Ghost Ball Aiming and the Throw Effect
In this video we look at the Ghost Ball theory. We look at how the ghost ball technique gives us an aiming system with practical shots and graphical demonstrations. We also explain the flaws in the theory and examine how the Throw Effect needs to be considered. The shots are carried out on a 7ft UK 8 ball table but most of the same principles apply to both american pool and snooker.

Thanks! Finally someone who explains what throw is clearly and concisely! Unfortunately most billiards channels assume people watching already know a bunch of technical terms and other surrounding info that makes most videos totally miss the mark in terms of getting the point across.

You could have explained that the throw effect is caused by the friction causing spin and that the speed if the cue ball dictates how much spin. For example a fine cut at a greater speed will make the cut less fine and at a slower speed more fine. Great explanation of the basic concept though. Great channel !

This was a good tutorial except I think it should be mentioned that the throw will depend on the speed and at a faster speed will not be a heavy factor. This is why many players unknowingly just hit it hard for better results. And if you use a bit of opposite spin to the cut then you can still aim at the ghost ball at a reduced speed. But with a high power shot that has spin you will need to aim closer to the opposite side of the rail of then the spin applied to avoid deflection. 15-30 degree cuts will require a good bit of spin while lesser or larger cuts may require less spin to pot.

Does the ghost ball method work for UK 8ball? The white is smaller. Be great if you can do a in-depth video about it buddy. Keep up great work. 👍
@PoolSchool
@PoolSchool 3 жыл бұрын
Yes it works for uk 8ball. When you imagine the ghost ball you obviously need to be picturing the smaller white, not a ball the same size as the ball you are potting. Principles are all the same though.

Correct me if I’m wrong. Little help needed. Seems like every shot is center of cue ball to outside edge of object ball?????
@PoolSchool
@PoolSchool 5 жыл бұрын
No that doesn't work. If you take the two extremes of a straight shot and a really fine cut, then it should be fairly clear that is not the case. On a straight shot you are aiming centre cue ball to centre object ball. On a fine cut you are aiming centre cue ball to the centre of the imaginary cue ball which is half a cue ball behind the object ball. It might feel close to centre of cue ball to edge of object ball for a particular angle but it is certainly not always the case

Question: to compensate for throw effect can't you just apply spin in the direction of the pocket?
@PoolSchool
@PoolSchool Жыл бұрын
Yes you can but there are quite a few things you need to consider when applying side spin so It's not always that straight forward.

Do you aim to the back of the pocket or to the front?
@PoolSchool
@PoolSchool 3 жыл бұрын
Both really. I tend to think of it more as a line passing right through the pocket and beyond. So if you were straight on to a pocket that line would pass through the middle of the front and the middle of the back of the pocket. It’s obviously different when you come round to tight angles. At a very tight angle to a corner for example, the line might just glance the front of the pocket and pass through the jaw and not even touch the back of the pocket. Does that make sense?

This is one way to compensate for cut induced throw (CIT). Another way is to use "gearing" or outside english which eliminates or cancels out the CIT.
@PoolSchool
@PoolSchool 5 жыл бұрын
This is very true, but I'd encourage beginners not to use side (or english as you call it), until they have a really good grasp of the game. It is certainly another way of achieving the same result as you suggest though.
@rraammyy92

I would use touch of outside english with top spin to minimize the deflection and throw ( 2 o'clock maybe)

@jamesoconnell30

Wouldn't it be more exaggerated at high speed because the cue ball would knock the object ball more offline (more power)?
@johnsample9640
@johnsample9640 3 жыл бұрын
couldnt we use outside english (in this case right english) to eliminate the throw?
@PoolSchool
@PoolSchool 3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can use side (or english) to help counter the throw but it's not something I'd recomend for beginners. You might not want the side one the cue ball when it reaches the cushion and it also throws up lots of other things to consider. If you did use side on that particular shot then you'd actually want to use left hand side (left english). Hitting the cue ball on the right would cause it to deflect to the left which would mean hitting the object ball far too thick and actually making things worse. Hitting the cue ball to the left would cause it to deflect to the right which would have the same result as aiming slightly more to the right with centre ball striking. It's important to understand throw and what's going and particularliy for beginners, cueing straight and striking centre ball is the best way to be consistent and help them understand what is going on.

What's the REASON for the red dots all over the cue ball?
@PoolSchool
@PoolSchool 2 жыл бұрын
It’s mainly a TV thing so that viewers could see the spin on the cue ball I think. Useful when practicing as well as you can see spin run out, or if you put unwanted side on the ball.
