Hi there. I am John Bond from Riverwinds Consulting, and this is Publishing Defined.
This is the first in a five-part video series on Getting Your Book Published. This part is called, Getting Started.
So, you have been thinking about writing a non-fiction book, textbook, or monograph for some time. Congratulations. You have taken the first step in the process that will allow you to share your expertise with interested readers and students of your field. The good news is the road to publication is a definable, process oriented one. I am happy to break the steps down for you in this video series.
First, start with a purpose. Understand why you want to write a book. Whether you are trying to educate your audience, create a better textbook for your course and other like it, publish your findings, or maybe you just want to make money and become famous; understanding your motivations can inform many decisions you will face.
Next is to define your idea or topic. This may seem unnecessary to you as you likely have a project in mind. Before you move forward, think through your areas of expertise, but also what really energizes you as a writer. When you have solidified your thoughts, move onto creating a title and one paragraph summary of your book. This may seem very early in the process, but this will make you commit to what the project is and isn’t. Remember, all these decisions you make now can always be revised or changed as you move through your project.
Your title needs to be short, memorable, and focus the reader’s attention as quickly as possible. Come up a list of possible terms or even exact titles and workshop them with friends. Remember to search for them at an online book retailer to ensure you understand how closely they compare to other books in your area.
For the description, you need to be able to summarize your book in a short elevator ride. Eventually you will expand your short summary into a full four paragraph description; think back cover of the book type of description.
Next you will create a tentative table of contents. Think through the natural progression of what you want to cover. Think about not only what is covered, but also what will not be included in the book. Is it better to have 25 ten-page chapters or ten 25-page chapters?
While you are going through these steps, think about who your ideal reader (or customer) is. Come up with a specific profile of the person or people. This will allow you to focus on your intended market when key content decisions are to be made.
Finally, decide who will be writing your book. Seem like an obvious answer? Some people write the entire work themselves. Others have co-authors. Still others get several people to contribute chapters (chosen by you) and serve more as an editor for the book. All three models have pluses and minuses, so consider them carefully.
