I have to add another voice to the "Watch Stand Alone Complex" pile, especially if you want to see better characters from this franchise. For as much of a masterpiece as the 1995 film is, it doesn't really adapt the characters' personalities all that faithfully from the original manga (which I also recommend you give a look). Granted, that's because the manga was pretty goofy so they would clash with the tone, but that's what Stand Alone Complex is able to figure out. SAC is kind of like a meeting point between the original manga and the 1995 film, where it's basically a cyberpunk cop show, and the characters are more fun and fleshed out, but it's still has the contemplative nature of the 1995 film. The characters joke around with each other, act like real work buddies, it delves into their personal lives, and they even made sure to retain the fact that Makoto is bisexual. On the other hand, it still is very dense, maybe even more so than the original film, and the pacing is slow and methodical. It also has a bopping soundtrack and great visuals, especially for a tv anime. It's pretty much the best GitS property and has everything you could want. It's also just 2 seasons and a movie, so it isn't a big commitment.

The influence of anime in a lot of hollywood films is really understated. I recently watched Inception and Paprika back to back and it's remarkable how much the former borrows from the latter, at least conceptually.
@thanatos70073 жыл бұрын
That one isn't fair. If you follow the history of Inceptions script you'll find it's actually an adaptation of an adaptation of a Sci-fi novel from the 60s called "Dreammaster" by Roger Zelazny. Hollywood steals a lot of shots and scene compositions from anime, but these concepts aren't unique, they've been around for a long time. Also, it isn't like Holywood is the only thief in this relationship, 95% of all anime is at least a little bit based on either Mad Max or Anne of Green Gables.

It's funny that western cyberpunk did go through Japanese lense to become relevant in the west again somewhat. Because GitS was heavily inspired by the Neuromancer. I mean the ending of this movie is very similar to the Wintermute plot line at the very least.
@r.babylon28853 жыл бұрын
I've met a grandma once who complained about the "flood of foreign cartoons" and how she didn't get it. This was actually the argument I gave her to help her understand. Trigun was inspired by the show Gunsmoke and generally westerns. The most famous westerns were inspired by samurai films. GitS inspired Matrix. She was astounded to hear how Japan has had this back-and-forth with America in entertainment.
@thanatos70073 жыл бұрын
The cyberpunk genre started off steeped in a sort of admiration/fear of Japanese and more broadly "Eastern" cultures. It's called "Orientalism" and it was a big racist thing in the 70s and 80s. A big part of the world building of big cyberpunk touchstones is alienating an English speaking reader by having "The East" becoming the ascendent economic super power, which is an idea that continues to drive a lot of anti-Asian sentiment even today. Cyberpunk overall I think came from a place of admiration rather than fear, but it still painted a world where things are very bad for people, and also Asian people are prominent and powerful, but they aren't intrinsically related. This can be contrasted against a slew of Western action movies from the same period that came from a really hateful or kind of minstrily place, like any Steven Siegal movie with an asian cast member, or 3 Ninjas.
@jormungandthemidgardserpen18453 жыл бұрын
@@thanatos7007 doubt that it is actually true, more like a fancy way of saying "inspired by asian/Japanese cities, culture, technological explosion". Because i know for a fact that cyberpunk is a post-modern phenomenon of science fiction, born out of the desire to subvert the golden age of science fiction. I mean, W. Gibson's sprawl is pretty respectful towards japanese folks. Yes, there are mentions of Yakuza, sararimen and capsule hotels, but western government is far more criticized, for example. Even more than corporations, which are the stereotypical antagonist in cyberpunk.
@thanatos70073 жыл бұрын
Okay, setting aside that I was alive in the 80s, and know what all of the other books and movies were saying at the time. Setting aside that postmodernism is 150 years old, and existing at all times right next to Modernism. I want you to consider for a moment the game Cyberpunk 2077. In the first 4 hours of that game you are asked to steal a doodad from the most powerful entity in the world. An enigmatic Japanese company that is led by what is clearly just Fu Manchu. Fu Manchu is killed before you can speak to him by his son, who is a boisterous tattooed Yakuza. Who then sends very serious men with black suits and tiny sunglasses to assassinate you, along with ninjas. None of this is atypical of the genre.
@jormungandthemidgardserpen18453 жыл бұрын
@@thanatos7007 okay, you were alive in 80s, what does it change? Post-modernism isn't a single case that just happened once and that's it. It keeps happening as old post-modern works become part of modernism. Cyberpunk 2077 is very isolated and unique case. While yes, it is heavily inspired by Gibson's sprawl, it fleshes out completely different topics, themes and stories. The "rule of cool" is there to make the games, both 2077 and 2020 to feel unique and not like typical cyberpunk of that time. And while yes, the main plot of 2077 is about Arasaka, it is isolated case in the entire lore of the universe simply because Johny Silverhand is one of the main protagonists and has a huge beef with Arasaka. The entire 2020 lore does not isolate and villainize Japanese corporations, gangs, etc. There are voodoo, latinos, Chinese and other gangs PLUS variety of other corporations, like Militech or medics(i don't remember the name). And yes, there are cyber ninjas. Because cyber ninjas are cool and the entire game, as i said, is about rule of cool. I can do the same thing. Take last two deus ex games as an example and point my finger at primarily European/American antagonists via illuminati with only one Asian corporation and multiple others, like Sharif industries representing typical western capitalism and corporations. And there are no ninjas, at all.

