When my grandma was in the hospital. This was playing on tv. It was on a station called turner classic movies. And i was so enthralled. I didn't finish watching pompoko that day but when I got home I was able to watch spirited away on the same station. It did a lot for me. And kept me from being too sad.

One of my top favorite Ghibli movies. Both playful and heart-wrenching. These endearing characters believe in their mission so much, and when they realize and accept that they're fighting a losing battle, it's devastating. Also a really creative reflection on old Japan vs. new Japan. My favorite character is Kincho VI, who despite first showing up halfway through, satisfyingly becomes one of the main characters, driving the plot. The yokai parade scene is breathtaking, and the scene where they turn their home back the way it used to be makes me cry. 10/10

I watch this movie whenever i miss my old hometown and all those old grandparents whom i grow up....the first Intro song is still my deeply touched song...can't explain but whenever I listen to it some emotional memories flood back in mind and definitely lump in my throat. I shows how much we missed all the natural surroundings of ours for urbanization

I love watching people diss this movie: It's weird. It shifts around as the story is ensemble, not centered on any one character. The jokes don't quite translate. All true. It is still my favorite Takahata film.

it's heavily based on Japanese culture and folklore, it's hard to translate that to western audience who doesn't have a base reference of Japanese culture and folklore. it's a rare ghibli film where the work revolve around the environment and urban areas expansion instead of specific characters. I guess people will get confused when the characters shift from one act to another trying to adapt to the changing environment they live in

It's my favorite Takahata film too. The international animation industry loved it. It received the Grand Prix for Best Animated Feature Film at the Annecy festival in 1995.

@@GKIDStv my only critique about the dub (other than the obvious “Tanuki = Raccoon” localization, or “Testicles = Pouch” censoring) is that they didn’t cast Frank Welker as Oshō, as I thought Welker’s voice for Thaddeus Plotz from Animaniacs (since Tress MacNeille and Maurice LaMarche also voiced in this dub) was much closer to the Japanese voice than the actor who voices Owl from Disney’s Winnie the Pooh Franchise between the 1990s and the 2000s.

Walk in the movie hearing most people say it’s just fine. Movie ends, and I’m tearing up. What a phenomenal work.

Wrong. There's literally no Studio Ghibli movie worse than Earwig and the Witch.
