It should be noted that Harold Ramis' daughter talked at length in her book that one of her last, treasured memories of her father was him crying laughing at Bridesmaids, that she hated hearing fans suggest that he would not have liked the 2016 movie, and that she felt it was disrespectful when fans tried to act like the movie was an insult to his memory. Maybe that's not what you meant, but in any case, I would like to think he would have appreciated both movies.

If you're late 30's early 40's, growing up with the toys and the animated series and the films made it a part of you. Seeing Egon at the end hits so hard when you think of how long it has gone on for. I mean it's pushing 40 years and seeing more ghostbusters just brings it all back. It's sad Harold Passed away, but we got the great ghostbusters video game which many said was like a third movie, and now this. I'm glad this was made.

Mid 20's here - can say the same - growing up with Ghostbusters was great, and the movie was easily the most emotional one of 2021 for me, hit me hard again even watching the reaction here :D As for Ghostbusters: The Video Game (2009 one, since there are a few different games in the series) - it literally had Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis on the writing team (ideas for third movie were added into story) and all of the original Ghostbusters actors playing their roles again :D

I cried when Egon's daughter saw the pictures in the basement and I cried like a baby the moment they showed him helping his granddaughter to the "For Harold" text. Me, my brother, and my mom used to pretend we were Ghostbusters when we were kids. They're the reason why I started loving to read, because the three of us would check out stacks of ghost/supernatural books at the local library and read them all.

This movie is how a sequel for a movie from the 1980s should be done, lots of call backs without overdoing the nostalgia but also making it it's own identity. And the honoring of Harold Ramis, especially with his ghost helping his granddaughter was SO well done 😍. I loved it 🥰
@Johnny_Socko
@Johnny_Socko 2 жыл бұрын
I think one of the reasons it succeeds is not only because it was a good sequel, but just the overall style of writing and filmmaking was a throwback to 80s movies, where a bunch of curious kids get into some adventures and face real dangers. There is something about that formula that always connects (when it's done well).

Definitely an excellent addition to the franchise they had a lot of time to work on it so I wasn't surprised. And I'm sure that everyone got teary at the end, a really great send off to a really iconic character and actor, they really didn't hold back on the emotional aspect. Much respect to Jason Reitmen for dedicating this to the late Harold Ramis. Additionally for those who didn't know Bob Gunton, the warden from Shawshank, played the old Egon Spengler at the beginning of the film. Great reaction Daniel and Samantha! 8/10

Great film! As a huge Ghostbusters fan, the game from few years back is definitely part 3, with this being the 4th entry! But as a game designer/dev with friends/associates at the studio, illfonic’s new game that just came out (Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed) is considered part 5! While lighter on story, it features Ray and Winston, and starts IMMEDIATELY after the end credits scene of this movie. They are huge fans over there, and they did the series justice (from a story-light, but total fan appreciation standpoint) 🙂😊👻

I actually came here all this time later to mention this, extremely pleased to see it was already here! Didn't Aykroyd himself say it was 'essentially the third movie'? I was 47yrs old in 2009. But I had an xBox 360 (ex-racing driver using Forza as 'methadone'), so I bought the game, played it, and loved it. So for me, "Afterlife" is the 4th movie, too. I'll have to check out Illfonic's new one. On the film itself, I heard a lot of people complaining it was just fan service for GB fans. I just told them I * am * one, and I felt well-served.

The perfect sequal after all these years, so happy a new one is coming too. i was down with it when they said that Jason Reitman is doing it with guidance from Ivan Reitman and when they announced McKenna Grace was the lead i knew this was in safe hands acting wise. shes the biggest talent in hollywood right now, has been for years already despite her young age. The Family of Harold Ramis worked closely with the Filmmakers to get him right and to do his character justice and i believe Jason and Ivan Reitman said that if they wouldnt get the families apporoval of what they were planning, they would have just cancelled the movie in the planning stages. The moment his ghost hand appeared on Phoebes Protonpack my eyes immediatly teared up in the cinema and when he joined the original Ghostbusters Lineup one last time, i lost it and just cried.