Ghost in the Shell is, in my mind, peak cyberpunk. Because the dub is great. He's the only one I've heard complaining about the dub so far.
@thanatos70073 жыл бұрын
A bunch of reasons. Dubbing anime is a giant pain in the pooter. Generally speaking the Japanese Studio sells the rights to that work to another company, but has a lot of creative control over how that company can manipulate the footage. So generally they don't want you to mess with the visuals at all, that means no editing new lip flaps like TeamFourStar, no adding repeat frames or slowing the footage or speeding it up (since that messes up secondary and background animations.) So dub actors have to match the vocal cadence of Japanese, which hits it's syllables with a much more clipped and regular pace than English. Given those constraints it still isn't that bad. The LTs voice is particularly jarring for how monotone and disinterested it was, but that's a creative choice that fits the narrative, and contrasts nicely against the much warmer and human vocal presentation of her eventual lover, that was free from the constraints of lip flaps.
@dsaillant8113 жыл бұрын
As terrible as they are, people get really attached to classic dub voices, and re-dubbing opens you up to a lot of controversy. Netflix infamously re-dubbed Evangelion when they added it to their service and was heavily criticized by virtually everybody (myself included).

I got an interesting tid bit of trivia for the production of this film, during the last action climax when the Major is going against the SPIDER TANK. This specific scene has a legendary story behind it. The animator who was tasked with this specific scene was Mitsuo Iso, a very well regarded animator during that time and now a highly regarded director himself. During the prepping phase of this scene, Iso came into the studio with something he caught on the way to work, and it was a spider. His peers noticed him just observing the spider he caught, so that he can use it as a referencial material on how the spider tank would move and articulate... You could def watch that fight over again to see how realistic the movements were for a 8 legged vehicle to move and orient itself through out the fight and thats all that is to ISO's attention to detail. Now on the topic of cyber punk, Iso also directed and helmed a cyberpunk anime called Dennou Coil, which delves into the near future where AR has become seemlessly integrated as smart phones in modern day. Now what's crazy is that he whipped up the concept and idea and compiled it into a pitch around 1999... Dude is ahead of his time, with even the concept of wearable computers only really being delved in sci-fi circles around that time and not really being considered in a widespread way that he has presented in Dennou Coil.

Part 2 is very good. The jitter you noticed is a product of time crunch. Some scenes in anime are given less frames to shorten the drawing time since they have less animators working on it, and short deadlines. You can see this in modern anime as well. You don't see this so much in American 2D animated films from something like Disney because they have a much larger animation crew to fill out the cells for frames, and long deadlines. Even old as heck Disney films are real smooth. But with anime some scenes get the jitter treatment, and still do to this day. Ghost In The Shell is actually an example of an anime that had less jitter than the average anime then, and now.

If you enjoy Ghost in the Shell, definitely check out Perfect Blue. A movie by Satoshi Kon created in a time where you were allowed to do almost anything. Hollywood has taken many inspirations from this film such as Black Swan. It's a movie where multiple viewings will reveal more and more.

The interesting thing about cyberpunk how influencial become at the aesthetic level. "Ghost in the Shell" and "Blade runner" defined a dirty vision of the future. However the subgenre is more about the human condition, and ourt coup with technology and artificial intelligence. I was surprised how many short stories of Phlip K. Dick and Asimov feel like purposly cyberpunk novels.

Btw theres not only a Gits2 theres also an entire Anime series called Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex. Its considered good but its definitely a different type of story, less of a strong planned out narrative and more pulling its strength from some added character development and above all the continued quality of its world and atmosphere.
@CruelDwarf3 жыл бұрын
Also Ghost in the Shell 2 is entirely different story with a focus on a different character. It is quite different but I sincerely recommend it to you especially as you professed preference for slow movies with exposition and world-building.

Western and Eastern media have a intresting relationship, since they tend to inspire each other in a cyclical nature. The most famous example is Samurai and Cowboy movies. Like there's so many examples of were anime is inspired by Western media, history, mythology. And so many examples were Hollywood is isnpired by Ghibli movies, sci-fi anime. It's gonna be intresting to see how that relationship evolves now with anime being as popular as it is, since the next generation of writers most likely will be fans of anime like Attack on Titan, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, etc.

