Chempedak is quite similar to jackfruit rather than durian. As for drinking from the shell, actually we add salt to the water and drink from the center edge away from the sharp thorns. I was told that durian is heaty so you drink salt water to neutralise the heat, something like that.

Yes salt water is good. The other antidote is actually another fruit, mangosteen (purple in color) Both of the fruits are available in the same season. Delicious too.

Rojak’s sauce is made with prawn paste, asam pulp dissolve in water, sugar, chili paste top with roasted peanut chips. The ingredients are pineapple, cucumber, turnips, cooked bean sprouts, youtiao, & taupok (deep fried bean curd). For moe aromatic taste, sometimes torch ginger bud slices are added. Some vendors also add apple or Jambu slices on request and u pay a little more.

I add salt and water and drink from the husk. It does remove the durian smell from my mouth (fingers too, if I wash in saltwater rubbed mildly in the husk) and heat. Not a myth for me :) But I personally prefer bitter durians rather than the sweet ones. Btw, I like the Japanese students' active vibes, it's nice to see that they're able to voice out what they really think.

Hi Ojisan, I am a 56years old Singaporean. My name is Johnson, your subscriber and viewer. I like to share some interesting info on the proper way of eating Durian.. I used to eat durians with bare hands.. As durian is regarded as a ‘heaty’ fruit, we locals normally eat mangosteen (cooling fruit) to neutralize the ‘heatiness’.. Another way is to drink water with a pinch of salt on the husk to also cool down our body and not to take away the smell as your wife suggested. Now the best part is this, since I’m eating with bare hands, the smell on my hand will be strong.. So I was taught when I was young to wash my hands with running tap water over the reverse side of the husk (spiky portion) onto our hands.. You will be amazed the smell immediately disappear… Hope it’s an interesting info for you.. Cheers!

You actually need to add maybe 1/4 teaspoon of salt into the water, it's said to aid with cooling you down from the "heatiness" of the fruit itself while the shell removes the lingering smell

The vegetable use in Rojak is actually called Jicama, also known as mang guang or mexican turnip. The texture will be crunchier than turnip after cooking and the taste profile is more similar to a fruit rather than a vegetables.

Well, for durians, actually they come from Malaysia. But, Singaporeans are willing to pay good prices to import them. They are seasonal fruit. So, we do not get them whole year round. It is interesting to see the Japanese students reacted to their first encounter with the King of the fruits. May they have an adventurous spirit to try new things to have a richer life experience. They may not be able to experience tasting Musang durian in Japan as the fruit turns bad one or two days after harvest.

Actually, cempedak is a family of jackfruit & the seeds can be eaten after boiling it. As for durian, the more bitter the better & it is usually orangy-yellow in color. Overall, durian is a nutritional fruit.
@fooksengloke3625
@fooksengloke3625 2 жыл бұрын
Actually the bitter taste in some durian is due to alcohol from fermentation. If eaten too much, it can give you a sore throat. The sweet durian is when it is just ripe and fermentation has not started.

Ghib-san should have bought the non-chilli version of those food they tried. Rojak and popiah definitely have non-spicy ones. And isn't cempedak jackfruit? Oh, Erina-san likes her durian! Interesting. But Ghib-san, for newcomers to durians, especially those who have an initial dislike/fear of the smell, you should start them on D13 first. It's known to be the best durian cultivar to introduce to first-timers. And you don't drink from the thorns side, you drink from the opposite side where the soft, straight edge is. Also, if you eat without gloves (no Singaporean eat with gloves, urgh, a travesty, an insult to the durian), one way to remove the smell from your fingers after eating is, you put a piece of husk under running water and wash your fingers under the husk. Another way is to use the skin of oranges. 17:39 I think Erina-san is not a pure Japanese.....lol. First time trying durians and she's eating it so enthusiastically and likes it! Lol......just kidding. Am sure she's pure Japanese. And it also looks like she really knows how to eat it clean clean. Her seed looks completely clean of all flesh, just like how most Singaporeans eat their durians.
