It's possible it changed direction after Ikumi Nakamura left. She was the original director of the project but she left the studio a few months after the announcement. To my understanding Shinji Mikami took over the project and while it's likely a decent amount of Nakamura's ideas are still in place it's possible Mikami wanted to still take things in a different direction.

Don't know why some people are complaining about the direction of the game. Both Ikumi Nakamura and Shinji Mikami stated this was an Action Adventure game with some horror elements. To me that sounds like Bioshock 1. Its a shame that Ikumi left because she was sick. But health is more important.

Bloodborne also has a kill all enemies (beasts) approach too. However, Bloodborne managed to still be more horror-filled than expected, even though it's just an action-rpg game. Ghostwire looked like it will be dark in tone, but now it looks a bit campy. I'm sure it will be fun based on Mikami's record, but I think it's justified when I feel a bit surprised about the gameplay style and tone in comparison to what they showed before. Looks fun. Just hoped they showed something like this from the beginning.

Love the way people are disappointed because its not what they expected from a 3 minute cinematic with no gameplay a year ago. This is the problem with gaming today people see a cinematic just outlying some themes then make an entire game up in their head that isn't even being made.. I think this looks dope, and after viewing the trailer from last year again you can clearly see its more action orientated when the character is shown using magic and has a bow and arrow..

They.... already have backstories. They're folklore creatures- they literally have entire origin stories that have been thrown into pop culture for eons. Just no one reads about them. This is a modern take on traditional japanese folktales- and some urban legends. hence the takaonna and kasa-obake. And why you're using divination-onmyouji magic instead of shooting them with guns. In a way- it is a bit like Cabin in the woods- except unleashed was not all the worlds horror creatures, just folktale creatures. Not to say they aren't horror creatures- these stories were made to scare children from doing certain things or teach them about morality.- just too much media paints them in a cutesy light. Their origins are always sick and twisted.

And I doubt Nakamura really would have had another vision, she was feed up with horror games and monster, Evil Within was harsh with health, she had constant nightmares and insomnia because of it.