You may not remember, but Ivo Shandor was mentioned in the original film as the architect of Dana apartment building, along with the selenium cores of the girders. I love how everyone just skips over the remake. It's not even in the box set. Meanwhile, this film is already getting a sequel. Hopefully the original cast shows up in that one, too.

After I saw the film, which I really liked, I had an idea for the climax when Egon's ghost comes back and just thinking about it gave me goosebumps. They brought back Egon (Harold Ramis) very convincingly and so well and he didn't say a word. He probably didn't need to and maybe they didn't want to recreate Ramis' voice. However, if he had said anything I would'be had him say to the rest of old Ghostbusters: "See you on the other side, guys." That works as a callback to the original and it's hims saying he'll be reunited with his best friends (and family) in the afterlife. I think that could've been a great moment and totally a cry moment.

Just a masterclass in how to do a sequel. Fan service, easter eggs, moves the story forward, honors the original, and brings closures to the story, the franchise, and the fans. The final tribute to Harold was just perfectly done.

I'm so glad you two enjoyed Ghostbusters: Afterlife. I saw this movie three times in the first two days. My girlfriend couldn't believe how good it was and she told me for hours heading home that I was right and thanked me for taking her to see it. I was looking forward to this movie ever since my mother took me to see Ghostbusters II but we never got a third movie for so many years. At the time the 2009 video game was our third movie that then continued into the IDW Publishing comic books but now that story isn't cannon anymore but it's still really good. I highly recommend playing Ghostbusters The Video Game from 2009.

This is how you continue a franchise. Sure there was some fan service but I felt it paid respect to the OG while doing it's own thing.

One of the reasons this worked visually is that there was relatively minimal use of CGI outside of the obvious (Egon's ghost, the marshmallow minis, etc). The proton beams were hand-animated just like in the first 2 movies, and the terror dogs were real physical props that really could move. Mckenna Grace did an amazing job emulating Harold Ramis' mannerisms. That was a super impressive performance by a young actress. I'm happy that her, Podcast, Trevor, and Lucky are all confirmed back for the sequel (which started filming March of 2023 and is supposed to be out by the end of 2023).

In case no one has pointed it out. Ghost Busters 3 was delayed in production hell. then Harold Ramis died. So, Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters director’s) son Jason directed this movie as a kind of passing of the torch. Plus a slight sequel that never happened because of Ramos passing.

