Ghost Train: Harrogate to Pateley Bridge (Lost Yorkshire Railways Animation)

A look at the lost Nidd Valley railway line that once linked Harrogate to Pateley Bridge! It ran from Ripley Junction, on the Harrogate to Ripon Line, to Pateley Bridge via five intermediate stations, Ripley Valley, Hampsthwaite, Birstwith, Darley, and Dacre. The last scheduled passenger train ran on 31 March 1951 but the line remained open for goods until 30 October 1964.
The old line northwards from Harrogate to Ripley has been converted into a bridleway for walkers, horses and cyclists as Nidderdale Greenway. The entire line up to Pateley Bridge (and beyond on the Nidd Valley Light Railway), has also been proposed to be converted into a greenway.

Excellent animation work interesting to see if an area I know well, much of the narrow gauge track bed from Pateley Bridge station up to the reservoirs still exist also. Given the amount of tourism to Pateley Bridge, I would imagine should the track from Harrogate still exist it would be now very well used.

In about 1957 i attended Bewerley Park Camp (Summer) School which was run by the West Riding County Council with the HQ in Wakefield. It covered outdoor pursuits like running, kayaking and cricket and was great fun. I recall my parents came on a visit by train as my father was a signaller at was then a very busy raiilway at Knottingley.

This is one of those rare lines you can follow and observe from the roads to pateley bridge, sadly it was just a branch off a main line to the north that beeching shut. But, there are plans to open the entire length from Ripley to pateley bridge as a walking/cycling path.

@@smithric The plans were first muted by Harrogate Borough Council, obviously parts of the line are now in private hands but surveys were carried out and an initial route was proposed. However H.B.C. no longer exists and all planning is conducted from Northallerton. Money obviously plays a part. A running commentary in parts on this can be found by archive copies of the Harrogate Examiner and I believe there is or was a Nidd valley action group on this subject.
