Getting Turned into an Old Man on Halloween | Goosebumps: The Haunted Mask II

I like that R.L. Stine preys on two fears: Doing something irreversible that you end up hating, and fear of being too old to enjoy life. The mask doesn't just make you 50, but like a 115 year old crypt keeper type, dry as a bone and hunched over. I also like that an evil mask gets to say "Bring me the head of" in a tween horror. Puns! Implied murder and decapitation! A mask that's using her head (for evil)!

As we've come to find out regarding the whole "rule of 3" pertaining to The Unloved (The Haunted Mask, The Old Man Mask, the wannabe Tor Johnston Mask, and their other genuine human skin counterparts), the Shopkeeper/Mask Maker/Creator of The Unloved stated in the original _Haunted Mask_ book that once one of The Unloved is worn 3 times, it becomes PERMANENTLY attached to your head & quite literally becomes your new face...FOREVER. Only a symbol of love can free you of The Unloved's control once it's melded into your skin instead of remaining a cursed "mask" (although, in reality, "It is NOT A MASK, it is A REAL FACE" as Colin Fox's Shopkeeper/Mask Maker told Carly Beth in the original _Haunted Mask_ TV episode). The thing is, Carly Beth Caldwell only technically wore The Haunted Mask 2 times originally (she wore it the first time to try it out & subsequently frighten her annoying little brother Noah before taking it off briefly at his urging, then she put it back on again for the second time to go trick or treating with bestie Sabrina Mason, who was dressed up as a homemade Catwoman -- this coming before The Haunted Mask's evilness caused Carly Beth's inner dark side to be unleashed, driving her to act radically out of character for the usually shy, timid middle school girl, as evidenced by her snarling at passerby, stealing candy from other children, genuinely smashing pumpkins gleefully or otherwise angrily throwing them at neighboring houses, getting a middle-aged mother so mad that she threatened to call the police [noticeably, after her elementary school age kid was understandably scared of Carly Beth wearing The Haunted Mask & when the mother tried to assure her frightened offspring that it was just a Halloween costume, Carly Beth leaned down to speak at the unnerved kiddo's level & audibly threatened the terrified child, prompting the little girl's mother to tell off Carly Beth for scaring her impressionable daughter since "she's just a little girl", only for Carly Beth to backtalk the mother herself too, warning her that "You'll get what's coming to you, too", thereby resulting in the mother threatening to call the authorities meanwhile Sabrina frantically tried to course correct for her unstable friend, saying, "She's not really like that", proving conclusively that, as Carly Beth herself would claim minutes later, "I'm sorry, I honestly don't know what came over me. It's not me, Sabrina, it's the mask. The mask made me do it."], and eventually, even throttling a startled Sabrina, which Carly Beth tries to laugh off as a harmless prank, although by now, Sabrina clearly suspects something is wrong with her best friend, but tries to go along with their Halloween fun nonetheless -- as well as get revenge upon school frenemies Chuck Greene & Steve Boswell), yet The Haunted Mask STILL fused into Carly Beth's skin to become her new face UNTIL she used the plaster of Paris sculpted bust of her head that her artiste mother had made (apparently, out of love for her daughter, for some strange reason) to frighten away the other Unloved that were pleading her to become one with them & subsequently remove The Haunted Mask...at least, for that particular Halloween night. The sad part kicks in when you read the sequel to the sequel (although, to an extent, the events of _The Haunted Mask II_ are partially retconned in _The Scream of The Haunted Mask_ since both stories are written to take place on the Halloween following the original _Haunted Mask_ incident), because if you still followed the "rule of 3" guideline pertaining to how many times you can wear one of The Unloved from the original story, since Carly Beth only wore The Haunted Mask TWICE originally, she was spared from becoming The Haunted Mask's PERMANENT victim for the rest of her life, but in _The Scream of The Haunted Mask_ she had to once again put on The Haunted Mask -- this now being the 3rd & FINAL time, mind you -- in order to fight evil against evil in order to combat a conniving ghost girl named Lauren Henry who had originally used The Haunted Mask when she was alive to cause a nearby stable farm's horses to stampede, subsequently scaring the poor creatures to death, but also inadvertently, trampling poor Lauren under the weight of their combined hooves, ultimately killing her as well. As an avid horse lover in her own right & naturally wanting to get as far away as possible from the siren call of The Haunted Mask stored in a box in her family's basement, Carly Beth & Sabrina both took up jobs assisting the stable farm's owner when they had invited the neighborhood children to visit & have a Halloween party on the premises. Lauren Henry, despite being deceased many years prior, was still able to show up in corporeal poltergeist form, effectively posing as a pale-skinned, fair-haired surrogate right hand helper for the stable's owner, despite somehow strangely knowing prematurely that Carly Beth had present ownership of The Haunted Mask & obviously, wanting it back for herself just so she could cause untold havoc once again. Things seemed quite tranquil until a vengeful Lauren had suddenly shifted from her faux human guise into a swirling, wailing ghostly vaper & started attempting to seize control over the easily frightened neighborhood children using ghostly possession that Carly Beth knew she had to fight fire with fire, so she ran back to her house, went into the basement, pulled out The Haunted Mask from its box, went back to the stable farm with it in hand & rather than hand The Haunted Mask back to Lauren despite the ghost's adamant insistence & verbal threats, she put on The Haunted Mask herself and exited the stable farmhouse to go into the clearly haunted ramshackle stable on the property with an enraged ethereal Lauren close behind. The haunted horses that had gotten themselves killed by Lauren scaring them with The Haunted Mask all those years ago did show up yet again (they had shown up before in the story as a flashback to Lauren's past when she was alive, along with the ensuing tragic aftermath that followed) & thankfully for our longstanding _Goosebumps_ heroine, rather than confuse her for their attacker & have Carly Beth also suffer Lauren's tragic fate, the carrots that Carly Beth had stashed in her pants pocket saved her, as the phantom horses surrounded a now scared Lauren, who then basically relived her demise all over again before she & the ghost horses vanished into the night. Curiously, when Carly Beth dug into her pants pocket, the carrots she had stored there were mysteriously gone, signifying that, thanks to her pre-established love of horses & the fact that most horses (apparently, either living or dead) tend to love carrots anyway, they served as a proxy SYMBOL OF LOVE, allowing her to be spared Lauren's fate AND thankfully, tug The Haunted Mask off her head, even though, by all accounts, it should stayed on & become her new FOREVER FACE, considering the "rule of 3" guideline.

