One of the best chess videos I've ever seen (and I've seen thousands!). Absolutely fantastic, thank you!

Many years gone since I have seen it for the first time, and it's always amazing what you need to do. Although it is unbelievable difficult to calculate sometimes. Thank you for the video.

I only discovered this concept this week in Znosko-Borovsky's book on the endgame. As I couldn't understand it at all I came to good old youtube and was lucky to find you immediately. What a superb, clear explanation of a very difficult (for some, and certainly for this 1500 who still manages to occasionally blunder his Queen) concept. Thank-you very much.

Thank you. I have been banging my head against a wall trying to get through this section of the first chapter of Dvoretsky's Engame Manual - this helps so much.

This is absolutely fantastic. Oddly, seeing the difficult example hammered home the importance of this topic far more than all the 'easy' triangulation examples I've seen. I first saw your analysis from GM Smirnov's website, and I was struck by your clarity in explaining abstract concepts (including here). I'm so happy you have your own channel, and I look forward to seeing more of your content. Thank you so much!

Thank you very much for the rich content and the clear and helpful explanation. I was just looking for the meaning of corresponding squares and their use and how to determine them, felt it as a hard exercise, but your clarification made it much simpler. All the best, Mina

You are welcome! First time I encounter corresponding squares I was struck by its complexity. But later with time I understood it better and now it is not so difficult. Glad I could help!

I read a few articles, watched some videos, googled some and I did not find any clear explanation on HOW to calculate corresponding squares in general. After first 10 mins of your video I know everything I need. Thank you so much!

i was reading Dvoretsky Endgame manual (4th edition) and this position is in there, but i couldnt quite grasp the ideas behind it. Quick youtube search and here you are with the same position. Youve really helped clear a lot of things up and the rest of the 1st chapter regarding pawns just clicked so easy. I do still find it relatively hard to find the key squares though to then get onto the corresponding square part of the dilemma but i am sure that will come with practice. The 5th edition of the endgame manual does explain it a little better though and highlights particular squares more clearly, but i think that is down to watching your video initially that i can read it more clearly. Thanks for the video. well presented

Thank you so much for this video. I was reading a book about fundamental chess endings and didn't understand why the book let some square correspond to an other, but this video made it more clear to me. I found this puzzle to be pretty hard: White to move and win: W: Ka1, pd5, pe4 and pg3 B: Kg8, pd6, pd7 and pg4 Would you like to give this puzzle a try?
@stephenlafleur65515 жыл бұрын
At 10:17 you state: "If he (black) goes to f6, we go to h3". Why h3 when just go f4, as we have already established that they are coressponding squares?
@stephenlafleur65515 жыл бұрын
Well, as I look at it again, the point I guess is to reinforce the fact that that square too is apart of the corresponding web--so to speak.

I think the best book written about this subject is 'The final countdown' by Herman Claudius van Riemsdijk and Willem Diederik Hajenius. There also exist a Chessbase CD from this book. I wish someone could make some video tutorials explaining the methods described in this book.

How to find the key squares in the final positions? so that I can get corresponding squares from there. Great Video!
@LiceoVillaFontana19 ай бұрын
I studied this position when I was 12 from the maizelis book. Unfortunately, descriptive notation and Russian translation to Spanish made it difficult…but I loved it That was 1974!

Thanks for clarifying as I'm reading endgame book by Dvoretzky & found this quite difficult to comprehend. Also stockfish recommends Ke3 which I think it's much simpler.
@MykhayloOleksiyenko4 жыл бұрын
Ke3 Kg7 and you still need to go down and find corresponding squares. Actually Ke3 takes one move longer then Kf3 or Kg3!
@seanpagaduan70552 жыл бұрын
I tried to understand this in Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual, I tried to understand this through CJS Purdy's On the Endgame, I tried to understand this through Jesus de la Villa's 100 Endgames You Must Know. This video was the first time I felt I really understood the concept.

I am afraid I can not. If you are looking to improve your pawn endgames in general, then you can try solving pawn endgame puzzles at lichess
