Only addendum you should add is that Bowazon's get hit even worse on life leech (not sure about Javazon's). Otherwise great video. Didn't know about the 3rd category for life leech. I knew about skelly's and physically immune only because I died a lot to both "back in the day" or had no spell points after WW through them with my Barbarian.

Yeah 0 drain effectiveness is a B, but life tap still works

One thing that you didn't mention is that not only are there those difficulty penalties, but ALSO monsters get an innate physical resistance. So with 100% life steal, and 1000 damage in normal, you would leech 1000 hp per hit. Nightmare is 50% of your life steal, but monsters have +25% physical resistance. So its really 50% of 750 damage. So we go from 1000 life stolen, to 375. Hell mode is 33.3%, but monsters have a +50% resistance. So its really 33.3% of 500 damage. Now we have gone from the 1000 life per hit, to ~170, or half of nightmares already significant drop. A good rule of thumb is whatever you got in normal is gonna be 33% in NM, and 17% in hell. Of course, this does change based upon the monster, because some monsters have an innate physical resistance. This is why the specters in arcane sanctuary and the like become phys immune in hell. They already had a 50% resistance in normal.

Yes shockwave, tornado, twister, and warcry which are physical damage spells do not life steal or work with lifetap

I have few questions 1) Should we count the max physical damage or in between of max-min which would be more pathetic :p You counted your max physical damage in this video which is 1650 2) Can same calculation be applied for mana leech? 3) Is that drain effectiveness for both life and mana leech?

#1 Average would probably be better I just chose max for ease of calculations, you could also do a separate calculation for min and max, and then have a range. #2 yes for the most part they are identical #3 yes

That’s why I don’t rely on LL unless I’m running a javazon. It’s lifetap at the end game or nothing….

Life tap can fail you too imo. A Necro can easily overwrite the curse and get you killed, multiple pieces of gear have curse procs, many people prefer amp damage. In the end relying solely on life tap can get you killed unless you are solo. I like to have a decent amount of life leech and life tap 😂

So does Life Leech work on Druid Tornadoes being they are physical?

I tested this earlier just to be sure and the answer is no. Because tornadoes are a spell and not an actual attack it doesn't work. I believe druid spells are the one exception to this rule. Druid Has quite a few of the druid spells that are physical damage but are not considered attacks.

Didn't know leech was shown as incorrect and halved. Just another thing about this game that irks me. Why not just put the damn value rather than secretly halfing? Thank goodness some games that came a decade later got it right.

It's not shown incorrectly it has penalties for harder difficulty settings. They also setup monsters that had various resistance to leeching life from them. Skeletons are a big for instance with 0% leech.

Hmmm as far as I know physical skill damage that doesn't work with life leech like smite does work with life tap. Could be interesting to test. But now that you mention it tornados on druid are also physical damage. Hmmm 🤔

When I was introduced to Diablo 2 this fall my first idea was: put 6 amn runes in phase blade to get 42% life leech! Why nobody even mentioned this option in guides. Then I found theamasonbasin articles with explanation of those penalties...

So running a Vampires gaze on my Merc in Hell is kind of a waste then because he's only getting 33% of 7% life steal?

It is far less than you think yes, but that doesn't meant it won't help him. It's just important to remember that for instance vs skeletons he gets no life steal. Once you start to realize that certain monsters are very difficult to steal life from you will start to understand why your merc is dying in those scenarios. Thankfully Mercs tend to be 100% physical damage which means they end up with more life leech then for instance my Vengeance paladin.

That's why your merc should inflict a lot of damage in order to be able to heal himself in Hell. Anyway, if your merc doesn't have any life leech he would die for sure. Even 2% effective leech for 10K dps merc gives him 200 life restore per second.

How much LIFE leach do we need for Hell? Because ATM I only have life leach of 22 😢

22% is usually plenty as long as you are a physical damage class. Because Physical damage is the only damage calculated for Life Leech you need a fair bit of it to make it work. Say for instance I was a Holy Freeze Paladin, most of my damage would be cold not physical but I would have a small amount of physical damage. This means I would need more life leech than a physical character to utilize my rather small Physical damage pool.

I don't think life leech even works in pvp, or rather it's highly nerfed. It goes through the PvP penalty twice and comes out with basically nothing left. I always thought pvp was done in normal to make resistance easier to cap out.
