Getting to Work on Our Fixer House in Noto, Sicily #3

Lots of exterior cleanup on our fixer house in Noto, Sicily. Then we took a break from bringing this old house back to life to join in the local olive harvest. A great couple of weeks here in Noto!

Pressure washing = INSTANT gratification!! I can relate to so much of this (as we work on our place in Castelvetrano). We have our own Maximo named Enzo. FANTASTIC neighbor and I don't know what I would do without him!! We haven't completely retired and moved here FT yet, but we're working on it. Thanks. And yes, that olive oil. I had to wait about two hours for our oil to be processed and I sat there in the mill the whole time just grinning from ear to ear. People thought I was crazy I’m sure 😂

So you bought a summer/country home in the country. In Sicily this type of home is called a Campagna - which translates to countryside. Many Sicilians also have a townhouse in one of the towns or cities on the island. Just be sure that you have excellent security systems in place with redundant communication systems. The criminals over there have it down to a science as far as breaking into these country houses where there are no witnesses. They will figure out how your systems work, cut all the cables to your house, block cellular communication, take out the satellite communications, etc... then they will take everything. Happens almost daily.

Point taken. Unfortunately, when they get into our 55 sq meter mansion they’ll be quite disappointed with our, let’s call it, “austere” living situation 😂 I’ll move our good tools and a few other “worth stealing” items to temp storage at our year round neighbor’s farm and that’ll be that.

Try a mixture of bleach, dishwashing soap, and water to pretreat the stains on the walls and porch.

I didn't film it, but I doused that wall with bleach and still it didn't really come off. But thats ok. We'll be painting it soon.

Your preassure washer is slow. Minimum is Kercher K3 ;) K2 is for car washing .. Bigger number faster washing

It’s actually a Lavor with a bar rating a little bit higher than the K3. You’re right and I probably should have bought something even more powerful (I had a really powerful gasoline powered one in the US) but… c’est la vie. I didn’t want to spend a fortune on something I wasn’t going to be using much 🤷‍♂️

Just curious did you look in the Avola town/area for property? I've noticed that there is a lot of affordable properties. Any thoughts on Avola? Thanks.

Yes. And I have LOTS of thoughts because I cant really wrap my head around the place - much like the rest of Sicily. Avola is a little run down, like lots of places on the island, but there's something underneath the surface which I just can't quite put my finger on. I love the ocean there. There's some good shops and restaurants. The people I've come into contact with have all been nice. Also a couple of food trucks on the coast selling paninis which get great reviews but I just haven't been able to get there in the evening yet. I have not been in the summer and I get the feeling that it booms there then. The rest of the time? I think it's pretty quiet. So... all in all not too touristic, nice beach and it feels very "real." It'd be a good place to find a fixer apartment for sure. Good luck!

You can try to spray the walls with bleach. Get 12 % chlorine from my a pool supply store. Mix at a ratio of 10 % chlorine, 90 % water. Apply with a pump spray. Leave for 20 minutes. Power wash and after apply the same mixture to prevent mold/lichen growth. Last about 2 years.

The show is interesting. It's actually nice to be in Sicily. But, your music is awful, just too rock and roll American. Rather hear Italian music, or at least something softer that goes with the countryside. It will keep me from watching, which is too bad. It looks like a wonderful place with wonderful neighbours. I wish you all the best with your new adventure.
