GH7 VS GH5 Image quality test!

In this video, I'm going to compare the Image quality of the GH7 with the GH5. To see which camera has the better image quality or the better colors just out of camera when shooting in a Standard picture profile. I must say that I prefer the image coming straight out of camera of the GH5 when shooting in the Standard picture profile but the colors were easy to match with the GH7. And finally I even preferred the GH7 look over the GH5 because there were more details on the GH7 when cropped in in the image! I believe there are a lot more picture profiles in the GH7 that I would prefer over the Standard. Like the Cine D2 or V-Log. Stay tuned for more GH7 vs GH5 tests coming soon!

Hello. The GH5's image looks more cinematic so I guess the GH7 will take better photos. I have GH5 and S1 equipment and what I see wrong with the GH5 apart from the focus is the magenta tint, but hey, nothing that can't be solved. Greetings from Spain.

Whenever I see images from the GH7, I notice how much more pronounced the speculars and highlights are, especially in the skintones. This adds a lot of dimensionality but also washes out some of the saturation, not in a bad way either. I tended find Lumix colors a bit too dense for my taste, so I think this is a great progression for their color science. I saw this evolution going from a GH5s to a GH6 and it looks like the GH7 is in line with this trajectory. I definitely hear you though; there was some magic in the old color science. I live in Natural profile on the GH5s and go cineD if I want an even more neutral image. The vlog on GH6 is far superior to GH5s vlog though. You made great use of GH5 vlog, so I expect you are going to love GH7 vlog. Glad you are enjoying the camera. Wishing you and your channel the best and looking forward to seeing more :)

Thank you for this video. I was waiting for a comparison with standard and cine d like this. Its been difficult to find a good replacement for the gh5 because that thing just nailed stabilization and color science. I guess I will continue looking or give a gh6 a go in the meantime. Thanks a lot!

@@CameraNewsDeals thank you very much for the kind words! If you don’t need the new autofocus system, than you’re good to go with the GH6. But if you care to shoot in V-Log on the other hand, I’ve found the GH7 to have great colors compared to the V-Log L on the GH5. For me the autofocus was the most important thing so I’ve really been waiting for 7 years until Lumix lunched a GH series of camera with reliable autofocus

Totally agree, please do more videos and comparisons, as I’m using Gh5ii, which by colors should be identical with gh5, specially in v-log profile, as I shoot last year’s just in it, where can push more in colors with best dynamic range. Will be good if the image will be similar, without color grading, so can use one camera as A and second one as B.

For a more filmic look, and for smooth skin tones, the gh5 is my preference here. For ENG or sports the GH7 wins hands down.

It's because 0 noise reduction has been used on this test. If you use --5, the GH5 has more details than the GH7 but more noise.

@@marinrealestatephotography Hello and thank you for the props! Yes the GH6 has the same dynamic range when shooting above ISO 2000! There is when the dynamic range boost of the GH6 turns on. But the GH7 has always Dynamic Range boost turned on, no matter what ISO you’re in.. The time when Dynamic Range boost turns out on the GH7 is when shooting in 120p Slow motion..

I'm trust your opinion. I think it's time for me to upgrade from GH5 but waiting for final decision to compare with G9ii. But now I can't see any model of GH7 for test on my local camera store even G9II. Only pre-order and wait for few months to get it. (I don't like about this marketing style It's look like they give the first priority to camera influencers for review the product.) I've test G9II only once at camera exhibition last year. 🥺🥺🥺

The GH7 is a G9ii with a GH6 body and a fan, prores raw, 32 bits float compatible adapter, Arri log C3 available upgrade. It's basically that. The color science is the same

Very interesting, I thought the GH7 had the same detail rendering than the G9II. When I compare both my G9II to my GH5 in C4K, I can see more fine details on the GH5, but more sharpening on the G9II when both are set at -5 sharpening, maybe because I shoot everytime with -5 noise reduction. On your test, the GH5 defintely looks softer even about resolution/fine details. Maybe you could try to test the GH5 with sharpness 0 or noise reduction to -5, I think the GH7 uses a bit more sharpening at -5 than the GH5 because I can see only very small differences between -5 to 0 sharpness on my G9II, however I see a big difference between -5 to 0 on my GH5. Most of the time, I can see more apparent details at 0 sharpness/ -5 noise reduction on my GH5 than on my G9II, adding more sharpening in post on the G9II just make some details oversharpened but never bring back some details I can see on my GH5.

@@kenslyder Oh yes, the GH5 shows much more noise ! Even the GH6 shows less noise than the GH5. In photo they are very similar if you don't underexpose, but in video the difference is really huge. I think it's because since the GH6 Panasonic uses some processing (while still retaining good details) to lower noise. It is why I sometime have the impression the fine details are slightly lower than on the GH5 (when using -5/-5 NR/sharpness). I think you should try 5,7K, you will get more noise but the fine details are nicer than in C4K in my opinion.

