Connor's experiences hearing things at night as a kid is actually super common, auditory hallucinations when you're half awake and stuff. It's just cause your brain is still kinda dreaming, its' the same phenomenon that causes Sleep Paralysis Demons
@Celiane_892 ай бұрын
Yup. I had that happen to myself quite a few times as a kid, though I think I had the visual hallucinations more. I do remember that cause one time I ended up falling between my bed and the nightstand(I had a pull out and raise bed) and ended up dislocating my arm inbetween my bed and it. All cause of some weird freaky shit I thought was going on over my sisters bed, lol.

I'm taking an elective called "The Biology of Science Fiction" this semester and, funnily enough, we did tackle the idea of aliens and other extraterrestrial life existing based solely on the notion of the impossibility they *didn't* exist considering the vastness of the universe. In fact, there's actually a name for it! It's called the Fermi paradox. Borrowing the definition from a site because I don't wanna risk getting it wrong, it's defined as "the apparent conflict between the fact that humans have found no evidence of intelligent extraterrestrial life despite the probability that it exists, given what we know about the universe." Simply put, they *have* to be out there somewhere. The universe is just too big for them not to be.
@catmage2 ай бұрын
I don't think this solves the Fermi Paradox, but the paradox doesn't consider how unlikely it is for two civilizations to become space-faring _at the same time_ . We've just barely entered our space age, and we're already destroying ourselves, already making our planet unihabitable. The probability of another civilization having existed is not insignificant. But did they exist in the same 200k year span as humanity (a 0.001% slice of the age of the universe), in an area that is even remotely close to us? Do they exist in the 0.035% of that already tiny slice that we have been exploring space? Much less likely. If we ever interact with an extraterestrial entity, it will most likely be the Voyager 1 of a long, long dead civilization. Ours has only traveled 60% of the distance to our closest neighboring star, and it's not even headed in that direction.

Lando continues to reinforce the psychopathic character while Connor continues to be our babygirl. Kurzgesagt - In a Nutshell talks about aliens in one of my favorite videos where they talk about the The Kardashev Scale. The more energy a species uses, the more advanced they get. To ants, the way we use resources and energy is so beyond them that we might as well seem like gods. Ants mean so little to us that we crush them with little care. An alien species with the means to communicate and travel all the way to us would be so advanced that they might see us as ants. Which is probably not a great thing.

43:50 For anyone who hasn't seen Law Abiding Citizen, there's a scene where the main character's wife is r*ped and killed by this house invader early on in the film. Later on, the main character captures the invader in some warehouse, has him drugged and locked up where he can't move or scream but can feel pain, and then slowly saws off all their limbs lol. That's the scene Connor is probably referring to.

My Grandma had this saying when I was growing up whenever it came to food. "Think of the poor starving children in China." It would scare/guilt us into finishing our meals even if we were full. To this day the residual imprinting still hits. Just like that childhood imprinting about haunting. She had antique dress mannequins in her basement from her parade days that looked as if they would move and a player piano. It would always give us the creeps. Much like my uncle's heavy metal themed basement where he'd host theme parties, very dark and very aesthetic (he was also a Hell's Angels member). So yes our childhood can sensitize us to energies and spirits. Or the possibility of things coming after us at night caused by anxiety. Like Connor I saw strange things growing up too and I thought I saw someone close my bedroom door when no one was there. To this day I can't sleep with the door closed, sensory deprived or without plushies close. I agree that school bathrooms are creepy. My art college was in a 70+ year old heritage building and the bathroom was in the dark dingy basement. It was VERY scary and no one doubted that it could have been haunted. I'm not a fan of true crime shows/movies too. It does disturb me. The fact that it is rooted in reality makes it worse. When it comes to Anime I am for linear gradual growth in stories. Sailor Moon and Fruits Basket being an example of this with the manga faithful anime adaptions. It gave satisfying endings without going on forever. My favorite pokemon? Sinestea, Sylveon, Lucario, Alcremie, Togekiss and Hatterene to name a few. My team has always been psychic fairy focused. Lucario being the exception or perhaps I considered it the bodyguard of the team? I want to try Pokemon Z. I have liked the seasons set in fictional Paris and England and the fashion centered qualities of them. ^o^ Thanks guys!

