerbals), nuclear tug (two orange tanks), LG-2 module (always running to give me steady science income) and an Ike kit (Apollo-style module with a lander and a service module). It's not exactly cheap, but it's supposed to be reusable (with proper aerobraking). It's currently orbiting Duna sciencing hell out of the science stuff I got. I'm planning to return it to LKO in a year or so, where it will continue to run its lab. Then it will be upgraded.

@woodway92868 жыл бұрын
Oh, I get it. You can keep reusing those instruments since you'll be transmitting. I've been taking everything back to Kerbin, so I'm used to needing multiples.
@MarcusHouse8 жыл бұрын
Yes seeing as these probes will never return, I just whacked on single basic ones for transmission. I rarely even bother with units like the Goo/Science Jr as you can only use em once, and most of the science needs to be returned to be utilised.

how much delta-v should my rocket have if i want to send kerbals on a full round-trip to duna and back? please tell me along with the breakup of your calculations. thanks! for example 3400 is required to get into orbit around kerbin. 960 required to escape influence of kerbin. 130+10 required to intercept duna along with maximum plane change. then, 250+360 to circularize around low orbit in duna. then, landing via aerobraking. now tell me the delta-v requirements for the journey back 'cause that's the part i find confusing. pleaseeeee!
@MarcusHouse8 жыл бұрын
This is your best bet for making rought guesses (then add 10% on top). wiki.kerbalspaceprogram.com/wiki/File:KerbinDeltaVMap.png Basically for a return trip without aerobraking (which you should do if you can) at Duna you need around 8,500ish m/s minimum. If you can aerorbrake and avoid inclination changes, perhaps a bit less. This is of course assuming you are doing it all with one vessel. Normally I would have a little lander that would dip down to Duna and back then be discarded (kind of like the Apollo missions). I would like to do an episode on just this thing at some point so the seed is now planted.
@niteshmurti8 жыл бұрын

Pretty much the same for anything now outside Kerbins SOI since 2.1. You will need a relay. I generally just take the biggest one with me and leave it in a polar orbit of the main body along with the Survey Scanner. :)
@ArthurKorn6 жыл бұрын
Regarding the solar (kerbolar?) panel positioning: you keep saying you spread them around the circumvence of the craft to avoid shading. I like to have all the servo axis of the panels in parallel though. Between burns I'll point the servo axis perpendicular to the orbital plane, that way all the panels can servo themselves to perfectly point at the Kerbol. A bit of pitching will prevent the corner case where the first panel shades all the others. I didn't build any landers yet that need more than one pair of panels, I think it would still work on surfaces (to some degree, limited by only having roll axis freedom) except when the sun is perfectly straight up.

Lol so I landed the lab on minmus and decided that a second lab landed on the mun would be cool. Now I'm swimming in science. Funny thing about the one on the mun, I landed it on the far side of the mun so there is no comms with Kerbin. Had to make a satellite just so I could transfer all that science back lol.
@spookykitty23276 жыл бұрын
I created an SLS style rocket, it was only like 100,000 and I only thought it could bring a heavy satellite to high Kerbin orbit. I was able to force an encounter with Duna, got science from there and Ike, landed (without gear), took off, force an encounter with Kerbin, land on the Mun, takeoff, and get into Keostationary orbit right above the KSC (no parachutes and not enough fuel for powered landing). Guess NASA knows how to design an efficient rocket...

I love this series, I have learned a lot.I attempted this mission last night. It all worked as you described except for one small problem. I am running 1.2 with the CommNet enabled. I by the time I got to Duna I had lost control of the probes. I had to turn off CommNet to finish the mission. I am now in the process of planning for Relay satellites to go in front of a manned mission.Can you suggest some changes to your probe missions that would make it possible to play with CommNet enabled?
@MarcusHouse8 жыл бұрын
In this case you need to have one long distance comm satellite orbiting at Duna (can be in any orbit really, but I generally recommend a very high polar orbit). On this sat you want one of the largish sat dishes (not the biggest, but I generally like to use the medium sized one). I am thinking of doing a non-edited play-though from scratch again but not sure if people would like it. It would be largely non-edited (maybe some fast forwarding, but other than that). Now that 1.2 is out I doubt there will be many more huge things added to the game like the comm system.
@kevindewire20248 жыл бұрын

would it be a good idea to do some missions within kerbins soi while a ship is heading to duna
@MarcusHouse8 жыл бұрын
Depends what you are doing. If you had a mother ship that was in a highly elliptical orbit (just prior to leaving Kerbins SOI, shooting little lander vessels off those, doing a Minmus or Mun landing and then doing a re-encounter with the mothership on the next orbit can be beneficial. Remember that if you do an encounter with the Mun as an example, then leave the SOI of Kerbin, you will loose all the Oberth effect advantage you get if doing a Duna injection burn from lower in Kerbins gravity well. This may help explain the reason why it is so good to use the Obert Effect to your advantage. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fISqZGaedtmWasU

+Marcus House what I mean is while the ship is taking nearly a year to reach duna you can launch other ships to do rescue missions, plant flags ect.

Oh yea sure that is totally fine. In fact the mod Kerbal alarm clock will make sure that you don't miss important parts of the missions that are on going. @MarcusHouse8 жыл бұрын
Not sure I know exactly what you mean there. A gravity turn should slowly turn your vessel towards the horizon through the launch (generally heading 90 degrees). If you start the gravity turn too early, you won't get enough altitude to get out of the atmosphere efficiently (I generally start the gravity turn at about 150m/s).

This has been by far the most annoying planet to land on, It took me a good 20 minutes for my manoeuvre nodes to encounter the planet because it would not want to find it Then when I do the burn to get on a trajectory to Duna, it always overshoots or something and it won't let me correct it so I have to reload the save. Probes are stupid for science mode! You cannot get crew reports and no eva as well.

I made a Big rocket for duna. didnt get to orbit of duna. This little one made it. FML.

:) One thing to keep in mind that the delta-v means nothing if the Thrust to Weight ratio isn't high enough through launch parts of your mission. You can have 40,000 delta-v but move nowhere. Important to ensure that your escape from Kerbin and Duna's surface to orbit is efficient.

I would like to give you my compliments for your amazing Quick progression series on career mode. But, there is something that you have done and you did not say. YOU HAVE DISABLED the necessity to has an antenna for transmission of date... In other words, you are cheating. Shame!

In this old version ok KSP there were no comm system requirements. This same vessel will not work now.
