I love my Kelly Kettle, I pair it with a thermos. I live off grid and use mine every day. I drilled a hole in the stopper 4 two reasons, 1 I can run it with the stopper on, no volcano eruption, 2 I put a silicone hose in that hole attached to a stainless steel straw and have a steam wand that I can steam blast with for cleaning stuff, it'll cook oatmeal or eggs.

You're comparing boiling water time... but that was a lot more water on the stove! Thanks for the video 👌

I have seen that you couldn't hold the whistle when water boils because it is made of metal. KK has a silicone whistle that you can hold it at the edges with bare hands plus a keyring that you can place your finger in it (it doesn't get hot) for pouring water. A small but not to be neglected detail.

Thanks for the video, here in Canada I went with the KK trekker which is their smallest offering for the solo outdoorsman. The deciding factors for me were stainless steel (I couldn't find a SS ghillie kettle) and the cost for what I got, I went with the full trekker package that included a tiny pot with lid/pan and a pot gripper, tiny grill about a hamburger patty size, the hobo stove attachment, the dual purpose pot stand that doubles as a fire pan holder keeping it lifted off the ground if your not using it on top of the kettle to utilize the flames and a coffee cup with silicone lip guard. Everything with the exception of the pot stand nests together for storage, I'll probably never use the cooking grate for its intended purpose it'll get repurposed. The hobo attachment they have (it can be seen in the one picture you showed) is actually a pretty good idea, you pop the kettle off and place it on top of your fire base and it sits raised up almost two inches higher than the fire bowl and has fingers going out that act as a flat surface that will hold a pan or pot no problem while still allowing air to be pulled through and the ability to keep feeding wood in while you cook. The kettle has a green silicone stopper with a whistle incorporated into it which illuminates the danger of people forgetting to pull the cork out. The pot and lid can be useful for cooking to a degree but I'll likely use them as a holder for dehydrated soup mix I make with a ranger band holding them together. I haven't owned a ghillie, the KK is my first of this type of system I'd have to agree with you, they're both good systems

Sound reasoning. I bought the full kit when I got my KK. I think it's the same as yours, just with a bigger kettle. I hadn't thought about the Stainless Steel difference when I ordered the Ghille Kettle. In retrospect, I probably should have gone with that.

The Ghillie only comes in aluminium, right? That's a pretty big difference and one that makes the KK the better option for durability and possibly health too.

Fair point. If that's an issue for you then the KK is definitely the way to go.

Alright I have the kk been using it for years. Don't cook on top of kettle. Boil your water set kettle aside put the folding grate on the base fits right in then cook on that much easier and not going to tip over .

I personally have nothing against China. But, seeing "Made in China" written on 80% of the stuff I own makes me want to buy stuff made in other countries. Human nature, I guess? LOL Anyway, once I realized the KK is made in China, I took it off the list. Looking at the Petromax version. I like the butterfly handles vs messing around with the chain. Great concept, no doubt!

I ended up going with the ghillie kettle for the sole reason that it’s made in the UK. Both priced about the same but the Kelly kettle is made in China which is extremely unfortunate. If Kelly was still made in Ireland I would have chosen their product as I would have preferred a stainless steel option over aluminum.

Ghillie kettle has aluminium base thar will burn out in time, Kelly Kettle has a stainless steel base. If all you want to do is boil water, try the Ghillie M-Kettle, Australian EcoBilly (stainless steel) & numerous others. I prefer my gear to be capable of doing more than one thing. I own a Kelly kettle trekker for solo use. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for your reply. I agree-- SS probably would have been a better choice. However, considering how many decades they've been making the ghillie kettle, I'd imagine you'd be hearing about the base burning out everywhere in the adventure community if it were actually an issue. More likely I'll burn out before it does.

@@hardcorecampinggear I’m not talking about preparedness or camping. You mentioned that your wife was using a stove top kettle and how few AirBnB have a way of heating water and I observed (not disparagingly) that seemingly very few Americans have/use electric kettles, which I find unusual given it’s a daily essential in a UK kitchen. In fact, our national grid keeps an eye on things like advert breaks during televised public events so they can ramp up production ready for the surge in need as people go and put the kettle on during the break.
@hardcorecampinggear
@hardcorecampinggear 4 ай бұрын
@@iainamurray Most American homes use a stovetop kettle, whether they have an electric stove top or a gas stove top. My wife has a dedicated plugin electric kettle because it heats water faster than a kettle on the stovetop. The device in the video is for emergency use or camping. When Hurricane Ian hit in Florida we were without power for 5 days. Some in Northport were without power for 3-4 weeks.

25 minutes to boil water on the stove? uh, it should take less than 8 minutes unless you are like 4000 feet up or more... i think on average my water is a roiling boil in 5ish minutes with a glass pot that i use for ramen. so it might be that stove top pot just is no good, get a proper pan with surface area?

@rubygray7749
@rubygray7749 11 ай бұрын
@@katzonmarketing5254 I've read that the Kelly Kettle should always be filled with water, as heating it partially filled can damage it. But a full kettle boils very quickly. Putting a regular coffee pot type kettle on that oversized stove top ring us absurd what a waste of energy. You have a very small base trying to heat a tall column of water, very inefficient. Very low surface area exposed to heat. The reason the KK works so efficiently, is its maximum surface area exposed to heat. I've noticed over many decades of observing silly women boiling kettles in staff tea rooms, that they almost invariably fill a 2 litre kettle with cold water, which takes an age to boil. They then make one cup of tea and leave the kettle to get cold again. Often, when I am (efficiently) boiling the bare minimum water necessary to make my own cup of tea, they will barge in, and fill the almost-boiled kettle with cold water, as above.

Electric kettles are available in America but they are slower because we use 120 volts in houses vs 220 in other regions of the world. Boiling water on the kitchen stove is usually faster than an electric kettle.

Untrue. They claim this but the earliest patents are 1928 for Sirram and 1929 for Thermette. The Kelly Kettle company didn’t even exist until the 1950s. They hold no patents or can show any proof they invented this. No photos, no blueprints, no specimens.

You don’t have to cook on the top of the Kelly kettle, Once your water has boiled set it aside and cook on the base with attachments, The Kelly kettle is stainless steel where as the ghillie kettle is aluminium, Stainless steel is much better durability plus healthier, They are almost identical in design but the Kelly kettle is the winner for the reasons I mentioned.

Those cooking options are really impractical. The problem I see with the chimney pot stand is that while your cooking the kettle will be boiling off with a lot of steam getting the way. If you need a long cook time the kettle could run dry Also trying to feed the burner will be awkward.

Dunno if it's a Cultural thing but 1. in UK ( Euroland is something else) we have corded electrical kettles: Small travellers ones and others taking 2-3 pint size ( 1.7L in glass is ours) and it is KWIK. ( under 3kW input for the record). 2. Getting your Beanz to cook at the same time or cuppasoup in a pot with the escaping heat is a worthwhile thing with the supplied equipment. Yes OK if you are just plain cooking, or for more/larger quantities you'll want something better. WE have the Silicone whistle on our KK, but the issue is dry fuel in the wilds! Cardboard itself is v good - but doesn't grow on trees as a rule!
