Each of Ghost's albums have a theme, the album this is from has a theme of a plague hitting the world. This song is was inspired by during the black death, when the plague would reach town, the brothels and beer halls and what not would fill up with people getting wasted and getting their last joy out of life before the Plague wiped out the community. The album was released in 2018, and Ghost toured in support of the album with their last scheduled show taking place in March of 2020, days before the world went into full lock down for the Covid-19 pandemic.

Dance Macabre was my Spiritual Awakening. My friend invited me to the concert and i had never heard them I only listened to them once a bit to feel the vibe but i hadn't really till i went. I was vibing with a cold the whole time but this song came on, the disco lights, the confetti, the dancing, it all came together and I swore i felt something resonate in my soul and I was like. I want to listen to this band I want to love this band. Haven't stopped listening to them since February. I just have been slowly going through each album and just really appreciate the music and the lyrics got into the lore of the band. I want to go again but this time as a full fledged Ghost Fan. Anyway Recomendations: Circe, Spillways, Gheleh/Zombie Queen.

If you like the backup vocals, you should listen to Per Áspera Ad Inferi live. The female backup vocalists (ghoulettes) are so clear and it adds a whole new level to the song. The only reason I say live is because the ghoulettes are part of the new line up to mark the newest “era” of Ghost and the first ghoulettes to sing backup and play instead of just playing an instrument.

I've being in my first ritual last year, and if you think this song is sick, ou have no idea how it is live... just can't explain, you need to live it! They closed the show with Kiss The Go-Goat, Dance Macabre and Square Hammer as the encore, and the crowd simply couldn't stop jumping!

Adding to the rest of the comments, the "sting" in the way she kisses him is a reference to him becoming infected with the plague through sharing breath/saliva (I'm not too sure what the main via of transmission for the black death was, but it's a nice detail :) )

Yep, this album was all about the plague, and this song is about a couple who who may/may not have made it through the night. AND... the video is also all about the introduction of Papa Nihil and Sister Imperator (aka Prequel... look for the Ghost chapters available on youtube, they're a riot!!!). I look forward to many more years of humour, a bit of ghoulishness (NOT referring to the Ghouls but they're priceless!!!), fantastic music, and AWESOME live shows!!!! (and forget about the Satanic crap, Tobias is far more Spiritual than anything, and recognizes that history isn't always accurate in books..... )
