It's really cool to see your process! You actually inspired me to work with col-erase pencils for my initial sketch layers instead of regular 4H. That added bit of color really gives the sketch character. :)

Wonderful advice. I remembering thinking how i hated the "its who you know" bit. I was determined to make it on my talent and not someone else's name. It took years of working (and some humbling) to realize what your shared in this video. Well said sir. I love the three levels of connection that you shared. Thank you for emphasizing the importance of genuine connections. It is important to be aware of interactions and what make you feel great and/or skeezy. This will allow you can pass along genuine experiences to your connections.

I'm so happy that Instagram led me to your work and the SVS community. Although I'm only taking first steps down this path, you always give such sound advice. Although it may be a long road, you've laid out markers to help me know if I'm going in the right direction. Thanks so much, and keep doing the wonderful things you do!

I feel like one of the things that I look for when I need help is a proven work ethic. I know talented creatives who are just flakey when it comes to actually getting the work done. Creatives are rarely professional and professionals are rarely creative... I am glad to be one of your underling connections... I am truly inspired by your stuff.

Hey Jake! Really enjoying your videos. I'm in a bit of a rut artwise right now and your video on the creative bank account really helped. I realised I'd been taking too much from my creative bank account whilst not putting enough in there. Trying to switch the balance a bit now. I'd love to see a video on the tools you use if possible.

Loved the video and the advice, Jake. In the spectrum of work though, the most important points I could share are persistence and improvement. Bringing a potential employer one portfolio once may not get you the job. You should be taking as many opportunities to get your foot in the door as possible. I've heard every month is good to send a portfolio out if there's jobs to be filled. But the portfolios should show (the point you made) a) interest in the field work and resemble the work of those getting the jobs and b) a constant improvement from the last submission. Sending work that looks to be on the same exact skill level as the last one you send in isn't a good thing to have attribute to your work. Portfolios, at best, should be constantly improving to fit the criteria of the jobs there used for and continue to improve in terms of skill, ideas, presentation, ect. That's all I've got to speak on the topic though: hope it helps or at the least, gets people thinking over how they go about approaching the industry.

Mr00001jon Right, right! Always be improving your portfolio. You should be updating it at least every 6 months if you're actively looking for work.

Thanks so much for these videos Jake. This felt like a bit of reassurance for me. I recently applied for a storyboard position on Steven Universe. I know someone who works at the studio, but not very well. I believe my portfolio is catered to them. I have some comic examples and an animatic. Even if I dont get the job, I wont feel too bad about it. I do have some skills I need to hone. And Im not super well known in the community. But anyway. Thanks for the advice and I look forward to your next video.

Really awesome video. Im going to share this with my friends because I think it'll really help them out. The one problem i have, out of the 3 skills you talked about , is making connections with people. I feel my shy and awkward personality is preventing me from going out and talking to people offline ...like in school. Also I'm thinking of making a community for all my followers who are truly interested in my work ..but Im not sure which social media site would be a good platform for such a thing. I was thinking Google+ because it allows for people to have good conversations and share alot of different media.
@jakeparker449 жыл бұрын
Digital Art Rocks People skills ALWAYS come in handy. SO you should learn them, then master them. AS for social media sites...go with whatever you're comfortable with. But know that there's different people on different platforms, and the more you can engage on them, the better it is for the macro-community around your work.
@samasucreative9 жыл бұрын
I'll take time to research about people skills and practice them. Ya I was thinking of inviting some of my followers from across different social media sites , to one main social site where we can all engage, inspire, and teach each other. Thank you for taking time out of your day to respond to me . I really appreciate it .

Jake, I've seen a few of your character sketches and final drawings and it's without a doubt you've got a unique style. But I've noticed anime/manga flavour in some of your drawings. This creeps up on me too when I'm drawing without even noticing it. Basically my question is, what are your views on this style of drawing ? My art college in Dundee - Scotland, every tutor hates it and says it's boring, and lacks character etc. but in my opinion, those who can draw it well have an awesome skill. Just wondering what your views on it are :)
@jakeparker449 жыл бұрын
Robbie Goldie I love good anime/manga. You can learn a lot form that style. It's a style of extremes coupled with beautiful subtlety. Also, if you like something, you like it. Don't worry about what other people say, don't let them make you feel bad about it. Celebrate your guilty pleasures.
@rubbertoe42789 жыл бұрын
I'll take your word for it! Couldn't of described it better myself, if ever have a project which comes across slightly manga-ish, I'll put them in their place by quoting your words haha. Thanks again for inspiring us all man!

no one, not even artschools have the right to tell you what art style u choose. i think if they say it's boring it's because they can't reach that level of excellence and are jealous...

What do you think of the shifted X-wings in the new design? The old one had the top and bottom wings line up exactly, the new one has the lower one shifted forwards. Anyhow, I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. Just wondering if you think the design is 'risky' in how it seems almost out of balance?

Hey Jake, I am loving the videos. Do you have any tips for starting conversations with artists online or at conventions? I get the whole idea of being genuine, but at the same time I usually want another artist to know that I am an artist too, but I always feel like I sound like I'm just schmoozing. I realize there is no formula for making a connection, so guess I'm asking if you have any tips for what not to say.
@jakeparker449 жыл бұрын
Adam Sanford That's a good question... I think the best thing you could do in any conversation is talk more about the other person than about yourself. Ask them questions about what they do, how they got into that. What they're currently working on. Who influences them, how they manage everything they do...stuff like that. If they're cool, they will let the conversation naturally turn around to you and you'll get a turn to talk all about yourself. If they're not cool, it will just be ALL about them, and then get out of there asap because you don't want to be friends with them anyway.
@adamsanford13899 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jake! That really helps a lot. I feel like I'm just awful at starting conversations with any person I'm just meeting and doubly so with an artist whose work I admire. Thanks for taking the time to reply. Love your work man!

hello, I have a few questions... 1- what kind of "test" did you have to do when applying to the job ( what did it include)? 2- Are those markers worth the money? 3- How long do you estimate it should take to start and finish a comic/novel?

I know that this video is a bit older, I still love watching them all. :) This was my first Time watching this particular video, and I hadn't really seen all that many art errors before in any other videos, but I loved seeing that even you can make mistakes too. it kinda made me feel like I could make errors and it was ok. whereas before I would get mad at myself for not drawing as good as you. that's just because I am competitive and if I see someone drawing better I instantly have to be as good as them. XD anyway, good video! and I love your work! I am on instagram, pokeblast there too. thnx for the inspiration!