I like it, but the original Haunted Mask will always be a masterpiece. I do like how the TV version is far different from the book version. In the book version, Steve is already feeling the I'll effects the first time he puts it on at home. He actually does go to Carly-Beth for help. The original Haunted Mask isn't the villain, and it ends when Steve and Carly Beth finds the matching costume of Steve's Mask. The Mask comes off Steve and attaches itself to the costume and...I kid you not...dances off to God knows where. And it ends when Chuck tries to scare Carly and Steve with a Mask, and discovers he can't get it off now. So I think the TV version is better lol.

I still remember watching these back in the day both of the haunted mask specials. I love how cheesy these are but there were times they can pull off some legit spooky atmosphere. Love the review Avery can't wait for the next one

I think the Haunted Mask 2 is meant to be a representation of kids being afraid of growing up, and that all entails. Feeling like you're too old to have fun, for Halloween, your life is passing you by.

If you want to see a Goosebumps episode where the main child characters actually get turned into old men, and get hit on by old ladies check out "An Old Story" it's definitely something. One of my favorite episodes is called Cry of the Cat. It's actually very good which is surprising considering the track record of Goosebumps episodes. The flying mask effect surprisingly isn't the worst effect they have done on the show.

So i never actually read or watched any Goosebumps related, i know it's popular, but i was more into Round The Twist man. NZ media isn't as easy to find compare to AUS media given how the list of them is small. Speaking of NZ, feels great to watch one on TV & streaming since like ever, i can think of a few like the Tribe (which that should get it's own vid in the future as with anything obscure). I still need to watch the original Skippy myself too on Dailymotion & Blinky Bill 90s era at some point. The Bureau of Magical Things S2 on YT that probably not gonna stay for very long because copyright, though you can find almost every Jonathan M. Shiff show on YT aside from a few.Also i was probably asleep when your new vid was uploaded & real sorry about that finger cut, i hate getting those.
