Ghana Must Go! Sad Story of Why Nigeria Expelled 1 Million Ghanaians

On 17 January 1983, Nigeria’s President Shehu Shagari issued an executive order that expelled two million undocumented West African migrants. About 1 million of them were from Ghana… These West African immigrants had been attracted to Nigeria because of the 1970s oil boom, but by 1983 the economy had weakened, and it was an election year.
The Nigerian politicians hoped the expulsion would prove popular. Across Nigeria, up to two million migrants heard the warnings of arrest, prosecution and forced deportation if they didn’t comply.
Shagari’s policy strained relationships between the two countries and it took years for mutual respect to be reinstalled…………

I was a child when this happened in Nigeria. Many of my primary school teachers were Ghanaians, and I slso had several Ghanaians as friends. I had a very dear friend Kodjo, whose family had to leave. Yes, Ghana expelled Nigerians in 1969 before this happened but I think the lesson to be learned here is that it's easy for leaders to use selfish sentiments to rile the people against foreigners in order to cover their own short comings. It's a script as old as ancient Rome. From Hitler to Trump, its a simple strategy to blame others for your problems. I live and work in Ghana now and it's my honest truth that if Ghana amd Nigeria get their act together, individually and collectively, they will easily be Africa's giants.

Great story but incomplete. You failed to add that the deportation order affected mainly Ghanaians living in Lagos which was then Nigeria's capital city. Large number of Ghanaians did not leave Nigeria but headed to other parts, mainly Eastern Nigeria. Once there these Ghanaians were welcomed with open arms and they formed large vibrant communities deeply integrated with local cultures in Aba, Onitsha etc. where they continued to thrive uninterrupted. Perhaps the impact of Ghanaian presence is felt most in the arts e.g. the rise of a new genre of highlife music featuring bands such as Okukuseku, artists such as Amakye Dede etc. who combined Igbo and Ghana traditions into a new style as enduring as the Ghana must go bags. No story of Ghanaian expulsion from Nigeria is complete without this angle. Sadly Ghana must go has since morphed into something else with ongoing demolition of homes in the country.

'Ghana must go' applied in all the states of Nigeria not only Lagos. My father's gas station staff were all Ghanaian except a few locals, including home staff. Most of them left and some were given Nigerian identity as undercover to continue to live and work peacefully until they were ready to leave on their terms. It is always better to get accurate information before we share it with others.

It took me two sisters and my mum 4 days travelling in the bush with only elephant grasses paths to get to Kwara state , then we entered the northern part of Benin republic, then to the northern part of Togo travelling through Lamankara villages before travelling down to southern Togo , then we finally crossed into Ghana. I was 9 and I was carried by other passengers from one bus to the other since my mum couldn't handle all of us and we couldn't get our own seats. It was a time of anguish and turmoil for Ghanaian returnees because the borders were closed by the Nigerian government after a short notice. Some lost their lives trying to get out of Nigeria. We were literally being hidden from Nigerians by good neighbors because of the threats to our lives. Then when we finally made it to Ghana through hunger and thirst, we met a country who was hit by famine. Little or no food in Ghana. 😭😭😭

My father was displaced as a child in the chaos when Ghana 🇬🇭 retaliated and he didn’t make it back to Nigeria until he was about 19 years old, he always tells me about the horrible experiences he endured growing up in Ghana from his father’s relatives in Ghana because they didn’t leave he stayed with them and it got so bad that he left Ghana at the age of 19 went to Nigeria and did really well became rich through his fathers connections and settled in Lagos where me and all my siblings were raised..

Thx for the in-depth analysis of one of the darkest period in the Nigeria Ghana relationship. The first though was in 1969 when Ghana deported illegal aliens including several Nigerians under the Alliance Compliance Order under Prime Minister Busia. These two similar policies are no doubt the saddest periods in our joint history as Africans. Interestingly, I was a Ghanaian expatriate teacher in Nigerian- and as a legal resident, I remember the sad faces of my students as they somehow felt we will all be leaving…..no sooner after that exercise, many of us disillusioned also left Nigeria.

I live in London and one day I was in a shop buying some of my vegetables and iwisa corn meal(I am from Zambia).... As I was picking up a box of Indian onions which are very pungent and different to the British ones here, I overheard a lady ask the shopkeeper if he had Ghana must go, at first I thought it was a Ghanaian food. Then he brought some bags out which I recognised from back home but with a different name. I then asked the shopkeeper why they are called Ghana must go, he looked at me puzzled and said where are you from? I told him from Zambia. Then he went on to tell me the story.... You know when I came to Britain I was very much an africanist,my mum is Zimbabwean and dad a Zambian. I speak shona and senga fluently...... But my experiences in London have turned me into a nationalist and regionalist.

The order was foreigners without documents living in Ghana to regularize their stay by getting resident permits. Those illeterates Nigerians who misunderstood the order left. Nobody chased them away. I knew a Nigerian lady and a man who were working at State Construction Corporation in 1976, which was long after this permit regularization was ordered. It was Nigeria that expelled Ghanaians twice, and not the other way round. The first expulsion happened under Shewu Shaggari in 1982/83, and second expulsion was done by the military man who overthrew Shagari

Nigerians don't discriminate, the reason Ghanaians are freely moving around unhindered. There are many Ghanaians farming, tapping palm wine, weaving baskets, selling donuts, meddling shoes and clothes, hawking, operating local restaurants as well as engage in tailoring and other menial jobs in Nigeria. Recall that your dark skinned complexion and local ascent easily gives Ghanaians away. The Ghanaian government under Kofi Abrefa Busia tried it and the repercussions were graver. Presently, the Ghanaian government introduced draconian policies targeted at Nigerian movie producers and businesses in Ghana. Unfortunately, those actions have rendered the Ghanaian movie industry comatose with a collapsed economy. Remember that whenever Nigeria reciprocate, it's usually very fatal. The famous "Ghana Must Go " should serve as lesson. Many Ghanaians not born in that era still carries the name " Ghana Must Go " wherever they go.

