Sorry for the lack of book reviews so far this year. I am BINGING The Dandelion Dynasty for a series review which is taking some time. Should be out next week! Didn't know I'd be releasing this the day David Lynch died, but as I said in the video, Twin Peaks is incredible and well worth a watch. If you haven't watched it, please do. Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.

I was *obsessed* with LOST when it originally aired, to the point that I was on fan theory forums, listening to weekly fan podcasts, etc. About halfway through the series, I was doing some freelance work for someone connected to the show (writers’ room) & was basically told flat-out that they’re making it up as they go & had no over all plan. That really took the wind out of my sails for the last few seasons… So yeah… Definitely a ridiculous, nonsensical show when all is said and done, but it had some GREAT moments & characters, and it was a defining experience in its time. Thanks for making this great video! It’s fun to remember the LOST days. ❤

LOST will always have a special place in my heart, and is to me a flawed masterpiece. There are a lot of issues with the characters and the story but the highs are so high. It also was something that I looked forward to every week, going downstairs and watching the new episode with my mom, then listening to this awesome theory podcast about the episodes. I lost my mom about 10 years ago, and LOST will always be a strong connection point to her. Charlie and Jin are the freaking best.

For anyone who has like 20+ hours to spare and wants a deep dive into the story of Lost, I would recommend the series of long form deep dive videos done by Billiam. He goes into a lot of the behind the scenes of why the creators made the decisions they did and it's a pretty good watch
@NotYouNotMe-fw1fh22 сағат бұрын
I think I remember one of the creators saying that when they sat down to discuss a season it was "Ok, let's do a Time Travel season. Let's do a Flash foward season." It was never a plan of, oh this is what we have to do to get to the man in black or Jacob, but rather what thing they wanted to concentrate on that year.
@crabosity11 сағат бұрын
@@NotYouNotMe-fw1fh they knew that eventually there would be a face off with the man in black for the fate of the island they just didn’t completely plan out how they would get there. many later elements were already foreshadowed in earlier seasons they just couldn’t outright show it cuz the network didn’t want it to be scifi

@robbybevard8034Күн бұрын
I think basically any question you could reasonably ask *was* answered though. Sure, some of them the answer boil down to "the island has magical properties" but just about everything was in fact explained.
@robertJ14Күн бұрын
Why do you need everything answered? Its like the Sopranos cut to black. Not knowing is often good. Lost was never a show about the island but about the characters on the island.
@travisspazz1624Күн бұрын
Why tho? Because it's fun!
@Hydralysk44519 сағат бұрын
@@robertJ14 I wouldn't call that a good comparison. The Sopranos ending leaves us with questions about what the future has in store for the characters considering the choices they've made over the series. Lost's ending leaves us with questions about the fundamental rules of the world the characters inhabit, which could be fine, but that's a hard sell when the series was mostly sold as a mystery to untangle. If you give someone a murder mystery, for example, then end the book without satisfactorily explaining who the murderer was and how the murder was committed, a sizeable portion of your audience is going to be (quite understandably) annoyed at the unanswered questions regardless of how much they love the characters in the story.

Lost is one of those shows that was all about the ride. Going back years later and watching it, all of your points are totally valid. But it is still probably the most fun I've ever had watching a show. Particularly S2-S3 era, pre writers strike, where we all still had faith there WERE answers and everything was going somewhere. There was enough crazy shit happening that no theory was too outlandish and you could talk and think about it for hours. It was one of those cultural phenomena that bonded people with nothing else in common together because we all just needed SOMEBODY to hear us out, because this time we DEFINITELY knew what was going on 😂 It did not pay off its promises and is flawed in countless ways, but damn if you were there watching at the time it was such a great experience.
@evan722115 сағат бұрын
It's really disappointing that as a writer, you somehow didn't even touch on how actively fucked Lost got by the writers Strike. Especially when it's the main cause for a lot of the questions going unanswered. They pretty much had to pivot to all new writes half way through season 4.

As a long Lost fan, I agree with a lot of your arguments. However! I have to defend the fandom a little bit. Yes, I agree that the fandom can be hostile towards people who didn't like the show. But there is a reason for it. You mention that the fandom very often brushes off all criticism with "oh that's cause you weren't paying enough attention" and that's absolutely true. But have you seen the amount of people who actually DIDN'T pay attention to the show? Like the "they were dead the whole time" thing at the end. Yes, it should've been explained more clearly at the end there, but also Jack's dad literally says "everything that happened happened". He literally says that the island was all real and they weren't dead the whole time. And yet you have thousands of people coming to the Lost subreddit complaining that the show sucks because they were dead the whole time. Explaining that this is not the case is simple in the first few cases, but when you see that argument for the 1000th time, you just become frustrated. You no longer want to have a normal rational discussion, instead you immediately go into "oh this shit again" mode and become hostile. I'm not defending that behavior, the fandom still shouldn't act like that and should just be kind to people who have questions. I'm just saying that I can understand how an aggressive reaction like that can appear naturally.

