I was born in Richmond in 1968. We lived in Burnley, the affluent part of Richmond, right next to Toorak near the Yarra. I wouldn't change my childhood for anything. Us kids in the 70s & 80s always had fun, Saturday nights would be spent knick knocking and running or Spotlighting into neighbours windows, Playing with spud guns, fireworks, billy carts. In Richmond in the 1970s we regulary visited the local fish shops and played pinball or video games. We went to Burnley Primary School at Madden Grv and Yarra Boulevard. Back in the 70s was a dark time at Primary school as the Teachers/Principal still administered the strap up until around 1976. We were forced to drink plain milk from small glass bottles with foil tops. Richmond had many cultures back then, Vietnamese, Greek, Italian, Yugoslav, Hungarian, German, Maltese, Turkish, Etc. Everyone got along. Some kids would sell newspapers in the station subways after school. We're lucky to have had some famous people who were born or grew up in Richmond, Edwin Flack, James Scullin, Squizzy Taylor, Dame Nellie Melba, Helen Reddy. I'm extremely proud to be a Richmondite, even though I live in Adelaide. 🥂❤

I lived in Richmond in the 1980’s - i wouldn’t have ever considered the Burnley end of Richmond the more affluent end of town - the place was always full of “effluent”, and I am actually “one of those people” who was grieviously injured in the fallout from the appointment of the Administrative Commisioner for the area, when all the crap went down in the State and Local Labor Parties - the thing about “truth in history” is that it isn’t any bloody different to “truth” in real estate - it’s always reflecting with “rose coloured glasses” and half truths!

I lived in Ross St Richmond until the house was pulled down to make way for the housing commission in the late 1960s. Went to Vaucluse in the 70s and worked after school in Bridge rd Coles after school. My parents were friends with Dan Daley who ran the pub in Church Rd. Everyone was so friendly.

From Wiki - Alexander George Gillon AM OBE (23 December 1909 - 25 August 2007) was a civic and sporting administrator in Melbourne, Australia. He was most notable as the longest-serving president of the Victorian Football Association, and as a mayor of the City of Brunswick...... Awesome stuff

@@tmnl8037 Oh ok. I don't temember Look and Listen. I did visit a record shop called Melb Music Exchange on Swan Street near Lennox st in 2008 whilst living back in Melbourne. I remember a dental practice in one of the streets off Swan street, north of swan street. I went there as a kid in the 70s and they still had old fashioned equipment. The place I really miss is an old cafe on Church street between Ball's and East Richmond station which existed in the 70s and first half of the 80s. They had the old fashioned Coke/Pepsi fridges and I'd go there with Mum and always get a Pepsi in a glass bottle and a cake or ham and cheese toasted sandwich. Also there used to be a very small Bicycle shop in Church street on a corner close to the station My father bought me a green dragster bike there in the 1970s. That old bloke was great.

I'm from Burnley and I don't ever remember Richmond being refered to as The Bronx. I've heard Werribee/Hoppers Crossing being called the Bronx in the 80s. There were far worse suburbs in the 70s & 80s than Richmond like Collingwood, Fitzroy, Sunshine, St Albans, Altona, Broadmeadows, Brunswick, Northcote, Reservoir, Footscray, Yarraville, etc

I used to go to Richmond quite afew times in the mid to late 1980's...It was the go to area for me when folks didn't want to waste to much money unlike the city. There were quite nice shops there which I won't bore the en' masses here which are probably are all virtually gone now. None stuck more than Dimmys which I thought had passed on but are now semi back but in a much more smaller guise which is better nothing I guess. Not a really big fan of the current Dimmys Coles-like supermarket but oh well....

Yeah I used to go to Dimmeys with my Mum in the 70s/early 80s when we lived in Burnley. My favourite store was Balls on the corner on Swan & Chapel Sts, they have these cable driven money cannisters used to move cash around the store, used to love watching them zip around.
