I do kinda disagree with Matt’s method of Crits. In my party we roll the damage die twice on crit, doubling the potential damage, rather than the actual damage. My DM is considering taking a medium between the two, roll your damage die once, and then add the maximum that dice can do in addition. So if your damage die is a d10, you get 10 damage + whatever you rolled

This made me curious. So, I decided to do some research/math, and I think I’ve calculated the most single-target damage you could do in a single turn. This is assuming you don’t have time for glyphs because otherwise, your damage could scale infinitely, as long as you had money. I’m also not counting spells like “Wish” or “Polymorph” because (Despite potentially doing an infinite amount of it) you don’t actually roll damage dice. First, you must have 17 levels in wizard and 2 levels in fighter. Assuming you know where the enemy will be in a minute (or you do some stealth shenanigans) cast “Otiluke’s Freezing Sphere” with your 6th level spell slot and set it on the ground. That will go off in a minute, so in the next 6 seconds cast “Delayed Blast Fireball” with your 7th level spell slot. That will go off the turn after the Sphere or when you choose to stop concentrating on it. Then back up to a safe distance. At this point just wait and time the attack to happen on the turn that the sphere goes off. The first thing that happens on this turn is “Otiluke’s Freezing Sphere” detonates for 10d6 cold damage. Next, you stop concentrating on “Delayed Blast Fireball” which detonates for 21d6 fire damage. Next cast “Meteor Swarm” using your 9th level spell slot for 20d6 fire and 20d6 bludgeoning damage. Lastly action surge and cast “Disintegrate” at 8th level for 16d6+40 force damage. This puts your max damage at 562, and your minimum at 63 damage. If you run into something with fire immunity swap out “Meteor Swarm” with a 9th level “Disintegrate”, and “Delayed Blast Fireball” with “Crown of Stars”. That will lower your max damage to 398 and your minimum to 62 damage. On the other hand, if you want to make the most attack rolls possible in one turn you need 17 levels in sorcerer, 2 levels in fighter, and access to “Eldritch Blast” through feats or a warlock level. From here its pretty simple. Cast “Scorching Ray” at 9th level, action surge and cast it again at 8th level, and then quicken spell cast “Eldritch Blast”. That’s 23 attack rolls in one round, 46 if you have advantage. The max damage for this is 268 with a minimum of 0 if you miss on all of them. While I can’t recommend the meta gaming needed to set this up, if you do end up able to do either of these, have fun rolling 80 some odd dice.

There is no " but still " Bc of the vast difference in levels, the Mighty 9 wouldn't stand a chance in the slightest. Caleb would do the most damage in the first round if he wasnt immediately killed, Nott second bc of sneak attack and would survive from hiding if she rolled high enough, Beau would get rekted trying to punch the Goliath, Yasha would eat shit entirely trying to fight the gunslinger, Jester and Cad would be too busy trying to heal to actively do anything useful and would end up burning out of spells before dying, and Fjord could likely escape if he put all his effort into teleporting away and disgusing himself.

This becomes far more impressive to think about when you realize he executed the entire stream of actions, including moving, shooting 4 or 5 times with an old fashion rifle (at most a lever action or bolt action) hitting every time, reloading, and ducking back down to hide, over the course of six seconds, the official time it takes for one round of combat. To summarize, he dealt enough damage to kill 62 commoners, 2 stone giants, or an adult gold dragon in all of six seconds. Now consider he should have done more damage this turn since he wasn’t adding his dex modifier to the first few attacks.

Trip Atomz -Action surge is basically fighter bullet time, you push your body to the limit of speed. At level 20, Percy is basically an inhuman blur of movement, hands flying faster than the winds of Pandemonium. That puny godling never stood a chance.

It's even more primitive than a lever or bolt-action weapon. Bad News seems to be a wheellock breech-loading rifle, technology from the Musketeer Era (1600s). They take a lot of effort to load, and require such precision machining that historically they tended to be made by watchmakers (which shows just how good a craftsman and designer Percy is). There is at least one real-life gun of this type that I know of, BTW. Look up a video called "Beautiful 1625 Breechloading Wheellock" and it'll take you to a Rock Island Auction House video showcasing it. It's a real-life period weapon, and it's eerily similar to descriptions I've read of Bad News.

Level 20 fighters with the right feats can deal some insane damage. Hell I ran a campaign with a 10 bard/10 fighter(arcane archer) mix armed with a hand crossbow who was just insane. He could do Grog levels of damage from the back field.

A fighter with either -5 +10 dmg feat can get 80-100 damage from that alone, 8x to 10x their dice (that can crit) and 8 to 10 times their damage modifier/magic bonuses (5+)