I think we're at a point where image quality is at a plateau. You buy new cameras for the tools and features these days. The image quality for any mid to high end consumer camera made in the past 10 years is going to be great on all of them as long as the user is competent enough.

@@TimODell7 Thanks Tim! I use Sigma lenses with a M43 mount and it works gorgeous! But of what I’ve seen on youtube, there is someone who tested it with speedbooster and it wasn’t working as good as an original m43 mount. He meant that maybe the speedbooster is going to get a firmware update soon to make it work but I don’t know because I don’t use speedboosters 😕

Seems the different looks have something to do with the Phase detect or just the new sensor. All the cameras from G9II and S5II have the same colour rendition. And from GH6 downwards have the same colours. It also seems to be what's contributing to the sharpness, because the GH6 has almost, if not the same resolution as per sensor as the GH7, but it still has a soft look like the GH5 too.

Never use noise reduction on the og GH5 (0), It smears details and absolutely destroys the chroma channels like a pig. If you disable it (-5), it will shows more details than the GH7 but more noise. I received my GH7 and image quality is the same than GH6.

For a fair comparison I wanted to set it up at 0 on both cameras but the sharpness at -5 to get the digital sharpening effect out of the image as good as possible.. You have much more flexibility with the GH7 because you can make LUT and load them into custom profile. Increase the master pedestal helps a lot to make the image cinematic (I set +15 on my G9ii. The black are too crushed by default)

@@sebastienblanchetiere1323 yes this is true. But you can’t change the Masterpedestal level in V-Log. V-Log it’s already flat and the blacks are already lifted. But it makes a lot of sense using it when shooting in different picture profiles. You’re right 🙂

I think its little bit annoying, that the standard profile doesnt look as good as on gh5, i mean in terms of colors, but for real tho, the gh7 looks much more detailed, and i think i will buy it aswell, cause it has so many game changing features, i mean like apple prores, thats insanity, i guess if you shoot in prores, the digital sharpness aswell as the internal noise reduction will completiely turn of in prores mode, like how it is on sony cameras with atomos ninja external recorded prores footage, like if you record prores with atomos ninja externaly on sony camera the image comes out is like no noise reduction and digital sharpness, its completitely raw, how i said i guess its the same on gh7 with internal prores than it will look even more cinematic i guess, another crazy thing is, you have cfexpress type b card slot, aswell as external ssd option, thats absolutely game changing. I saw a video on youtube, where someone took the gh7 prores footage, and just changed the iso in the cutting software, i dont know if its possible only on photos, but that looked like it was a video where he just changed the iso afterwards, thats a freakin red camera feature, bro if this is possible, its just the perfect camera, it has it all, expect maybe some color difference, but the advantages this camera brings far outweigh these small problems in my opinion. I would really like to see if you test the prores feature, and show us if this works with changing iso afterwards.

@@Unbekannt42424 Very well explained! After one month with the GH7 I can clearly say now that this camera is worth every penny! Changing the ISO in post it’s possible with the GH7 only if you shoot in Apple Prores RAW. About the digital sharpening; if you shoot in V Log with the GH7, you already get reed of the digital look that those other picture profiles have. i still have to test if shooting in Prores does make the image even better. Actually I’m recording on a simple SD card and I suggest you to watch my latest videos of the GH7 where they have all been recorded in V-Log and you’ll see how much better the image already looks :) cheers

@@kenslyder i can recommend the OWC 512GB Atlas Pro CFexpress 4.0 Type B card, it is Red camera proofed, you can find this for about 220 dollars, depends on your location, but its a good investment, or even better is building your own ssd, with the samsung 990 pro and an ssd case, Don't Buy an External SSD, Build One! from youtuber Jerad Hill Tech, explained it very well how to do that, i will look in to your latest video, and you mean the Prores internal can change iso in post? Or with external recorder Prores?

you can change ISO in post when you record in ProRes RAW internal on the GH7. But you also have the option to shoot in ProRes (internal) without RAW but then you can't change the ISO in post. Only if you shoot RAW

Please do low light tests! I've had problems with reds in my GH5. In low light situations, my reds look more orange. I was filming at night on Times Square. The Coca-Cola red color did not look good. Everything else was accurate. I had it on AWB.

Battery life - they essentially have the same battery as each other and hybrids - 2 x 18650 cells in a case. The GH7 has perceptually worse life because it does more processing. Only a matter of time before a manufacturer goes to 3 cell batteries. I’m down.
