For Americans: this is the city where your independence was signed: The Treaty Of Ghent. In the Veldstraat there is a commemorative plaque on the wall.

I was in Ghent a few years ago for only a few hours, en route to Bruges - the little that I saw made me want to come back again someday and stay longer. This was a great preview! Thanks!

As some one born and bred in Ghent. Having lived in or near Ghent my entire life I congratulate you. That was very nicely done and unlike most you not just went over the same talking points that most do but also gave lots of info about the things of the beaten path. Must admit tho', you got very lucky with the weather because on sunny days it's a very lovely town to stroll lin but it being Belgium, there are lots of times that it's raining cats and dogs. =)

Granted, pictures never do, nothing like the real thing...e.g. how can you capture the feeling of the Grand Canyon in a snap?

Great video! I absolutely love all the cities and towns of Belgium. However, I've never visited when there was that much sunshine.

Many thanks, this was very informative and practical so I am looking forward to our day visit next week. Just one minor suggestion is it possible to show the plan of the town and your suggested route around at the end of the video?

You could download this map as a pdf, by opening it full screen - click the square in top-right. Then find the three dots in that big map and click “Print Map.” Better yet, import an interactive copy of this map for your mobile so you can use it while walking around. You do this by importing this map data to your mobile device, phone, or iPad. It is especially useful if you have a cellular connection while traveling. Then you can also add you own points of interests, restaurants, etc. It helps you navigate to your points of interest in real time. Step-by-step: How to make your own map: (sounds hard but is easy) 1. Open this map on my website to full screen by clicking the square on top right. 2. Click 3 dots in the top-left label, then choose Download KML, save file 3. Return to my webpage version of the map, and click “Create you own” 4. On your computer, sign in to My Maps. You need to have or create a google account. 5. Follow the steps to create a new map. 6. Create new map, name and save it 7. In the map legend for Untitled layer of your new map, click import 8. Drag or upload the KML file or photos containing your info, then click Select. 9. Map features are added automatically. 10. You can find more help on map-making from Google

Lovely ,but the place looks overrun . When was this ?
@denniscallan
@denniscallan 10 ай бұрын
By overrun, you mean crowded? It is not crowded. Ghent is a lively place with plenty of people out and about, which makes it interesting, but not to the degree of being crowded. Ghent is one of the least-overrun of Europe's attractive cities. I'm glad you found it lovely, thanks for your comment. Photographed last month, October. Have you been to any of Europe's top-20 cities lately? They are overrun, not Ghent. Two of Belgium's cities are crowded with tourists, Bruges and Brussels, both are wonderful places, but the rest of the country is quite calm and not packed with visitors. In coming months I will be featuring the following: Brussels, Bruges, Antwerp, Leuven, Mechelen, Ostend, Liege, Dinant, Mons, Namur, and Tournai.

There is one periode every year 10 days , from mid july to 22 23 july when there are HUGE. Festivities „ Gentse feesten „ and then the historica Centre IS. Truly overrun . All day and Night Musical performings , Theatre , big stages , small stages , attracties 80,000- 100,000 visitors perday from all over Europe. Many parties , lots of food lots of athmosphere. But busy !, truly a big experience !

Sorry ! The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb was not the first oil painting but ... the very last watercolor painting. Van Eijck Bros used a special kind of "blanc d'œuf" to glue the pigments.

the myth that "dulle griet was a dud" has lasted long enough, it is one of the most powerful guns cast in the middle ages and could shoot a 600lbs stone over a mile!, it was used several times in wars, the last time against the spanish in the 1580's!

As a native from this fantastic town I can confirm you've done your homework, well done, congratulations. Everyone who behaves is welcome in our town, we are glad to see you come and enjoy your stay. Unfortunately that does not count for Spanish people, because of history since they used to invade us 500 years ago.

As another born and bred native of Ghent... everyone is welcome if you behave. Yes even the Spanish. Afterall, if we would object to have people from countries that invaded us... it would mean there would be a ban on most of Europe from Italy to Norway and everything in between.
