You should have been an engineer! You are amazing at making chores work for you in what looks like a basically unmodified home. (Other than the lifts) Maybe one day you can show us more of your home and how it works so well for you. You plan things so well. And your manoeuvring at the top of the stairs with the rectangular basket was just amazing for a T6 para! One thing - where are the controls for your stairlift?

Love these real life hacks! Good work!The year I lost my leg I spent some time at home alone before I got a prosthesis to walk on. It was a townhouse with four sets of stairs so I had to use crutches instead of a wheelchair. Laundry day was interesting because my bedroom was at the top and the machines were in the basement. I used a laundry bag that I found at the dollar store to move the laundry. It’s just a sack with a drawstring so I was able to hang onto the string while using the crutches and just bump the bag behind me. Exhausting, but I got the job done. I also decided it was okay to start wearing my jeans for a few days in a row. Lol.

Man, my heart was in my throat when you were bringing up basket #3 - I was worried you’d fall down the stairs! We are re-watching this video to have a closer look at the stair-lift because 2 friends are considering installing a stair-lift due to health issues and want me to give some advice. I’ve talked about you to them many times, so they knew I’d get info. Does your lift attach only to the steps, not the wall?

Yes only to the steps

What about a laundry chute that emptied onto something counter height and a dumb waiter to bring things back up?

On the someday/maybe list lol!

You are an amazing woman and I feel kinda guilty criticizing you! But you did ask for suggestions and I did notice that your system seem less than efficient. (Honestly if it was me, I would solve most of this with, "Hey Jacob, before you go to school bring the laundry down stairs for mom." and later, "Hey, the laundry is downstairs and folded --- bring it upstairs". But you seem to be determined to do it entirely solo so here is my suggestion) Rather than taking multiple trips down the stairs to get all the laundry down, then doing all the laundry, then multiple trips to bring all the laundry up at the very end, I would instead..... Sort the laundry while still upstairs, bring one basket down, load the washer. Leave the rest of the laundry upstairs until it time for the second load. (This will have the added benefit of serving as a visual reminder you are doing laundry) Then bring the second load down, transfer from washer to dryer and load second load of clothes. Then on your third trip down bring the final basket. When you empty the drier bring that load upstairs on your way up rather than wait for all of the clothes to be done. This should cut down in the number of trips up and down the stairs in about half. And is similar to the method I use even though for me walking up and downstairs is not problem.

My current strategy is definitely making Jacob do the laundry lol. You're suggestions are great! I definitely forget that I'm doing laundry if I take it all downstairs 😩 at once.

Brittany does your feet ever get caught on a step and cause you to fall off the lift ?
@EmpoweredPara2 жыл бұрын
They sometimes get caught but they don't ever pull me off. They just kinda bump down each step. But most of the time I make sure they are clearing the steps and don't drag. There is a foot rest on the lift that I should use but I'm just too lazy to remember to put it down

Laundry shoots are not very common anymore but may be very helpful for you.

Easiest way for you to do laundry would be get a 1 level house with wide interior doors....

Really lol? I wish I'd thought of that haha. kidding. I wish I had a one level house
@charles88012 жыл бұрын
Ok Brittany this looks like you are doing 3x's the effort. To bad your husband couldn't build a dumb waiter shaft system. Put the baskets in it. Go downstairs send it down to wash it & send it up when you are done?!?
