Hi there. I am John Bond from Riverwinds Consulting, and this is Publishing Defined.
This is the fourth in a five-part video series on Getting Your Journal Article Published. This part is called, Submitting Your Manuscript & Getting a Decision.
You have your written and edited final draft of your manuscript. You have had a couple of colleagues give you feedback and made some changes. One final grammar check run? Ready to go.
Revisit your ranked list of journals you are considering submitting to. Consider whether the ranking still reflects your thoughts on the best match for your publication. When you have your top choice, take one more look at their Guidelines for Authors to make sure you comply to the letter.
Almost all journals have a sophisticated electronic manuscript submission system. You likely need to create an account, fill out some details on the authors and your work, and then start to upload your manuscript. Most systems will have specific formats and details for uploading. Again, follow them precisely. You will receive an email as a confirmation you have been successful.
Now, it is time to wait. It will take time and I usually suggest you focus on other research or start writing your next article.
But the time will come when you get an email with the decision. Let’s look at the most common ones:
-Reject without review. This means your manuscript either did not fit the requirements for format, length, etc. Or your content is not what they publish. If this happens, be more diligent with your future submissions.
-Reject: Nobel Prize winners have all had papers rejected Don’t let it get you discouraged. Read the comments they provided, if any, and learn from them. Improve the work if you can and the consider where you want to submit next.
-Revise: Likely the most decision you will receive. Review the comments and then let them sit. Come back to them and consider them again. Be open to their ideas. If you feel they fit with your vision of your work, consider making changes and either resubmitting to them or another publication. Strive to make your work as good as it can be. A decision of revise is a positive decision!
Accept: Congratulations! You did great work.
