I love how the lyrics can be easily misinterpreted, I thought "I want to bewitch you" was "I want to be with you" for a while. A devilish way of drawing in unsuspecting listeners into a truly great, but still evil song. Well done, 10 points for trickery. I can hear a zillion demons applauding.

I don't know if anyone caught this up the way I did, but it's kind of a song about embracing death. Not just about love, but about the time of death suddenly coming. At the first verse: "You'll soon be hearing the chimes Close to midnight If I could turn back the time I'd make all right" We could interpret this as the protagonist saying he was not ready to face death just yet. The second verse just makes it more obvious: "How could it end like this? There's a sting in the way you kiss me Something within your eyes Said it could be the last time 'Fore it's over!" Then, the chorus might just be death itself answering to the protagonist, telling him that it just want to bewitch him in the moonlight and to let himself go. In the rest of the song, we can see that our protagonist finally embraces it.

This is a good theory. I back this, I like that! The concept of it being death really actually fits Ghost and goes with how they said it was going to be darker, in that sense these lyrics are actually really dark being masked (like plague doctors) to be cheery and good.

I think it goes to show that you don't have to sound as brutal as death metal, sludge metal or even funeral doom metal (no joke that's a real genre) to sing about death. Even if you played a song about death on the ukulele, it would make no difference regardless to how cheery it sounds. I also like to think that there is an idea within all the albums in which they wanted to recreate that old school 70's and 80's style to keep it alive to this day. Opus Eponymous is evident of that of course. From what I can hear in Rats and Dance Macabre, they aim to take us back in time in a musical sense the same way Opus did. Aside from that, they also pay some homage to old classic horror right down to the cheesiness some of those movies had whether it be special effects, monsters and acting. Like Special said in one interview back in the Meliora era, he said something along the lines of "In my world, cats and Satan (as a character) share the same elements: Beauty, Style, Wit and Intellect". So maybe those elements are being shuffled around and giving us that image/impression of The Devil rather than just show us an image of a red man with horns and a pitchfork. I'm going too deep here (and slightly off topic in regards of sound). My theorising side came to life since Chapter One came out. But what do you think?

Alas the title: Dance Macabre or danse macabre in French, meaning dance of death. The lyrics ARE about dancing and being with and kissing Death. Yes, capital D, because Death in this case is a character from the Bible. He, by the way, rides a white horse, just like Cardinal does at the end of Rats. The more one knows. :D Damn, I love Tobias' songwriting.

That's what happens when you take chances. A lot of people prefer Opus and Infestissumam because that's their opinion of Ghost's roots. For me, that's just where Ghost chose to begin. Ghost borrows from eras as they please. Tobias also draws inspiration from his past projects which are widely varied. I'd bet three albums from now there are going to be people complaining that "This sounds nothing like Meliora or Prequelle", "I miss Dance Macabre". I choose to be along for the ride. Ghost may borrow. But, they're still one of the most original bands out today.

I find the evolution of the band and difference in albums is amazing, keeping a fresh feel while taking from past genres and styles. I am waiting for the "this isnt metal" or "these guys are not true metal" just so i can have a laugh at the salt lol.
