The reflection said in a oddly soothing voice. I nod yes, and then things got weird. Literally reaching through the mirror, the reflection cupped its hand on my face. The touch was both cold and warm at the same time. "Ah, I remember what it was like to be young." The reflection's hand found its way to the top of my head and gave it a gentle pat. I want to be creeped out, but somehow I can't. "Wide-eyed, curious about the world, making stories they insist are real." The reflection said. "Who are you? What are you?" I asked the girl in the mirror. The reflections gives small laugh. "Who I am and what I am are irrelevant. What matters is that I intend to make your dreams a reality." Now the girl's hand is on my arm and I am being pulled through the mirror. On the other side, the room has now become a dark red landscape with creepy looking eyeballs everywhere. The reflection has now been replaced with an older looking woman with a parasol in hand. "Where are you taking me?" I ask the strange lady. The lady laughed in response. "Now you ask the right questions. I am taking you to a world one can only dream about, a world I call: Gensokyo." Gensokyo? Was that the place I was dreaming of? The mystery lady tapped her parasol on the ground and now the red has been replaced with white. "I hope it's all you dreamed of, Maribel Hearn..."

I personally think Merry is Yukari from an alternate universe,where she herself didnt understand her power,sometimes even activating it uncounciously in her dreams,going to unknown worlds,she doesnt understand the full capacities of her own power,thus remaining human. Maribel often traveled through time in her dreams. Her memento was found in the Bamboo Forest of the Lost in Gensokyo. The condition it was in suggested that it was hundreds of years old, older than Gensokyo itself. It’s easy to assume that she travelled a thousand years into the past while dreaming, her ability evolved, and she awakened into another time. She would then go on to become Yukari and create Gensokyo.

First, yes, I believe Maribel is, through timey-wimey shenanigans, Yukari's past self. I also kind of imagine this song to Renko finding that out, if only for the beginning. Not so much in the manner of fearing Merry will eat her like any youkai would, but more so in the implications of being forcibly separated from her best friend/potential lover and living with that for 1,400 years, not to mention becoming functionally immortal. Of course, being that guy, I imagine they could work out a happily ever after together, but I know people like imagining the angst of a mortal lover dying. Then again, we have Keine for that when someone doesn't spike her drink with Hourai Elixir...

Meribel has to be yukari, all the signs point to it. Firstly the reference to lafcadio hearn who changed his last name to yakumo upon traveling abroad, and Secondly through the character design and abilities of both yukari and meribel. since its implied that the gensokyo of meribel's time is in ruins.... My personal take is that at a certain point, meribel travels to the past and becomes yukari yakumo, attempting to save gensokyo from whatever catastrophe brought its demise.

Adrian Tepes Although the mentioning of "scientific" to this song now makes this song feel like there's some sort of portals to other dimensions or ancient relics having functional properties and being weapons of mass destruction in a futuristic setting. The first parts however are reminiscent of a girl totally insane and unable to decide which is real life and which is just a dream, so she asks her best friend to decide. Wait, more than half of this is part of Maribel's story :P

@Lazy Ketchup What a twist it would be if really Marisa = Maribel = Yukari. It is not quite an outlandish theory. In the PC-98 era, Marisa's outfit is purple. Out of everyone in Gensokyo, Yukari and Marisa have the most notorious reputations of burglaries. Technicalities aside, it really does leave one wonder these implications ZUN is leaving out.

Uhh, I have a question: is there any relevance in reading the mangas besides the new characters and interesting tidbits about the regular characters from the games (it doesnt seem much in context, I know, but you can easily find these informations in the wiki so that`s why I am asking)? If so, where can I find a way to read them? I am kinda curious to know more about the manga-only characters and to see if there is anything interesting that comes within the mangas too. Heck, I only know about the Three Mischievous Fairies (Luna Child, Sunny Milk and Star Sapphire) and Kasen because of Great Fairy Wars and Urban Legend in Limbo (and the wiki), since I mostly look at the games, so my knowledge about the characters outside the games is very limited. Also, did anyone else come here from Touhoumon? Just started playing World Link so that`s why I am asking about that.

+Ultimate Zero42 You can read most of, if not all the manga on Bato.to. You have to make an account, which is relatively painless. And yes, I would HIGHLY recommend reading the mangas. Since the games themselves can't really show too much plot due to the fact that it's a bullethell, the mangas take the role of expanding that plot, which is why the Touhou world is rich with story and detail. Although there isn't really too much a particular order in reading them, I'd say Silent Sinner in Blue, Wild and Horned Hermit, and Forbidden Scrollery are all the best ones in my opinion.
