My god, studios really know how to F**K up a movie, don't they? I wouldn't care if this movie was 7 hours long...how Buddy magically re-appeared as been eating at me since I saw this movie in the theatre when it first came out. So happy I came across this video. I love the Deleted Scenes. My Cousin played Loretta, who was Cletus’s daughter. The Final Cut has her in the movie but all of her speaking lines were cut out. It’s nice to see her deleted scenes where she gets to speak. I was 6 years old when it came out and everyone always wanted to talk to me because “my cousin was in Hoosiers.”

Buddy's disappearance and return was obviously the one huge plot hole the deleted scenes address. Even in the 1950s some states had very stiff rules about transfers, usually you had to sit out a whole school year unless your parents actually moved their family address to the new school district. So Buddy could not just decide one morning he wanted to go to Terhune instead of Hickory. So there definitely needed to be better explanation of Buddy walking out and then magically reappearing. Restoring the deleted scene does that.

It's also revealed in the deleted scenes that Buddy is the son of George (Chelcie Ross) which sheds a little new light on George's role as interim/assistant coach -- and also, Buddy's return to assume, essentially, the role of point guard, who is usually the on-court leader of the team.

That's what struck me as well (although it's 'Witness'). 'Hoosiers' was released only a year after 'Witness', so maybe this scene wouldn't have had the impact it otherwise would and just reminded audiences of the earlier film.

SEVERAL OF THSE DELETED SCENES REALLY ADDS TO THE STORYLINE. AS SUGGESTED, A DIRECTORS CUT OR RUNNING THIS AFTER THE END WOULD BE NICE. NOW I'M GOING TO DO IT.

I had seen it several times before it came out on DVD back in the day but when it did the first thing I went to was the deleted scenes looking for one that showed how Buddy came back.

You both made a great movie that will live forever. These scenes that were deleted (that we see here which is cool) were the right choices to make. If they were in, maybe the movie wouldn't be as great as it was? You could have had another player get kicked out or off the team and not came back (instead of Buddy in the beginning), and always had Buddy there?

So the theatre can get extra viewings. Always about the money. You can't charge 50 % more for a 3 hour movie. Thats why you never see the long version of Cleopatra at movie theatre. Taking a 4 hour movie down to 3 12

Thank you. I've wanted to see these missing scenes for a long time. The European DVD release doesn't contain them. Hershey was great in her scenes, which is why her getting reduced to a minor character in the film's second half was so disappointing. Also, where is the scene that explains why Hackman is so angry about the player's school change (11.30). There are obviously more missing scenes.

I feel like they could have cut the bus scene where "Strap" tells the "Coach" about painting the bus white and then painting it back for games and adding the "Buddy" apology instead. Makes more sense.

The girl was the Principal’s daughter. Apparently all of her other speaking scenes were cut, so this scene wouldn’t have made much sense without her backstory but it would have been better than no explanation of Buddy’s return. Maybe they could have just reshot a scene with only Coach and Buddy?

I think the Buddy scene was crucial. But without the daughter of Cletus. I'm glad they cut her. She was irritating in all of the scenes she was in. I think they could have made a short scene with Buddy coming to talk to Norm that would have fit in the film time limit.

The deleted scenes give somewhat of an impression Loretta is hot for Norm. Obviously the Buddy scenes are crucial to the storyline making sense.

Also, while Myra makes a snotty remark implying Norm is 50, Cletus' reference to Norm being at Buffalo State Teachers College in 1931 kind of implies he's about 42-43.

@@ghostsofVTurbexSkysthelimitvid The deleted scenes make it pretty clear Loretta is somewhat of the alpha female among the Hickory girls, although that's pretty much lost with the deleted scenes. In a couple of different shots she's shown sitting along with Myra as somewhat of a co-equal or BFF. Obviously the role of females in mid 50s small town society was not really the topic matter of "Hoosiers," but I can think of a fun scene that could have changed this. Say during the state tournament run, Myra observes the town is going bonkers about Jimmy and the rest of the players, and the girls are pretty much ignored. So Myra and Norm go out to the schoolyard to ask Loretta what she thinks about it. "It doesn't bother me," she says as she bounces the basketball. "Maybe by the time I have kids things will change." As she's talking, she shoots in a dozen shots in a row, just like Jimmy.

glad i found this scene...but while the powers that be demanded the movie be under 2 hours..I still blame those responsible for cutting as there were other scenes that could have been cut that would not have invoked such controversy

The only edit that was a problem was the one about Buddy. It was kind of weird to just see him back on the team. But that scene with the young girl flirting with Gene Hackman was even cringier than the romance with Barbra Hershey. All they should have done is shown a few quick shots of Buddy being miserable being a spectator. The scene where the dad dragged his kid back represented how intolerable it was to quit playing basketball so we didn't need to see another kid ask to come back.

Brings back a lot of memories, basketball was life here in Indiana. I remember coming home one summer, after I had graduated from college and moved away, to find my dad had removed the 24x24' court in our back yard, right when they went to a class system.

I enjoyed the scene with the opposing coach, but it wasn't necessary. All other scenes needed to he cut. None of these scenes redeem Myra Fleener who is the biggest shrew in modern movies. A terribly written character. The movie didn't need a love interest, and nobody would be interested in Myra Fleener.
