The other night I had a dwarf create an artifact crown just as my fort moved up to a barony. I put in a display case in my tavern. Within the year it was stolen. I've not used the justice menu much in my several years with dwarf fortress but I started investigating. I even checked the inventory of everyone in the area. My very first cold case!

@@rDunfee That's a strange one, who knows, it may not have even been taken by a Dwarf, it may well have been some sneaky Kabold. One of the most villainous Dwarfs I had, became infatuated with a woman. After years of pestering her, she eventually fell in love and settled down with someone else. In vengeance for this, the psycho dwarf tried to frame her for treason. When that didn't work, and he realised he was likely going to be banished, he stole a ring made from Jade and attempted to run for it. He made it about 100 yards away from my fortress before a stray Hydra ripped him to shreds and devoured both him and the ring. I cant help but feel he deserved that.

Magic isn't in the game yet (well, there are necromancers that raise undead etc but nothing player controllable) so a true ring of power isn't possible. But adding procedurally generated magic systems is on the roadmap so someday magic artifacts should be possible!

I would like to see a guide for cleaning. I assigned some dwarfs with cleaning but I still see bloodstaines outside, near my ranch. Maybe I just have to wait some longer? A guide for mechanism, like connecting bridges to one lever. While the lever is below ground in the base and bridges on the surface. Can dwarfs shoot behind their safety shooting walls to higher and lower layers (as long as they got sight)? I have to setup a little defense fort for birds, cos they are attacking dwarfs and animals. And how to guide water from a river to my base. And I read there are foes that can use that to swim into my base? Is there a way to prevent that? And is there a reason not to search for magma early on to use it as fuel for smithing and so on?

Was struggling a lot with a possessed woodcutter. He asked for cut gems, rough gems and Bone. All fairly easy to get on a standard fort. But he wouldn't start his craft. I knew neither gems, bone or rough gems are specific. He'll get wathever he finds in those categories. ATM I didn't have any cut gems, but that's easy enough to solve, my gem cutter just took his sweet time praying, eating, socializing, praying again, drinking, sleeping... Ok so I replace the cutter. Didn't work. Maybe something changed and he needs Large gems? Didn't work. Wooden large gems? No. Glass? I made some and bought some off of the traders of all 3 types. No deal. Is my refuse pile unforbiden? Yes it is. Does it have non-sapient creature bones in it? It does! So WTF is going on? I though it was a glitch, so I allowed myself to savescum. So what I just realized, after reading the wiki on bones. Since my fort is well fed by fisherdorfs, I'm growing out my herds and all the hunters and trappers are being trained in marksdwarfship for war, mostly to avoid the notifications, the only bone piles around are of dead invaders and a single yak that I forgot to pen and starved to death early in my fort's history. Your dorfs will not use bones from tame creatures that died by any other means than butchering. Simple as.

a peasant i recently recruted enter in strange mood, he goes nuts because some fancy material was falty, he coudn't end his project and become crazy as a loon. hes squadmates now complain the guy come back a little roughier in training, the militia captain is happy because now it haves a berseker... well... fun stuff it regulates itself

Didn't mention Macabre mood: Similar to Fell mood but instead "acquiring" a dead dwarf they will desire a dead animal instead.

I'm confused. My dwarf has everything he's talking about except rough gems. So i quickly mined some gems and they are sitting uncut in my stockpile but they are still murmuring about rough gems? Is there a way to make them recognize that we now have what they want?

My dwarf is possessed by unknown forces, but he is standing inside a workshop and muttering needs. Will other dwarfs hear him and haul items to the workshop? Should I do something to make them to haul?

One of my dwarves is in a strange mood, asking for rock, cut gems, and plant cloth. We have all three, but no one is bringing them the plant cloth they need, or they're not getting it themselves. I don't understand I don't want to lose this particular dwarf, what am I doing wrong? We have cotton, kenaf, rope weed cloth, etc.

Check the dwarf's preferences on his character pane. Sometimes a moody dwarf will want an item he specifically likes, which will be listed there. ...they aren't always easy to get ahold of, but it can still help at least to know

I started a new embark and early on a dwarf was in a strange mood. They wanted silk and i didnt have any and couldnt get any so they ended up going crazy, killed a bunch of dogs before my military commander killed him with a practice sword...

At the start of the video, the green button at the top right of the Dwarf's UI, when pressed follows the dwarf. in this case it's already green as Blind is already following said dwarf

Strange moods happen randomly - nothing to trace here. It's a complex and varied set of systems, but not everything has a cause.

Ok, I just had a dwarf go berserk. Legendary miner and he never claimed a workshop. He just retreated from society. He did chill in my mining guildhall. It said he was oddly secretive. I didn't see anything to say what he needed... Any advice?

See this happen check their highest skill and make that workshop. They're looking for something that you don't currently have.

Yeah I've had this happen the first time someone went into Strange Mood. I didn't know he required materials so he went insane and took all his clothes off and then died due to malnutrition. If they go insane they always die I believe.

I have been struggling to get bone (I have none) so every time they have a strange mood and need bone they eventually just die of thirst as I try over and over to butcher an animal with no luck… what are these lambs for if I can’t slaughter them???

@@PrettyGarboyou have to set them up for slaughter in the labour menu- pet/live stock. There should be a knife icon (can’t remember if that’s right) . You have to pick specific ones to be set up for slaughter

In dwarf fortress ores have real world names. Many ores contain iron, but hematite is pure.

I think it's exciting: an occasional race against the clock to save your dwarf from insanity, and if you succeed, you also get an awesome artifact as reward.

It's part of the grasslands ambient sound, it's super annoying and there's a mod on the workshop that edits it out

You accept they're death. To prevent in future good practice is to trade for the various materials your tile will not have if you can afford it

You can save the game and try to figure out a way to get it before they go beserk. In one case, I needed bone and slaughtered an animal for bone. However, if there's nothing to be done, I suggest getting an armed squad nearby to limit the inevitable carnage.