The big important things to realize about this movie are that Harold Ramis died in 2014. He had sort of a falling out with the other guys, and they never really talked again for like 30 years. Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd wrote the original movies. Ivan Reitman directed the original movies. This movie was directed by Jason Reitman, Ivan's son. Jason was the original Ghostbusters fan. He grew up on the set of the original movies, and saw it all before the movies ever even came out in theaters. Jason also played the annoying little kid in Ghostbusters 2 who mocks the Ghostbusters at the birthday party. Jason Reitman is a pretty successful director in his own right, but as an indie movie director. This is the first big franchise movie that he ever made. And it's the only time he ever worked with his father. They made this movie together. This movie was done a year or two before it was released, but it was delayed in release due to the pandemic. A few months after Afterlife was released in theaters, earlier this year, Ivan Reitman himself passed away. Ivan Reitman is also the one who plays Egon in this movie - standing in for his old friend Harold, who passed away in 2014. So this movie is Jason Reitman's first and final project with his father, his way of honoring his father's work, their way of honoring Harold Ramis and the original Ghostbusters, and it ended up being a swan song for Ivan Reitman himself. This movie means a crazy amount more than anybody really expected it to. Every time I see the ending of this movie it punches me in the gut. I get the impression that Jason Reitman only really intended to make this one Ghostbusters movie. Because, like I said, he's more of an indie director and kind of likes to do his own thing. But this movie was obviously very successful, and Sony is a movie studio that can basically never get anything right, so this movie is kind of a miracle for them. They've also established Ghost Corps, kind of a whole branch of Sony Pictures dedicated to developing Ghostbusters. And Jason Reitman seems to now more or less be the head of it. As this ending implies, the Ghostbusters head back to New York City. Ghostbusters 4 has already been confirmed and announced with a release date that I believe is next Christmasish, and it's confirmed that it will take place in New York once again, and it's confirmed that Jason Reitman will return to direct. It seems that Jason has now embraced and adopted his father's legacy as his own to keep his father's legacy alive. I say all of that partially to emphasize the insane planet-sized solid steel balls that Jason and Ivan Reitman had in daring to resurrect Egon Spengler in this movie. It was playing with nuclear fire. It was a move so ready to go catastrophically horrifically wrong if they fucked it up even slightly. It would have been seen as horrifically disrespectful and it would have infuriated a PLANET full of Ghostbusters fans. The fact that they pulled it off so fucking perfectly and elegantly in a way that makes me cry every goddamn time I see this movie. And I've seen it like probably nine times now..... It's a miracle. It's something that SHOULD NOT work. The fact that they made it work somehow is mind-boggling. And, hell, let's not forget to recognize that this movie was carried almost entirely by a 13-year-old girl. Obviously, she was backed by a cast of Amazing side characters - Podcast, her brother, her mom, Paul Rudd, the original Ghostbusters, JK Simmons as Ivo Shandor, and Olivia Wilde as Gozer.... They were all amazing and perfect.... ....But McKenna Grace, as Phoebe, carried like 80% of this movie. When Paul Rudd and Podcast were around, and even a lot of times with her mom and brother, she was always the/a main character. She also wrote and performed the song that plays over the credits with the ghost in the haunted house. The movie was supposed to come out, but then it got delayed and during the delay she basically started a music career, and the song was so good that they went back and put it in the movie before it finally got released. So McKenna Grace is basically another miracle that this movie pulled off. Because child actors are pretty hit and miss as it is. But even the REALLY good ones can rarely carry something basically by themselves. As a side note, I think they just announced a new Ghostbusters animated series and a Ghostbusters animated movie at the same time that they announced Ghostbusters 4. So Ghost Corps seems to be going into overdrive now, and we are hopefully about to return to '80s levels of Ghostbusters goodness. It really cannot be overstated how much of a PHENOMENON Ghostbusters was. People do not understand how big the Ninja Turtles were in the 80s and early 90s. It was like the Beatles. It was like Pokémon. It was all consuming and everywhere. And to a only very very slightly lesser degree, so was Batman and so was Ghostbusters. The three of them basically ruled the late 80s and early 90s. But yeah, anyhow, if you want to watch the 2016 movie, I'm on board to watch your reaction. I don't hate it. I just wouldn't say it's particularly good. I also wouldn't say it's particularly bad. It's just kind of something that exists for some reason. An odd sort of waste of time. Kind of a glimpse into what Ghostbusters could have been if made by people who didn't really know what they were doing. A version of Ghostbusters made by people who weren't comedic geniuses. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Also, you are completely right that Ivo Shandor is played by JK Simmons, and yes, Gozer is played by an uncredited Olivia Wilde. It's absolutely wild to me that she's not credited for this.... Like...what? She's PERFECT. 🤷🏻‍♂️

To be clear, Ivan stood in for Harold one time. Most of the performance is Bob Gunton, who played the warden in Shawshank Redemption.

Corrections: Harold only had a falling out with Bill Murray after they both worked on "Groundhog Day". Jason and Ivan's first collaboration as director and producer was the George Clooney dramedy, "Up In The Air". It earned some Oscar nominations. Their last collaboration was a short film called "Saving Simon" for the Apple IPhone.

That Ghostbusters game was created from the script that was originally supposed to be a third movie. I haven't played it since it first came out in 2009, so I don't know whether it is technically still canon now that this film is out... but I do remember thinking it was really fu@#ing good at the time.

I have said this many times.... to me (even the first time i saw it in cinema) Rays "Im sorry", Peters "I knew you would turn up" and Winstons "I should have called" wasnt said to Egons ghost. It was Dan, Bill and Ernie saying "Sorry Harold, we should have done this, while we had time."
