Also ; for contemporary audiences it may be difficult to imagine the impact this play made at the time ( 1882 ) and in the society / culture norms of 19th century Norway. Ibsen truly was a Giant ..

A pure masterclass cast wow. Superb bravo. Can you imagine being so afraid what society thinks that you live in misery.

Ibsen is one of my fave's. He shone a spotlight as big as the sun on the hypocracy of his time. His subject matters were considered shocking. I hated that pastor too until I remembered the period; he was a lemming of his time too. It is Mrs Alving that is ahead of her time, as was Nora in The Doll's House. And paid the price for it.

The music played during the scene transitions is Schoenberg's Verklärte Nacht, Op.4. It is an early work by Schoenberg, before he went all dissonant and got into the 12 tone technique...

Can't resist echoing the words of others : this is Acting the like of which we experience very few times in our lives .Actors such as these spent years in Rep honing their skills and techniques . Our present crop I'm afraid has not undergone the same apprenticeship. . I regret to say that the results are all too obvious in both Radio and TV drama ! This WAS a Golden Age...!

Great drama. Wont get on my soapbox about life in that era, or men's opinions of women, and what composed a PROPER female. We've come a long way 😁👍since then. As for preacher man, I'd probably give him a bad time just to be ornery, then showed him the door with my boot on his posterior. 🤭😁👍

The way this priest talks would be enough to turn one into an atheist. I'm afraid I would kick him out the door.

Time and place these things must be understood in order not to jump on the we hate all pastors band wagon because he does not represent all pastors the church held great power and influence unfortunately they abused the power instead of showing mercy and grace too many did the opposite while living corrupt lives but I know some excellent pastors who serve the people and do great credit to the body! We cannot say this about this busy messy pastor judge each on the content of their character

I expect the excellent photography was largely due to expert lighting of the set. Very bright lighting of her face.....gradual gray to deep shading of the background and the rest of the scene. Wonderful, really.
