Another great video thanks , 35 plus years without a chain checking tool, now i've just ordered 1 .

Useful vid as usual Dave, cheers. Can’t believe more people don’t have a chain checker tool as they cost so little, and the latest generation 12-speed cassettes are so expensive to replace when worn.

My Eagle X01 jump shifts even after adjusting everything properly - chain is in mint condition - cassette and front sprocket not too sure - have the feeling the previous owner just kept on replacing the chain w/o looking at the other components and even after 20 years I'm unable to properly eyeball the state of aforementioned components for excessive wear so will bite the bullet and order chain, cassette and front sprocket -- thx for sharing

Sram eagle can be such a fiddle, they like everything to be square and in line, and its so expensive especially the cassettes. work jockey wheels can be a big issue especially the top guide one, b gap needs to be just right and it differs on different bikes.

Dave, I’d like to make a suggestion that you consider changing the checker you use, or at least include using it along with the other one. The one you should try is the Pedro’s Chain Checker II plus. This tool allows you to check the chain for its true lengthening, by taking roller wear out of the equation. (Worn rollers do not contribute to chain lengthening). Using this method will give a truer indication of chain wear. Worn rollers can affect things when they get bad enough, but typically a cassette and chainring will handle them well. It’s the pin/bore wear that usually causes the real problem.

What happened to the drive side washer ? Doesn't look like it was on the spindle or the BB ? No mention of the poor thing ! Thanks for a nice slow video - too many maintenance videos go too fast to really explain why some things are needed
@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and your comments, it was on the spindle as it came out of the bb.

I had read (on the sram website? or maybe saw another video?) where they said you needed to compress the shock before measuring the chain out (which i think lengthens the chain path) When I did this, the next bike shop I went to said my chain was too long.
@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, you need just enough chain length to keep the rear mech under tension. That applies to any bike except fox wheel and hub based gears, follow this method and you will always get it right.

Great stuff Dave 👍. How often would you replace the pulley sprockets on the derailleur?

Hi, thanks for watching. You may find that the bearings in the jockeys will wear faster than the plastic, a new set of bearings will refresh them, at the moment new jockey wheels for eagle are very difficult to find.

Hi, check each component to make sure its solid and works ok. I will make an effort to wear gloves.

So i have a question that most people dont ask about, its the chain link do these stretch aswell or can u reuse these or do they have to be thrown away its a pretty obviouse question im asking but iv never hearad of anybody chaingin it after replacing a chain with a new one, i know most chains come with a new one and it shud be changed but does it ?????
@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic2 жыл бұрын
Hi Tony, Thanks for watching and your comments. I always use the new link when fitting a new chain, it should always be changed and the old chain and link sent for re-cycling

Do you need to de grease a new chain and put your own lube on it or just assume its comes from the factory properly pre lubed ?
@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic2 жыл бұрын
New chains come already lubricated
@rattila132 жыл бұрын
@@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic The purpose of the factory lube is to keep it from corroding, other than that it's a terrible lube, it's very high friction, it attracts dirt and keeps dry lubes from adhering to the chain. At the very least, factory lube should be removed from the outside of the chain so dirt doesn't stick to it as much.

If you think he's just trying to take money off you.... he's right. I changed a heavily worn chain (off the charts) which surprisingly working just fine but it snapped a link. New chain was just skipping everywhere!

All these symptoms are from debris ... Which a precision machine element such as roller chain SHOULD NEVER BE EXPOSED TO This kind of manufacturing is wasteful dereliction... They've BSed us into believing that the extra maintenance is worth the weight savings Akin to trading a proper lifespan for dramatic excess ...🧐🧐🧐