Nigeria's presence In Ghana dates back to 1931. Nigeria thrived and was successful In Ghana until this happened on the 23rd of August 1957 - The Deportation Act was enacted by Nkrumah targeting rich Nigerians in Ghana like Aufa Osman Ladan, Ahmadu Baba, Mr Samuel Faleye, Mr B Oni, Alhaji Dae Bakare. They lost their livelihood and homes On the 18th of August 1969, Dr. Koffi Busia enacted the "Aliens Compliance Order" against all Nigerians living in Ghana roughly about 600, 000 (Over half a million) to leave Ghana within 14 days. (14th of December 1969) Most Nigerians living in Ghana were from the Yoruba tribe and they lost their possessions, their home, and their fortune. Thousands of Nigerians died in the process. This was happening during the Nigerian Civil War which made it worse for Nigeria's economy. This carried on till the early 1970s . 13 years later. Nigeria did the same to Ghanaians who came during the mid-70s oil boom. I Think Ghana should tell this story to the world.

At that time, I wasn’t happy about d repatriation bcos I was a victim who had to sell my morcycle to help me return to Gh ana. As a musician I could have stayed bcos my employers were ready to apply for me to stay. But I’m glad I left for Ghana : as I was fed up with Nigeria. & I am happy I did. I could have died in Nigeria. Political power separates the ruling class from the layman and they often have no idea of the extent of their decisions. I'm South African. The reason for the consistent and persistent coup d'etat in Ghana. The reason JJ Rowling, a foreigner, toppled the corrupt Ghanaian government was basically due to large scale corruption and bad leadership. He went further to execute all of them. Prior to 1st July 2007, the ghc was exchanged for $1 = ghc 10,000. In order to reshape the Ghanaian economy, the then president introduced the redenominations of the Ghanaian currency. In doing so, 4 digits (0000) was removed to equate the Cedi and the USD. Unfortunately, no economy shrouded in falsehoods survives . Ghana is not a producing nation. Recall that Ghana is officially bankrupt following the collapse of its economy and crashed of the Ghanaian Cedi. Today, the Cedi is exchange for around $1 = ghc 13 to 15. This simple means that if you add the 4 digits, the exchange rate for $1 will simply amount to ghc 130,000 or ghc 150,000. Either way, the Ghanaian economy is still in shambles.

Ghana didn’t kick the Igbo’s out they were allowed to stay and categorized as special aliens and didn’t send them back it was mostly Yoruba’s that were sent out and only Nigerians who didn’t have anything to prove to be able to stay in Ghana and we didn’t use that to insult u and kick u out for no reason to many of u we’re invading Ghana u ppl sent Ghanaians out and to degrade and insult our ppl and accused us of taking your jobs along with other Africans and still to this day use Ghana must go to feel like ur above Ghana and u never been above us and use it to mock Ghanaians but Ghana is better place to be and to live freely then your country Nigeria u ppl still running to Ghana and bringing crime now and talk anyhow and want to provoke us still to this day

It was a very sad story for Nigerian migrants in Ghana and it was also very sad for Ghanaian migrants in Nigeria. I like to thank you very much for your honest report. My ancestors migrated to the Colonial Gold Coast. Some of my relatives departed from Ghana even though their University age adult kids didn't know their ancestors' home in Nigeria because their parents never took them to Nigeria. It was a very sad story indeed for both Nigerians and Ghanaians. For Nigerians in Ghana since Colonial Gold Coast eras or periods, their properties such as houses, farms, lands, cars, and many different properties were taken away from them by some Ghanaians. Most of those Nigerian migrants had nothing left. So, they became very poor, depressed, and passed away in Nigeria due to the deportations from Ghana to Nigeria because they were not able to assimilate in Nigeria and life was unbearable for them.

For your information it wasn't all Nigerians who were deported. During the colonial era, the British brought in Hausas as policemen and soldiers. These Hausas are still in Ghana own lands and properties and have integrated into Ghanaian society. Now we have Hausas in every town in Ghana, We all now that Hausas are from Nigeria and not from Ghana. But they are now citizens of Ghana. My dad was part of those who were deported in the early 80s. Most Ghanaians lost their lives as they were attacked by Nigerians who took advantage of the situation. I know a family member who is still missing and up to now hasn't be heard of or found. Comments from mostly Nigerians seems to justify the repatriations of Ghanaians as tit-for-tat which I find absurd. Two wrongs doesn't make right and this history serves as a lesson for current and future leaders.

I witness a case where a Nigerian man chopped his Ghanaian girl friend into a fridge😢 and runaway. I personally helped more than 3 of them to establish their business but a little favor i asked from each of them, they all duped me heavily. This happened on different occasions. We love you, but you always betray our genue love for you guys. Now Nigerians are bitter in my mouth. I am yet to come across one good and sincere one. Their ladies are good and i learn a lot from them.

A very sad moment in my country's history. Political instability and border crisis led to our government expelling desperate Ghanians and that horrible term for a plastic bag becoming a norm.
