I personally, from listening to the great jazz players, believe that "ghost" notes were not intentional. They happened by accident. I think that when playing some passages, they had to make quick adjustments to reach the next note, either due to fingering position, breathing, phrasing, etc. It was while playing a fast phrase, I realised that, unless I gave less importance to the previous note, I wouldn't have landed on the next note on time, and I accidentally ghosted it.

Interesting. Thanks. I think it’s more to do with emulating the human voice.

Can I suggest more emphasis of synonyms used in music? For example as you noted, this is sometimes called other things. My sax teacher calls this muted tonguing. Many call ghosting notes a bad thing because they're talking about when someone isn't nailing the notes completely so that's what really threw me - I thought this was going to be on how not to ghost notes LOL.

Ha! Well hopefully you learned something anyway? It’s certainly the first time anyone has requested I do more synonyms! 🤣

Nice phrases. Are there alto backing tracks as well? Sound matters! 🙂
@GetYourSaxTogetherАй бұрын
Em, no. If you mean the demos, just tenor. Exactly the same on alto though.

those moving up their sound to be able to play ghost notes are likely at a stage where they have just gotten their voicings together

Difficult task. When I try the roll out lips plus put my tongue on the reed my underlip becomes stiff. And my teeth start to slide on the mouthpiece.And automatically I put bigger pressure on the mp.

I find this a little confusing, as I was taught to accent the off-beats when playing jazz quavers. Is this wrong?
@GetYourSaxTogether27 күн бұрын
Well I’d say this - what happens in the music you love listening to? Analyse it.
@mawneyman27 күн бұрын
@@GetYourSaxTogether Thanks for the reply - I thought you might say that! When I listen to Parker he does seem to be accenting a lot of off-beats but I dunno - the more I listen the more confused I get! I’m still working on it though…

@@mawneyman the original music had all the answers you need. After a while you’ll do it intuitively.

@@GetYourSaxTogether Digressing a little I know but I’ve always wondered what they did in the old days - keep lifting the needle off the record and putting it back a couple of millimetres? Or were they so immersed in the music that they could just naturally echo what they heard other players doing?

What means "RT" on the sheet?
@MathewDalton-e6p2 ай бұрын
Short for Release Tongue. It is a notation to show when you are removing your tongue from the reed directly after a half tongued note.