Now that your getting into manga more, would you consider reading the original manga for ghost in the shell? If it helps, you can get the original three manga in a box set. (Occasionally Manga can he hard to track down, especially if it's split into multiple books.)

I hope he does! The original books (comics/manga) are the high point of the franchise, but they've been ignored or forgotten by general audiences. I guess that's understandable, most viewers of any adaptation don't go on to read the books, but the GITS manga definitely needs some more love and appreciation!!

@@lsdeann_3293 What are the other GITS manga like? The ones they made for stand alone complex and arise? At the moment, my main focus is on getting the original three and the second movie.

@@lsdeann_3293I've just ordered the complete hardback of the original manga and I'm planning on getting into Stand alone complex. As of writing this, I finished my first watch of G.I.T.S 2: Innocence about half and hour ago and I'm still processing it.

Big difference in smoothness in older anime vs newer is that the vast majority of current anime has CGI frame work with cell shading (if it isn't entirely CGI and yes I know GitS uses some CGI but that is used sparingly). That is the beauty of "classic" anime is the hand drawn aspect of it and sometimes you see the budget constraints in some scenes where they saved money for the big explosive combat sequences and expansive shots of the scenery. I grew up on 80's and 90's anime and yes there was a lot of crap but the really good ones IMO far outstrip current anime.

one of the most influential anime directors, Satoshi Kon, had instances where Hollywood directors would copy the concepts behind his scenes so blatantly that there was even court cases for it iirc seriously recommend checking his classic films Perfect Blue and Paprika especially

I kind of liked the dub, but then, A) I was an anime fan back when the GitS dub was well above the standard, and B) I'm physically incapable of not liking Richard Epcar, (Batou). I will say Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, who took over the role of the Major for the subsequent sequels, prequels, spin-offs, etc, carries more nuance in her performance. But then it all. Ones to personal preference. Having said that it's nice to hear someone who appreciates the subtlety and atmosphere of slower-pacing when needed. Love to see it!

You can also draw similarities between Serial Experiments Lain and the Matrix. The "men in black" look very similar to the Matrix "Agents" Also, there is a really big film, which I won't say which draws heavily from a certain anime. Like, I can't believe no one has noticed, or if they have I haven't heard about it.

I believe the performances were meant to be robotic because most of the characters are cybernetically enhanced which distanced from their humanity. Though I can understand that may not be some people's cup of tea.

The dub in Stand Alone Complex is an improvement. That series as a whole is great, I like the 1995 film, but SAC goes much deeper with concepts and characters, easily one of the best sci-fi anime I've seen.

My biggest peeve isn't that Hollywood (often times blatantly) borrows things/moments/concepts/ideas from anime (that's just art influencing art), but rather how little recognition or attribution is given to the source material or medium by directors, producers, etc. Though I suppose maybe there are legal/copyright issues they worry about, or maybe they're afraid if they even mention "anime" it'll hurt the marketability of their product because of the stigma still surrounding eastern animation.

Ghost in the Shell has been retold and readapted and sequeled many times and every single entry is very different. I'd approach the different iterations of GitS as closer to Hitchhikers Guide where every entry is intentionally different and may not entirely fit with what came before and may not seem necessary in itself. Quality varies, sometimes pretty greatly, between entries but I kinda appreciate that GitS has almost become something of a canvas for new creators to play with time after time.

I was kinda obsessed with GitS in my teens. It was a movie unlike anything else I had seen before. And it's still so enthralling and beautiful. I would actually recommend you check out the sequel. But temper your expectations. Whatever you expect, it's probably not gonna be that. Don't expect more of the same. For one, Batou is the protagonist and the Major is barely in it. But I still enjoyed it. Also the animation is incredible. GitS2 was the most expensive anime movie ever made, when it came out, I believe, and it shows. It's gorgeous. But when it comes to GitS, you could make the argument that the Stand Alone Complex series is the best incarnation of this story. As someone who was a massive fan of the 1995 movie, I was so excited for the SAC series and was so disappointed at first. The tone is vastly different. The almost philosophical and somber tone of the movie is gone. SAC is much closer to a spy series and police procedural. There's also a lot more humor. And the Major has such a ridiculous outfit in season 1 and all of that turned me off at first. But once I got over that and more into the story, SAC proved itself to be a much deeper look into this world (which should be expected. A 2 season tv show is gonna have more depth than an 80 minute movie). The Major as a character isn't anywhere near as despondent and actually HAS a character instead of just being a vessel to convey concepts with, so you'll like that. The plot is genuinely interesting amazing and tense. I ended up loving season 1 and then season 2 blew my fucking tits off. Season 2 of SAC is probably my favorite thing that has ever come out of the GitS franchise. And Yoko Kanno (Cowboy Bebop, anyone?) did the music for the SAC series, so you know its gonna rip .. and boy, does it.