1:00:46 Here's the secret to cliches that most people don't know: 1. The reason something is a cliche is because it was originally really good, so people copied it. 2. The reason why it was good, is because the original creator really had to think about it and craft it so that it made sense in that story. 3. Later stories copy that specific element without copying the framework around it. 4. Because the thing is plucked without context, it's recognizeable to anyone that's seen it, but it's also badly done, BECAUSE it was plucked out rather than being crafted. 5. Therefore, a cliche itself isn't bad, it's the fact that the cliche isn't integrated into the story itself when copied! Hunter X Hunter is a story where the creator put a helluva lot effort into the writing, setting, characters, plot, etc, so the things that are cliche elsewhere fit seamlessly in it, because they arise DUE to the story, not DESPITE it. And that's why cliches are used, because someone used them really well originally, then people copied them because it was originally good, and is now recognizeable, so they "inherit" the "goodness" of the cliche with zero effort. Anyone who's ever tried to make an original story that doesn't rely on any meta elements knows that it's a lot of hard work, most of which won't even be recognized by the majority of the readers/viewers. Thus, most writers use cliches as short-hands for plot, story, and character elements to reap the benefits with minimal effort(and minimal screentime), yet they still work for some readers/viewers. That's also why cliche's and tropes shouldn't automatically mean that something is poorly written, because they CAN be used very well. It's just that most stories don't. Just because you recognize the trope or cliche doesn't make it bad, but rather the specifics of how it's used and why.

@portaportus_2 ай бұрын
Forgetting things at home or anywhere else is one of the most klutz moments for sure, so listening to Lando talk about going to pick up this or that and inevitably not doing it reminds me of how you can get up, walk outside only to realize you left your phone or keys and needing to head back for it. Happens all the time and somehow you can't ever seem to get rid of that trait. It's kind of a constant companion in that regard. Meanwhile eating food for the sake of emptying the plate even though you're full, I can relate to in a sense that I would feel bad for leaving all that delicous food set out before you. It kind of connects to this idea of not finishing eating as a way of bad manners since someone went to all the trouble preparing it for you, doesn't it? That ghost haunting story was wild to listen to, seemed indeed reminiscent of a Phasmophobia run what with the self-made spear for defense and someone coming along armed with a camera or like college ghost hunting in movies. It certainly sounded unnatural, the part about the friend suddenly waking up and interrupting in particular. From my own experience, every grandparents house appears to have this kind of layout, there's always one off limits area or rooms that're just there and you end up wondering if something haunted is waiting behind that door. There's also some truth in us younger folks being more superstitious, maybe because our parents told us about these growing up and they became so ingrained in our minds. This entire section was rather thought provoking, talking about conspiracy theories and cryptids, the existence or non-existence of ghosts or aliens... They all have aspects to them that make them both so fascinating and terrifying, such as the vast emptiness of the universe for aliens or the formless, paranormal advantage of a ghost. Believing or not believing in them, it divides but all things considered there are definitely unexplainable phenomena out there. Now, if we were to ever be visited by aliens I wouldn't think fighting them is the best of options since we could exchange knowledge instead. Even if Lando's vivid description of beating the living daylights out of them made me chuckle. 😂 Morbid curiosity is such an interesting topic as well, watching horror scenes for the sake of knowing what happened... Sometimes curiosity kills the cat and you need to know. Will keep the documentary mentioned in mind, sounds like it'll be a good watch! Going into the manga and anime talk, I agree there's beauty to be had in a well-paced character's growth towards becoming stronger to overcome someone who initially seemed impossible to defeat, with all the missteps and losses that come along with that. If the writing is consistent, it's a treat. One Piece delivers well in that regard with the seriousness behind all the goofy events going on, although I myself dropped it due to the sheer amount of chapters. Ongoing series are hard to keep up with at times. Questions corner fun as usual, choosing ghosts to turn into after discussing them in-depth and at length was on brand - turning into one with a good skillset has its merits, the more chaos the better it seems. The Pokémon related question and your subsequent talk brought me a great deal of nostalgia and current/ongoing love considering I've been a long-term fan of the series! As an avid enjoyer of Gen 5 (Pkmn Black & White, Black 2 & White 2), it gave me a big old smile when I heard Connor say one of his faves is Chandelure since that's also among one of the ones I love dearly. You gave me some core memories talking about Blaine in the anime, mentioning Pokémon Colosseum, Pokémon Channel (the game where you watch TV with Pikachu!) as well as Snap. Both of you have fine taste in the pocket monsters, analyzing Magmar's design the way you did is something so specific to Pokémon as a franchise. No matter which one, the designs are all so unique in their origins, so intricate and thoughtful and each one has its charms meaning there's always someone out there who likes it! I can definitely see Connor using Ghost, Dark and Poison types as well as him enjoying the ones based on objects or the like. Electric being a choice for Lando seems feasible, Psychic could also fit but since he was the one who talked about Blaine and his Magmar I could see him be like the hot-heated quiz master and use Fire! And you're onto something when you said Hitmonchan being more popular than Hitmonlee, growing up I've barely seen anyone prefer the latter although it's such a cool Fighting type. Gastly and Haunter for sure are more true to ghosts, Gengar's more on the mischievous spirit side. Mr. Mime nowadays is silly to me, it scared me as a kid though... If you two ever dedicated an episode to talking purely about all things Pokémon, I'd certainly be up for it I would love to hear your thoughts and opinions! Great pie throwing aim from Prof today, a well earned win and thank you guys for another cool episode!