That they more so represent fate in a way? jacob knows which seats his candidates will be on,so he uses those numbers to make things happen as the way they should. hurley hears the numbers, uses them, gets rich and flys on the plane that crashes. Plus the bunker explodes sending people back in time because no one entered the numbers. Bad things sure, but things that are meant to happen.

Damon Lindelof had a pretty illuminating interview a few years ago where he said that the network wouldn’t even let them start a conversation about when the show would end until season 3, which is why it spun its wheels and introduced SO many mysteries. I think Lost ultimately suffers from being the first show of its kind that told an overarching narrative instead of an episodic one.

Watched this when it aired week-to-week, again on DVD with my wife years later, and now about halfway through streaming it with our kids. I am all-but-certain that the purgatory theory was the original plan. Somewhere around the end of S3 the producers got nervous that so many fans had caught on to the big "final reveal," and demanded the writers go back to the drawing board to come up with a new ending. For just one example: Eko's death is so poignant and satisfying if you interpret it as him "earning" his final destination in his scene with the monster when he accepts and forgives himself for his life choices. Lots more examples of how well it fits--as long as you stop before S4.

One important thing I think is worth mentioning, especially regarding the thought lost should be shorter and tighter: The showrunner, and I'm sure writers would agree with you. They wanted to end the show earlier, but the network wouldn't let them discuss an ending because the ratings were too good. That and I'm guessing the pressure of tv scheduling lead to a lot of not great or repeating character moments and wheel spinning

I watched Lost contemporaneously and was very active in the message boards at the time in theorycrafting. You really need to watch it and think about it as two shows: one pre writers strike and another post writers strike. You’re right in pointing out that plot lines and reveals were set up, planned, then seemingly dropped, but you miss the context of that happened because all new writers were now staffing the project. Watching the show pre writers strike without the burden of the post writers strike is amazing. Just treat it as a Netflix show that got cancelled and forget the second half happened.

Sure, there were some, like Twin Peaks, that attempted it, but even that show was widely considered a financial failure at the time. The fact that LOST ended up even half as good as it did is a massive testament to the time and effort that went into making it. Also, I don't think you can entirely fault the writers for a lot of its shortcomings as many of the problems were caused by things outside of their control. Mr Eko, for instance, was intended to have a multi-season arc and play a huge part in the rest of the show, but the actor just didn't want to be on the show anymore, so all those carefully laid out story lines had to be reworked. There was Libby, who in my opinion has possibly the biggest unanswered mystery in the show, whose actress got into some real-life drama and was also written out early. Not to mention the massive amount of network interference you know was going on. It feels like Daniel is looking at the storytelling of this show through the lens of a novel writer, but it isn't comparable from a level of control side. Yes, the show has flaws, but I don't think these writers get enough credit for creating such an intriguing and successful show when there was so much riding against them. If you go down the rabbit hole of looking at what most of these writers went on to create later on, it is impressive and speaks to the level of talent that existed in the LOST writers room at the time.

There are lots of irrational laughs caused by LOST's writing, but one of my favorites is when Jack's dad, Christian Shephard (yes, really), guides them to the afterlife. Christian. Shephard.

YEEEES, the needless character drama!! This is what eventually turned my husband and I off of the show. Definitely was a fun ride though. Love this review, some good, thoughtful points made.

If the man in black can mimic dead people who have died on the island, then how was able to transform into Walt? he's not dead or on the island anymore

Great video. I still love Lost, and I love it for the characters. I felt the final season did wrap up the characters well and was a fitting goodbye for them. In terms of the lore and overall plot it doesn't hang together, but I can look past that. I think I the writers have been pretty clear that they knew they were writing themselves into corner which is why they had to go and ask the studio to let them end it. There's an anecdote about the pilot, that whilst filming it JJ Abrams said to Damon Lindelof that it would be cool if they found a hatch buried in the jungle, Lindelof said that was a cool idea and asked what was in the hatch, JJ told him that he didn't know it was Lindelofs job to explain it. This sums up the mystery box approach to the show. The mystery is more important than the answer. Given his own tv show though Damon Lindelof has created some fantastic series like The Leftovers and Watchmen which are well worth watching!

The Pilot was incredible, and I really enjoyed the first season, but when I missed an episode in season 2, I kinda spotted caring immediately, never watching it again.

You forgot that randomly Sawyer reads watership down. I think there is supposed to be something about that it parallels the survivors and their journey. Haha not sure but I see there was a point to putting that book in the narrative.

I heard that the ending and the whole explanation behind the island's mystery was supposed to be based not on the waterfall/river, but on a volcano but the network refused the idea due to budget constraints. So, they had to re-write the plot and hence the cluster fuck that it ended up being.
