Hi there. I am John Bond from Riverwinds Consulting, and this is Publishing Defined.
This is the second in a five-part video series on Getting Your Journal Article Published. This part is called, Choosing Journals for Submission.
As you start to think about where you might submit your article, keep a running list of publications that are under consideration. This will help you prioritize which journals are the best fit and, of those, your top journal.
There are over 30,000 academic journals in the world, but in your area, it will be an extremely focused group. Peer-reviewed journal publishing is dominated by large publishers and learned societies. The distribution models of journals vary. Some may be association benefits, only sent out to members. The access to their content is restricted. Another model is subscription, this content is restricted to subscribers. Another model is open access. This is when the content is freely available to anyone with online access. There are usually no restrictions on reuse of the material, with proper citation. Authors of these publications pay for this wide distribution. They pay an article processing charge or APC. Be mindful of open access journals that you will need to be responsible for this fee.
All of these publications will be peer reviewed by experts in your field. The reviewers will help determine if your article will be accepted, rejected, or sent back for revision.
As you review journals you might want to consider, make sure you read articles they have published to better understand the publication. Be a fan of any journal you submit your work to! When you are considering a journal, consider the formats of articles they have published. Whether it is original research, review articles, case reports, theory articles, or others, you will want to have your manuscript format align with that journal before you submit to it.
All journals offer a document called Guidelines for Authors or Information for Authors. It can be found at the journal’s website. Find these documents for journals you are considering and study them carefully. They give the inside scoop about what content the journal is looking for.
As you start to develop the list, you will want to refer to each journal’s website. Most journals will have a page that lists information about the publication. This page will give valuable information about the aims and scope for the journal and relevant details such as impact factor, audience, frequency, time to publication, and many others. Read these pages carefully to understand more about each publication.
The aims and scope, mission statement, and/or vision statement for the journal are of high interest when you are trying to winnow down a long list. These valuable statements give insight into what editors and editorial boards are looking for from the manuscripts they are considering. Read these closely to try to best match your manuscript and content to the interests of a publication.
Metrics about a journal are important. Impact factor and others let a writer know the potential reach for their article. Emerging metrics such as altmetrics give additional insight.
Some journals list their rejection or acceptance rate, which is valuable for knowing how selective they are. Others list their time from submission to decision, while others list the time from acceptance to publication, both critical timeframes.
Chart the key factors for you. Some journals will move up and others down your list. Later you can finalize your top publication for manuscript submission.
Well, that’s it. I am a Publishing Consultant and work with authors, associations, and publishers. Reach out to me at PublishingFundamentals.com.

Afternoon from the UK John, I love the London Underground items on your bookshelves in the background. A quick query for you please. I've picked up the Kindle/Digital version of your book "The Little Guide to Getting Your Journal Article Published Simple Steps to Success", to help guide me in my initial forays into academic publishing. I'm interested in taking advantage of some of the digital templates mention but I can't find a link to them? The Roman Littlefield publication site doesn't have an embedded link. I appreciate I could recreate the spreadsheet in the appendices, but I feel more comfortable asking the original template you've created, so that I avoid baking any bad practices into my work from the outset. Any guidance you can provide will be most appreciated. Best Steve