At least it's nice to hear that it's not just me who thinks that "just because we get older and more experienced doesn't mean we can't be scared", if anything that just shows we're able to see things as they are (ie. we fear *fill in the blank), and acknowledge that it is a thing. Dealing with that and getting over it is a whole other business itself, but at least that's a good entry point. Also just to freak our jests, each time I watch your podcasts some of your ancestors come in my bubble and say hi. Don't ask why, I dunno either. I wish it was a joke tho, but hey I'm gonna ball. 😆

The reason manga/anime extend so much is that the mangaka is essentially out of a job once it ends. They need to at least have another serializable story before ending the one that currently pays their bills. Besides, the publishers probably pressure the mangaka to keep the series going, since they know they can monetize it.

For the manga ending talk around 52:00 I always got the impression that when a series became popular/long running enough the magazine or editor would effectively browbeat the author into continuing it given how important merchandise and tie-ins are to making money, until people get bored of it at which point it gets cut loose. For a lot of stories, there may have been a coherent ending at some point but they have to keep the characters running in circles indefinitely and it just becomes kill god as you said since they've run out of escalation when the editor comes in and says you have 10 issues to end this since we need to make room for whatever hot new title they have since you're dragging in the popularity rankings.

42:04 The movie being referenced here is 'Fire in the Sky' (1993). Based on the 1978 novel, 'The Walton Experience' by Travis Walton. There is skepticism that implies that Walton and Mike Rogers created a hoax by staying on the job site until after dark, using an alternative route from the job site and a fire tower with a spotlight along that route. Later: "Comeuppance" is a word indicating punishment that is deserved.

As a fan of both HXH and One Piece, I feel like there's some major things to take into consideration. Hunter x Hunter is 400 chapters, One Piece is 1100+. I think HXH has the same thing of "this is the most strongest foe we have met up to this point". Gon went from Hanzo, to Heaven's Arena with learning nen and fighting the tops guy, then fighting bomb guy, then Neferpitou. And in the case of goofy looking antagonists, HXH has them too. The main villain for chimera ant is a bottle Freiza/Cell. And Gon's enemy is a cat girl ant. I much prefer HXH in terms of reading about the comabt, but there's a bit of bias there. And honestly I read One Piece less as a shounen series and more as a Fantasy Epic akin to LOTR. There is also that thing of being aware that One Piece is VERY GOOFY. But also he kinda stomps on the Biscuit guy. edit: HOLD UP HE LOVES 7 DEADLY SINS??? Bruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh.

I'm super thankful that you guys didn't end with the supernatural and extraterrestrial stuff because I need to sleep at night (and the episode gets released at night in my timezone lol). It's interesting to hear other people's stories, experiences and takes about these things. Somehow we all have experiences or know someone with experiences such as these but never come down to something concrete. Aliens are out there I believe, given we've already found at least 10 planets that are like earth in other galaxies (talking about the Kepler ones), and this is considering life AS WE KNOW IT and not counting life that could emerge in other conditions. Thanks for another hit episode, take care guys

I feel like a lot of the problems they have with "anime/manga" are because they're just talking about the big battle shonen series tbh, like if y'all love Code Geass you should check out some other mecha shows like Big O or one of the Gundam series. Since Connor loves villain characters I bet he would love the antagonist of all time, Char Aznable. Or Lando might enjoy Samurai Flamenco. There's so much great anime that isn't talked about as much but doesn't have all of the common tropes that people get tired of in Shonen Jump stories.

