Lyrically, "Twenties" appears to be a cheeky foreshadowing of what people thought the 1920s would be like (prosperous for all) without knowing all the horrors that were coming right around the corner (the Great Depression, World War II, etc.). Here, it seems like Ghost mastermind Tobias Forge is using that historical context as an analog for the present day, as we're entering the 2020's with a whole new stack of uncertainties.

What? People entered the 1920s with optimism and, over all, it was an incredibly prosperous time period. The Great Depression wasn’t until 1929 and World War 2 didn’t begin until 1939. There’s a reason why it’s called The Roaring Twenties. We entered the 2020s with a completely different mindset than humans did a century ago. TL;DR The 1920s were awesome.

The interesting thing about this song.. I can tell the rest of the album will be amazing. This song gives me the vibes of an amazing non-single yet it was ironically released as a single. Tobias promised the new album to be around as heavy as Meliora but differently, he said it will be dark, riff oriented and will have no ballads. All have been true so far. Also I've noticed hes moved from the very compact hook ridden songs and started writing more proggy multi-layered songs. I think this can be explained by the fact hes had so much time to write this album. The previous ones have been written, recorded and released between tours, now hes had nearly 2 years to make this album.

Dimmu Borgir might have tried something similar a decade ago. The context isn't the same but there's a similarity. The overall difference is that they play in a niche genre, I guess, and this is pop. I'm speaking of course about their album 'Abrahadabra'. Nothing new under our shared sun.

"It's like trying on a new pair of underwear; at first it's constricting, but soon it becomes a part of you" I had moments like these in every album/release prior to this song, at least as far back as when Meliora came out I'm rather digging the sonic direction of this; the arrangement is tight as fuck and a perfect pacebreaker for what I've heard from the album so far. The lyrics are so over-the-top and hand-over-fist that I can't help but dig the cheesiness of it. It'll take some more time to digest but I do simply enjoy it. I'm interested in seeing how it fits in the context of the rest of the album when it drops.
@suitsandstrings552 жыл бұрын
Perfectly stated. I keep having that "I'm not sure I like this one as much as the last album" but with an open mind by the end of the song I find myself wanting more. Tobias and his crew have a creativity that has been missing from metal for a while.
@neuralmute2 жыл бұрын
I'm loving the blatant parody of current authoritarian trends in politics (and the sorts of people who support them...) in the lyrics a whole lot! And the music has the energy of some sort of deranged cabaret show, which probably isn't surprising, since Tobias has always pulled influence from musical theatre, and Cabaret is one of the best musicals with a warning about decadent lives being steamrolled by an authoritarian regime out there. He's hitting hard with this one, and keeping it fun at the same time. I cannot wait for this full album!

I know a lot of people don't love Tobias' vocal performance here, but what he's portraying is a money-hungry, power-tripping, repulsive character who can't ever get enough. The fact that some people are put off by it means it's working, imho. This song is supposed to be arrogant, theatrical and a bit delirious; it's doing an incredibe job at it. So damn good.