Thanks for another fun ep!! ...tho Lando... scares me a little more and more each episode with these tyrannical fantasies erm LOL Loved the ep!! The Aliens and Ghosts talk was a lot fun, related a lot to the way you guys think about them. I def feel the same, I'm not religious and I don't feel like I truly believe in ghosts, but at the same time, it still scares me, and I would never f around with stuff that "could" "bring stuff forth", just in case..But I think thing that makes them scary to me, and probably to others, is the idea of ghosts immediate connection with death and dying and human mortality, and the question of what, if anything, happens "after death". With aliens, I'm on the same page of like.. the universe is wayy too big and unknown for them not to be real, which for some reason, makes it less scary to me personally, maybe because it then becomes SOMEWHAT grounded in reality that way and more tangible?? Like if they're real and out there and haven't come for us yet, I feel like they won't or it'll be a bazongo billion years before they do? But that ghost in the hallway or scary ass bathroom?? Or the invisible thing my dog might stare at in the middle of the night? That could be a right here right now kinda thing (kinda even scared to type shit like that LOL) O.O But I love that all us thirty year olds are indeed scaredy cats together, I find it hilarious somewhat comforting lol. Maybe it's our collective generational anxiety LOL Anyway! Fun ep! again Other than learning Lando has joyful reaction to imaginary oppressive violence ghosts would definitely choose to haunt Lando for SURE, sorry my dude o7

What I can tell Lando about how to enjoy super-long manga series is simple... just read the story off the wiki. You'll probably be able to do it during your free time, shouldn't take at least 30 minutes a day. You won't miss much by not reading it for a year when you can consume the content in 30 minutes. That's how I got caught up to One Piece, and now I'm shelving it again for another two years.

When it comes to letting manga end, I know at least Shueisha/Jump is getting better at letting mangaka/creators stick to and end their series on their own terms. Like Kimetsu no Yaiba could've gone on for longer, but they still let it end on the creator's own terms(even after the anime premiered and became a big hit). My Hero Academia also just ended, and Jujutsu Kaisen is supposed to end this year but who the hell knows. At the very least they're a lot better about it than they were back during the Big 3 days(naruto/bleach/one piece), and they're a lot better at letting their creators go on breaks if needed. EDIT: Apparently according to the official JJK twitter, it's ending in 5 chapters. Damn.

Fate/stay night the 2009 anime is an adaptation of the visual novel by TYPE-MOON. It's completely separate from the modern anime and you don't need to watch it. Just watch the Ufotable movies. Fate/zero the anime is an adaptation of the light novel (not VN) Fate/zero which is a canon prequel to Fate/stay night. Fate/Grand Order is a mobile gacha game that uses the Holy Grail War from F/sn as its basis but is afaik its own continuity. It's enormously popular and contributed to the initial gacha boom. "Fate", "Unlimited Blade Works", and "Heaven's Feel" are the names of the three main routes in the Fate/stay night visual novel. Ufotable adapted each route into its own movie with those titles. This is generally considered to be the definitive anime version.

I don't think it's all manga or anime that goes on forever, it's mostly shounen that you guys are talking about. I agree 100% about Naruto, I read through it fully recently and for me, the ending arc was so long and drawn out and the battles weren't nearly as meaningful as when it was just one ninja vs one ninja fighting for what they believe in without being a giant spectacle of energy attacks. The world scaling to fights with alien-gods in the end of Naruto into Boruto is what lost me. If you love Seven Deadly Sins you'll either love or hate Black Clover.

53:05 Code Geass is one of my all time favorite anime and I refuse to watch anything after the R2 end because I've heard there is some retcon going on in the Lelouch of the Resurrection movie and Code Geass has the best ending I can think of in all of fiction, so retcon can only make it worse and I don't want a worse version of Code Geass 😠 I would rather watch a remake version similar to FMA: Brotherhood where they cut out the cat episode and maybe do something different with Rollo

SHOCKED to be agreeing with some of Lando’s anime takes LMAO I think Hunter x Hunter is objectively the best shonen that there is, but I have more fun watching One Piece, so I just like it better! And I’m a Shippuden hater we hate that garbage lmfao

I am a proud naruto hater. I liked the OG stuff, but eventually they stop being Ninjas and just become Japanese-wizards. Like it devolves into Dragon-Ball-Harry-Potter and I just think it's so wack. Also yeah kinda hate the way power-scaling is handled in most Shonen anime. Also regarding Pokémon snap and other "kids games" it's so sad and funny because I GET why games are so "baby mode" for young children, especially today- but still stand by them kids need to figure shit out themselves. My like 3-4 year old neice will grab a controller and not push ANY buttons and be confused why nothing is happening. I won't tell her what to do other than "try the buttons and see what they do" and she will push like, one or two buttons and still not actually experiment with the basic controls. Now I'm kinda a shitty uncle so I'll just leave it at that so they get bored and let me play my games in peace, but still. Much like other things in life I feel like the parents should be there teaching the kids "how to play" and not have the games themselves hold their hand and annoy anyone else who's ever played a game b4 with excessive slow tutorials.
